The Oscar season is slowly beginning, countries have started choosing films that will be their candidates in the best foreign movie category, and Hungary has chosen SEMMELWEIS period set drama which will be the second time that Lajos Koltai represents his country. 

 

WHAT IS THE STORY?

This historical biopic centres around a famous Hungarian doctor Ignac Semmelweis (Miklós H. Vecsei) who introduced antiseptic procedures at a Vienna maternity clinic. In 1847 a mysterious epidemic is raging in a maternity clinic in Vienna, while the doctor Ignác Semmelweis tries to defeat puerperal fever by going against all traditional theories. After playing in Hungarian cinemas earlier this year it became their most watched movie in last five years. The film is available for streaming on Netflix in some countries, methinks.

  THE STORY IS SET IN 1821

Diego hasn't called on his double Zorro in 20 years. But in the name of the common good, he has no choice but to pull out his mask and sword. Diego soon finds it difficult to reconcile his dual identity as Zorro and mayor, and this puts a strain on his marriage to Gabriella, who is unaware of his secret. Can Diego save his marriage and his sanity in the midst of chaos? Salvatore Ficarra plays his mute sidekick Bernardo, with Audrey Dana as his wife Gabriella. This connection makes Frasier concerned that Phoebe could be his daughter. Amy Sedaris will play Doc Stathos, a therapist who admires Frasier. Patricia Heaton will appear as Holly, a bartender and Frasier’s new love interest. Yvette Nicole Brown will join the cast as Dr. Monica Finch, the sister of Olivia, Frasier’s colleague.

The latest book to small screen adaptation announced is for Alice Feeney's best seller SOMETIMES I LIE which will be produced into series by Tommy Harper and Oscar nominated Matt Charman. The psychological thriller revolves around the character of Amber Reynolds as she wakes up in hospital to discover, she can’t move, speak or open her eyes, but can hear, unbeknownst to those around her. She doesn’t remember what happened, but she has a suspicion her husband, who no longer loves her, was somehow involved. Alternating between her paralyzed present, the week before her accident, and a series of childhood diaries from twenty years ago, the thriller slowly pieces together the truth. 

LOVE OF MY AFTERLIFE

Sky History has revealed a first look at their first ever scripted drama, three part series GUNPOWDER SIEGE in which Chuku Modu leads the story set in 1605, as a leader of a group of plotters that attempted to blow up King James I at the opening of Parliament. As Deadline reports, it delves into the aftermath of the plot, spotlighting its three leaders: Robert Catesby, his cunning cousin Thomas Wintour (Luke Hobson), and their ruthless enforcer, Thomas Percy (Luke Roberts). We follow them as they try to raise a revolutionary army – and while the captured Guy Fawkes is being tortured in the Tower of London. Charlotte Pyke plays Anne Vaux, a supporter of the Plot and who acts as narrator. The series will air November 4th.

Set in the Joseon era during a tumultuous time in the aftermath of war, the films takes a journey through the lives of two childhood friends-turned-adversaries: Cheon Yeong (Gang Dong-won), a slave with remarkable martial prowess; and Jong Ryeo (Park Jeong-ming), Cheon Yeng's master and scion of Joseon's most influential military family. Cha Seung-won stars as King Seonjo in  the South Korean epic movie.

As Russian Kino-teatr reports, a production has started this summer on new historical TV series PRINCE ANDREY (Князь Андрей ) which will delve deeper into their past going all the way back to the 12th century. Alexander Golubev takes the lead role with Alexander Baluyev, Sergey Bezrukov, Alexander Ustyugov, Aglaya Shilovskaya, Boris Kamorzin, Polina Chernyshova, Artem Tkachenko and Stanislav Lyubshinand also starring in the epic series that will air on Russian national broadcaster. Although not one of the most famous of their historical figures, Andrey was loved by the people and was proclaimed a saint later on.

  THE SERIES IS SET IN 12TH CENTURY RUSSIA

It was a period of the brutal internal struggle between the princes from the family of Rurikovich. The young prince Andrey Bogolyubsky, the son of Yuri Dolgoruky and the grandson of Vladimir Monomakh, returns home from Byzantium, where he spent several years. His dream is to reign in his native Suzdal land, turning it into a new prosperous center of all Russia. However, the powerful father of Andrey, experienced Yuri Dolgoruky sees in his son only a submissive performer of his will, and the heir to the Grand Duke's throne decides to revolt - declares himself an independent ruler. What would the last quarter of the year be without Channel 5's tentpole series ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL, right? It is returning with the fifth season, with the sixth already ordered, September 19th with six new episodes and the seventh festive one airing later on at Christmas. The series will also return with the new season to PBS Masterpiece for the viewers in United States January 12th and will air on Sunday nights.

 

IT IS NOW SPRING OF 1941

and we return to Darrowby to find young baby Jimmy keeping everyone in Skeldale House on their toes. Helen is getting the hang of motherhood with James away at RAF Abingdon, Mrs. Hall and Siegfried are enjoying having a little one around and Carmody is now a full-fledged member of the Skeldale family. With World War II now fully underway, Siegfried is taking up the slack at the surgery, Mrs. Hall and Helen are considering their contribution within the community, and Carmody is eager to step up. Siegfried is keen to have everyone back, but Tristan’s surprise return won’t be quite as straightforward as he hoped.

Sir Trevor is  the team’s larger-than-life founder and owner. Victoria is a shrewd and ruthless investment banker who finds her way back into the front office.  depicts the extraordinary real-life feat of Hungarian army commander Janos Hunyadi (Gellért L. Kádár), who turned back the tide of the Ottoman Empire’s seemingly unstoppable advance into Europe when back in 1456 he won a bloody Battle of Belgrade against a vast Ottoman force twice the size of his troops who were sometimes armed with just slings and patriotic fervor. To this very day church bells ring every day at noon in honour of this victory. Franciska Törőcsik plays his first love Mara, Serbian princess, who had to marry Ottoman Sultan Murad (Murathan Muslu) in order to protect her people.
