Netflix has released a rather lovely trailer for their new original Australian series MY BRILLIANT CAREER which will be available for streaming from August 13th! Based on the Miles Franklin novel, the six part saga sees Philippa Northeast playing Sybylla, a fiercely modern young woman with one burning ambition: to be a writer, even as her family pushes her toward marriage. Sybylla breaks every convention of 1900 Australia as she chases a story that could write her way to independence, until she falls in love. Will she marry, or risk it all for a creative life? Christopher Chung stars as Harry, Anna Chancellor as Mrs Bossier, Genevieve O’Reilly as Helen, Kate Mulvany as Augusta, Jake Dunn as Frank, Alexander England as Julius, Sherry-Lee Watson as Nell and Miah Madden as Betty.

Netflix has announced cast for their first New Zealand eight part original series QUEENSTOWN. This is the official synopsis released by the streamer: Beneath the glamour of Queenstown’s luxury ski scene, a privileged family and the people who work for them collide over power, loyalty and desire. Rufus Sewell and Frances O’Connor have been set as leads and will be joined by Alycia Debnam-Carey and Te Kohe Tuhaka!

The series will arrive October 8th!

As the siege escalates, loyalties are tested and selfless sacrifices are made, leading to a desperate fight for survival where not everyone will emerge alive. Can Harry use his skills and training to be the country’s saviour? Now Timothy Spall, Harry Lawtey, Gemma Whelan have been added to the cast as well!

Netflix has revealed some brand new images showing the lead cast of their new Spanish language period set series THE FINAL PROBLEM based on the bestselling novel of the same name by acclaimed Spanish author Arturo Pérez-Reverte. Thisnew five episode mini series blends thriller and mystery in an immersive period setting starring Jose Coronado, María Valverde, Martiño Rivas, Maribel Verdú, Gonzalo de Castro, Cristina Kovani, José Condessa and Pepón Nieto. It has been revealed today that the series will be available for streaming globally from September 25th so you can have a glamorous new mystery series to look forward to this Autumn and below the post you can also check out the announcement teaser trailer! You can also check out the character posters which I posted in our previous article on this drama last year.  This is not the only new period set series coming to the streamer from Espagna, as sometime later this year we can also expect their Lobo medieval series.

Cha Seung Woo, Nam Joo Hyuk, and Roh Yoon Seo lead the cast in this Korean fantasy drama.

Inspired by the true story of the NGO Jugend Rettet, this drama follows a group of young people who no longer want to stand by and watch as countless refugees die in the Mediterranean on their way to Europe. With no experience in sea rescue, they launch a crowdfunding campaign, buy an old fishing vessel, and go on to save the lives of more than 23,000 people. Some TV news for you today, starting with Alicia Vikander who has joined Aaron Taylor Johnson in ENIGMA VARIATIONS series at Netflix playing a woman he marries as he alternates between male and female partners. The series tells the story of Paul (Taylor-Johnson), a man remade by the lovers who ignite and undo him across ten transformative years. It’s an intimate yet sweeping portrait of masculinity, sexuality, and modern love, and in a world of endless choices, it asks the question: will we know when we’ve found the one?

 

DIANE LANE IN A HUNDRED PERCENT

Netflix has also cast Diane Lane in their half hour comedy series A HUNDRED PERCENT which already has Nick Kroll, Sam Richardson, Jason Mantzoukas, and Vanessa Bayer in the cast. She will portray Suzanne, a bestselling author, media mogul, and legend in the self-help world in the comedy about a group of friends who are stars in the world of wellness and self-optimization. Their books, podcasts, and morning routines might help us live our lives more perfectly, but away from the screens and mics, they are most definitely far from perfect.

Channel 5 has released first image from their new mystery series LAST RESORT which follows retired librarian Gail (Caroline Quentin) as she takes her sister, Joy (Niamh Cusack), to an idyllic holiday town in what is supposed to be a fun-filled bucket list trip. Sadly, Joy is suffering from the early stages of dementia, so the sisters are keen to get the most out of every moment they have left together, inviting longtime friends Dee (Tessa Peake-Jones) and Charlie (Jason Watkins) along for the ride. However, these best-laid plans quickly go awry when tragedy strikes the local community, with police being quick to declare an unfortunate accident – but the group are convinced it is murder and set out to prove it. As old crimes surface and dark patterns emerge, the group of friends finds that this seemingly idyllic resort town – with its beach walks, pub lunches, and good-natured bickering – hides something far more sinister. Together they must piece together one devastating mystery and track down a killer who has been hunting in this close-knit coastal community and beyond! John Hannah plays a cop. 

 

THE OTHER BENNET SISTER XMAS SPECIAL

BBC is, meanwhile, wishing you a Mary Christmas! Their popular costume drama THE OTHER BENNET SISTER is returning for a three-part special this Christmas. Ella Bruccoleri returns as Mary, with a host of other familiar faces from the series. The series offers a fresh take on one of Jane Austen’s most unassuming characters: Mary Bennet. Forced to step out of her sisters' shadows, Mary embarks on a journey of self-discovery – finding love, and most importantly herself, along the way. BritBox is airing it in USA. 

 

 

LEANNE SEASON TWO ARRIVES AUGUST 

Netflix has announced the return of their multicamera sitcom LEANNE for August 27th with Leanne Morgan returning as Leanne whose world is turned upside down when her husband of 33 years unexpectedly leaves her for another woman. Supported by her family, including her ride-or-die sister Carol (Kristen Johnston), Leanne learns to embrace the chaos and finds strength, laughter and hope in the most unexpected places. Lainey Wilson, Jaime Pressley and Billy Gardel are guest stars in the new season.

I announced this one originally back in May last year, but now we have a trailer for romantic movie VOICEMAILS FOR ISABELLE as it is about to stream over at Netflix this Friday June 19th with our dear Nick Robinson in the lead role alongside Zoey Dutch. The film was both written and directed by Leah McKendrick. 

 

 THE STORY OF THE FILM 

follows Jill (Dutch) as she copes with her sister’s death by leaving her voicemails about her chaotic life in San Francisco. When the number is reassigned without her knowledge, an elusive Austin, Texas, real estate agent (Robinson) begins receiving the hilariously confessional messages. Gil Bellows, Nick Offerman, Lukas Gage also star in this romantic comedy.

It does not yet have a title but John Lee Hancock's Netflix movie on Monsanto has a strong cast. Joining Jonathan Bailey and Laura Dern are Greg Kinnear and David Duchovny. The courtroom drama is based on the true story of Brent Wisner (Jonathan Bailey), a young, untried attorney who takes on a seemingly insurmountable case against Monsanto on behalf of Dewayne “Lee” Johnson. Wisner’s client alleged that he developed non-Hodgkin lymphoma as a result of his exposure to Monsanto’s best-known product, the weed and grass pesticide killer Roundup, through his job as a high school groundskeeper.

I must confess I rarely watch anything on Netflix, but I do like it when they give us something apocalyptic. Today we have a very atmospheric and scary first trailer for thriller movie THE LAST HOUSE from Louis Leterrier which will be available for streaming August 7th! Greta Lee and Wagner Moura star in the original sci-fi thriller about a family who are mysteriously sealed into their home with no way out. If that doesn’t sound nightmarish enough, their resources are running thin, and they must work together to survive not only a lack of essentials but also the mysterious, looming threat that is keeping them trapped inside. SPOTLIGHT ON NEW FRENCH PERIOD SET SERIES SUMMER OF 36 ARRIVING TO NETFLIX THIS JULY

Among a number of new period set shows that premiered earlier this spring at this year's Seriesmania was also French and Belgian six episode drama SUMMER OF '36 a historical thriller set in Nice, summer of 1936. The series already aired on their broadcasters and is currently available for streaming on Netflix in those two countries, Switzerland and South Africa, but will be also available, as far as I understood, to the rest of the world from July 1st at the streamer.

WHAT IS THE STORY OF THE SERIES?

 The elite are stunned as the first working-class vacationers arrive on the French Riviera, thanks to newly granted paid leave. A couple of brand new book adaptations for you to launch the new week starting with the studio war over at Cannes over the rights on THE MIDNIGHT LIBRARY fantasy movie based on a book by Matt Haig which has been translated into 56 languages so far and sold in 15 million copies. Florence Pugh will star in Garth Davis directed movie as Nora Seed, who finds herself in a library between life and death with the chance to experience all the potential lives she could have lived. 

 

THE MAP OF LONGING TV SERIES 

New series will stream from July 17th

Netflix has, meanwhile, issued the first trailer for their TV series adaptation of THE MAP OF LONGING based on the novel by Alice Kellen, about Greta, a young woman who has always believed that her reason for existing was to help her sister Lucy, who suffers from leukemia, through her stem cells. However, everything falls apart when Lucy dies, leaving her with a deep sense of emptiness and unsure of what to do with her life. Before passing away, Lucy leaves behind a game that pushes Greta to confront her pain and rethink who she really is. Along the way, Greta meets Will, an enigmatic boy with a troubled past. Can you love someone if you haven’t first learned to love yourself? The series arrives July 17th.

  

THE DOLL (LALKA) POLISH CLASSIC FROM BOLESLAW PRUS IS GETTING BOTH A PERIOD SET MOVIE AND TV SERIES ADAPTATION THIS YEAR! SEE TRAILERS

THE POLISH MOVIE VERSION

It sometimes happens that the same book gets different adaptations but rarely within the same year which is happening this year with Boleslaw Prus' famous Polish classic THE DOLL (Lalka) which is getting both a Polish movie adaptation and a Netflix TV series this year. The movie comes from director Maciej Kawalski and should hit cinemas September 30th with Marcin Dorocinski and Kamila Urzedowska in the lead roles. In the film, wealthy merchant Stanislaw Wokulski (Marcin Dorocinski) falls tragically in love with beautiful yet vain Izabela Lecka (Kamila Urzedowska). His unfulfilled love leads to many foolish decisions sealing his fate.

 

 

The TV series version will stream on Netflix

At the same time, also arriving sometime later this year is Netflix Polish original series directed by Paweł Maślona and set against the backdrop of 19th century Warsaw. It follows the complex tension between the wealthy merchant Stanisław Wokulski (Tomasz Schuchardt) and the aristocratic Izabela Łącka (Sandra Drzymalska). He is a successful merchant who finds himself torn between his progressive ideals and his infatuation with Izabela Łęcka, a haughty and vacuous aristocrat. Covering the themes of unrequited love, class conflict and Poland’s stagnation under the Third Partition the six episode saga is set to air towards the end of the year.

East of Eden will arrive sometime this Autumn

After casting Florence Pugh and Christopher Abbott in the lead role, Netflix added Ciaran Hinds, Mike Faist and Hoon Lee to the cast of EAST OF EDEN mini series adaptation of Steinbeck's classic novel producedby Zoe Kazan, whose grandad Elia directed the original film, and now we have the first teaser for the series that will arrive sometime this Autumn. Set in California’s Salinas Valley over a period that stretches from the Civil War to the end of World War I, the epic novel tells the interconnected stories of the Hamilton family, an Irish immigrant family with nine children, and the Trask family, lead by the wealthy Adam Trask (to be played by Abbott in the seven part series). Netflix has released a brand new quite glitzy and colourful teaser for their new TV series adaptation of LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE which arrives July 9th! Alice Halsey stars as Laura Ingalls, the bright, honest young heroine of our story. A transformed adaptation of Wilder’s semi-autobiographical books, the new Little House on the Prairie is part family drama, part epic survival tale, and part origin story of the American West. The eight episode series will offer a kaleidoscopic view of the struggles and triumphs of those who shaped the frontier. Luke Bracey plays her father. Crosby Fitzgerald, Skywalker Hughes, Warren Christie, Jocko Sims, Meegwun Fairbrother, Alyssa Wapanatâhk, and Wren Zahewenim Gotts also star.
