This adaptation has been in plan over in Hollywood for two decades now, but now it will be Ridley Scott who will direct the movie version of famous Robert Louis Stevenson classic TREASURE ISLAND with Hugh Jackman attached to portray pirate Long John Silver. According to Deadline, the package will be offered to the studios this week. The story follows a young boy who uncovers the map to a legendary buried treasure, and he embarks on a perilous sea voyage to claim a hidden fortune, only to find himself locked in a deadly battle of wits with the charismatic and treacherous pirate Long John Silver.

Jacob Elordi leads the story of Hig, a young pilot who, together with a military survivalist, Bangley, played by Josh Brolin, has carved out an efficient but isolated homestead in a brutal post apocalyptic world until a mysterious radio transmission spurs Hig to venture into the unknown in search of the hope and humanity he still believes exists. Based on Peter Heller’s captivating bestseller it also stars Margaret Qualley and Allison Janney and will be out August 28th. I have to admit that the original animated movie from 1952 was my favourite film during my childhood.

Currently in production is a four part $25 million expensive mini TV series A LAND REMEMBERED based on a historical novel by Patrick D. Smith and starring Philip Ettinger, Lily McInerny and William Catlett. As Deadline reports, it chronicles three generations of the MacIvey family in frontier Florida from the mid-19th to the 20th century, as they turn swamp cows, citrus, and unwanted land into a multi-generational commercial empire so successfully, it results in the eventual decline of the natural place they so loved. It will be offered to the buyers at the upcoming MipCom.

After a mysterious cosmic event rips Oak Street from suburbia and transports their neighborhood to someplace unknown, a family soon discovers that their very survival depends on them sticking together as they navigate their now unrecognizable surroundings. Can Diego save his marriage and his sanity in the midst of chaos? Salvatore Ficarra plays his mute sidekick Bernardo, with Audrey Dana as his wife Gabriella. Channel 4 has already aired this one over in Britain and I actually finished watching it earlier this week and can tell you that it is probably the best period set series of the year so far, but I wanted to inform you today that it will start streaming for the audiences in USA and Canada on BritBox as of June 24th and you do not want to miss it. With Brenda Blethyn as the lead it is the reboot of A WOMAN OF SUBSTANCE  based on Barbara Taylor Bradford's novel with Jessica Reynolds playing the younger version. The latest book to get a big screen adaptation is Italo Calvino's 1957 novel THE BARON IN THE TREES which tells the adventures of a boy who climbs up a tree to spend the rest of his life inhabiting an arboreal kingdom. Italian director Alice Rohrwacher is set to helm according to Variety. The novel brings the story of a young baron, Cosimo Piovasco di Rondò, firstborn of a noble family sadly behind the times. The main story begins with a dispute on June 15, 1767 in the villa of Ombrosa, between an adolescent Cosimo and his father, after which Cosimo, who had quarreled with his father because he had refused to eat a snail soup, climbs the trees of the home garden and promises never to come down again in his entire life.

In their latest exclusive reel of what to expect in the second part of the year, HBO Max has unveiled, among others, first look at the fourth season of their popular costume drama THE GILDED AGE which arrives sometime this year and the trailer below shows Bertha dancing with her husband smiling which might mean the troubles in their marital paradise are over?  After Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon) changed society at a cost, her family must reckon with the consequences while Agnes van Rhijn (Christine Baranski) seizes in the new season an opportunity to regain her position. Meanwhile, Marian (Louisa Jacobson) forges a new path for herself, and Peggy (Denée Benton) works to be accepted by her future in-laws. There will also be a whole line of new characters in the fourth season.

 

THE WAR SERIES WITH DOMINIC WEST

HBO has also shared glimpses at their new six part thriller TV series WAR with Dominic West as tech titan Morgan Henderson and Sienna Miller as his estranged wife in a series that follows two of London’s most prestigious rival firms, Cathcarts and Taylor & Byrne, as they go head-to-head in the divorce case of the century. Each side is certain they’ll win. But as the case spirals and loyalties fracture, reputations are on the line, and everyone’s  playing to win. This is just the beginning as the series has been ordered for two seasons - season one’s explosive case is the first in an anthology of headline-making legal battles. Sky will air the series in UK. A couple of brand new book adaptations for you to launch the new week starting with the studio war over at Cannes over the rights on THE MIDNIGHT LIBRARY fantasy movie based on a book by Matt Haig which has been translated into 56 languages so far and sold in 15 million copies. Florence Pugh will star in Garth Davis directed movie as Nora Seed, who finds herself in a library between life and death with the chance to experience all the potential lives she could have lived. 

 

THE MAP OF LONGING TV SERIES 

New series will stream from July 17th

Netflix has, meanwhile, issued the first trailer for their TV series adaptation of THE MAP OF LONGING based on the novel by Alice Kellen, about Greta, a young woman who has always believed that her reason for existing was to help her sister Lucy, who suffers from leukemia, through her stem cells. However, everything falls apart when Lucy dies, leaving her with a deep sense of emptiness and unsure of what to do with her life. Before passing away, Lucy leaves behind a game that pushes Greta to confront her pain and rethink who she really is. Along the way, Greta meets Will, an enigmatic boy with a troubled past. Can you love someone if you haven’t first learned to love yourself? The series arrives July 17th.

Eleanor Tomlinson stars as Amanda Blakefield, whose life is a happy one with her husband, Jimmy(Matthew Lewis), and their son Luke. Amanda has her world shattered after she is left an enormous inheritance by a man she has neither met nor heard of before. Her life starts to disintegrate as she becomes embroiled in the world of The Worrall Family. The patriarch Martin Worrall (Denis Lawson), is head of a family which is bound in past secrets. As Amanda’s story leads her further and further into the Northumbrian countryside, she begins to unravel the past. And all of their lives are turned upside down.
