FIRST IMAGES FROM BBC TV SERIES

BBC has sent us first images from their new mini TV series THE HAIRDRESSER MYSTERIES with Sally Phillips leading the six part drama out this July. Infused with an upbeat 1970s spirit, the nostalgic crime drama sees her play a hairdresser, Lily Petal who opts out of the competitive city scene to buy a small village hairdressing salon at the top of a cobbled street. Charlotte Jordan plays Clary Coombs, Lily’s bright and analytical assistant and the Watson to her Shear-lock Holmes. Ben Castle-Gibb plays PC Adam Watson, an eager young copper in the local village who falls head-over-heels for salon assistant Clary. Sunetra Sarker plays Wincey Evans, the village’s local chit-chatter with a reputation as a known gossip. Clive Rowe plays Lonnie, the flamboyant manager of the local charity shop and Guy Henry plays Race Runard, the local village’s eccentric antiques dealer with a penchant for priceless teacup and saucer sets. An array of guest stars will also appear through the series including Wendi Peters who plays Gloria Crudd, another newcomer to the village hoping to make a fresh start with her ice cream parlour but soon finds her old life catching up with her. Everyone tells their hairdresser everything and soon she becomes the hub of her new village’s secrets and revelations. Using her own brand of uncannily developed hairdressing intuitive, empathy and understanding, Lily begins to solve the mysteries of the village.

I announced this one originally back in May last year, but now we have a trailer for romantic movie VOICEMAILS FOR ISABELLE as it is about to stream over at Netflix this Friday June 19th with our dear Nick Robinson in the lead role alongside Zoey Dutch. The film was both written and directed by Leah McKendrick. 

 

 THE STORY OF THE FILM 

follows Jill (Dutch) as she copes with her sister’s death by leaving her voicemails about her chaotic life in San Francisco. When the number is reassigned without her knowledge, an elusive Austin, Texas, real estate agent (Robinson) begins receiving the hilariously confessional messages. Gil Bellows, Nick Offerman, Lukas Gage also star in this romantic comedy.

According to Variety, the story of Maria José of Savoy, who served as queen of Italy after World War II for only 27 days before Italians voted to abolish the monarchy, will be shown in new historical film

Maria of Savoy was queen of Italy for 27 days

 MAESTA (“Majesty”), directed by Ginevra Elkann. The daughter of Albert I, the King of Belgium, Maria José married Italy’s Prince Umberto II, whose father, King Vittorio Emanuele III, cooperated with fascist dictator Benito Mussolini. She became known as “the May Queen” because she and her husband reigned for just 27 days in 1946, from May 9, when Victor Emanuel III abdicated in favor of his son, hoping to save the throne for the House of Savoy during the turmoil after Mussolini’s fall, until June 2, when Italians voted to abolish the monarchy and the Savoys went into exile. Known to be a rebellious royal and a surreptitious anti-fascist, Maria José then moved to Portugal and soon left her husband.

It does not yet have a title but John Lee Hancock's Netflix movie on Monsanto has a strong cast. Joining Jonathan Bailey and Laura Dern are Greg Kinnear and David Duchovny. The courtroom drama is based on the true story of Brent Wisner (Jonathan Bailey), a young, untried attorney who takes on a seemingly insurmountable case against Monsanto on behalf of Dewayne “Lee” Johnson. Wisner’s client alleged that he developed non-Hodgkin lymphoma as a result of his exposure to Monsanto’s best-known product, the weed and grass pesticide killer Roundup, through his job as a high school groundskeeper.

According to Deadline, Kari Skogland is developing a movie adaptation of Ava Reid's historical novel LADY MACBETH a gothic retelling of Shakespeare’s play Macbeth centered on the character of Lady Macbeth. The 2024 novel reimagines one of literature’s most enduring figures through a dark, intimate lens, following a young noblewoman thrust into a politically arranged marriage in a brutal medieval world. As she navigates survival, power, and identity within a system designed to constrain her, her transformation unfolds into a portrait of ambition, resilience, and consequence.

Shelley Conn stars as Tom’s wife Hannah, and Matthew McNulty as Beth’s husband Neil, with Johnny Sanpher and Leila Khan as the teenage lovers. The six part series has started filming back in April.

Warner Bros has added Anya Taylor Joy to Andy Serkis directed LORD OF THE RINGS: THE HUNT FOR GOLLUM in which he will also repeat the role of Gollum. Kate Winslet joined previously as Marigol, Smeagol's grandmother, with Lee Pace returning as Elven king Thranduil and Sir Ian McKellen as Gandalf. With Elijah Wood back as Frodo, Jamie Dornan joins as Strider aka Aragorn while Leo Woodall will be a character named Halvard. Anya Taylor Joy will play Seren, a Sindar Elf of the Woodland Realm, a trusted and lethal agent of King Thranduil. Set between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, it will follow Aragorn’s perilous quest to capture Gollum before the creature can reveal the Ring’s location to Sauron. The film is out December 17th 2027.

I must confess I rarely watch anything on Netflix, but I do like it when they give us something apocalyptic. Today we have a very atmospheric and scary first trailer for thriller movie THE LAST HOUSE from Louis Leterrier which will be available for streaming August 7th! Greta Lee and Wagner Moura star in the original sci-fi thriller about a family who are mysteriously sealed into their home with no way out. If that doesn’t sound nightmarish enough, their resources are running thin, and they must work together to survive not only a lack of essentials but also the mysterious, looming threat that is keeping them trapped inside. ITV has surprised us today with the first trailer for their upcoming new six part thriller TV series THE PARTY which boasts quite a stellar leading duo with Luke Evans and Tom Cullen! Evans plays Martin Gilmour, a journalist shaped by his lifelong friendship with the wealthy and charismatic politician Ben Fitzmaurice (Cullen). Raised alone by his working-class mum, Sylvia (Joanna Scanlan), Martin wins a scholarship to an elite boarding school, where he first meets Ben. They forge an unbreakable bond, as Ben and the Fitzmaurices give Martin the sense of belonging he has always craved. In turn, Martin remains unflinchingly loyal to Ben through even the greatest crises. Three decades on, Martin is invited to Ben’s lavish birthday party atthe Fitzmaurices' country pile. The news of the Conservative leader’s resignation threatens to derail Ben’s party, as he considers announcing his  intention to stand. After The Break-In adaptation which we announced a few days ago, Peacock is teaming up with Carnival Films again in the TV series adaptation of SUCH A NICE GIRL book by Andrea Mara who also wrote

The book will be turned into a TV series

 their previous series All Her Fault. In the new series, the morning after a glamorous luxury wedding, best friends Siobhan and Grace go to wake their 24-year-old daughters. Opening the door to their shared room, they find a smashed lamp, an abandoned phone and blood on the carpet. Over the next few days, the truth unravels and tests Siobhan and Grace’s friendship to its limits. As secrets and lies begin to come to light, they realize the girls were not best friends. In fact, they weren’t really friends at all. And now, it looks like one of them is dead and one is a killer. But whose daughter is guilty of murder? In other TV news, Netflix has ordered a second season of The House of Guinness series, Prime Video of their The Girlfriend series (which will become The Boyfriend in the second run), and Apple their Widow's Bay series, while Channel 4 will be shooting A Woman of Substance season 2 this November!

The diver gets swallowed by an 80-foot, 60-ton sperm whale and has only one hour to escape before his oxygen runs out. After giving up on life, the young man is surprised to find a reason to live in the most dangerous and unlikely of places. This adaptation has been in plan over in Hollywood for two decades now, but now it will be Ridley Scott who will direct the movie version of famous Robert Louis Stevenson classic TREASURE ISLAND with Hugh Jackman attached to portray pirate Long John Silver. According to Deadline, the package will be offered to the studios this week. The story follows a young boy who uncovers the map to a legendary buried treasure, and he embarks on a perilous sea voyage to claim a hidden fortune, only to find himself locked in a deadly battle of wits with the charismatic and treacherous pirate Long John Silver.

 detective in new drama series HERCULE – produced by Mammoth Screen and Agatha Christie Limited for the BBC and BritBox North America. The six part series is an intimate study of Hercule the man and an epic portrait of Britain between the wars. The series takes a magnifying glass to three of Christie’s most celebrated stories, while also charting Hercule’s burgeoning friendship with Captain Arthur Hastings, his early encounters with Scotland Yard’s James Japp, and introducing him to one particular nemesis… Filming begins this summer.

Inspired by Sergei Aksakov's classic novel, the plot follows a merchant's daughter as she finds herself trapped in the castle of an enchanted monster prince, whose salvation depends entirely on her. I have to admit that the original animated movie from 1952 was my favourite film during my childhood.

Among a number of new period set shows that premiered earlier this spring at this year's Seriesmania was also French and Belgian six episode drama SUMMER OF '36 a historical thriller set in Nice, summer of 1936. The series already aired on their broadcasters and is currently available for streaming on Netflix in those two countries, Switzerland and South Africa, but will be also available, as far as I understood, to the rest of the world from July 1st at the streamer.

THE BREAK-IN written by Katherine Faulkner is a domestic mystery: In the aftermath of a devastating home invasion, Alice Rathbone refuses to accept that the tragic event was simply random. Desperate for answers, Alice starts pulling at threads and soon finds a trail of dark secrets that spiral closer to home than she could ever have imagined. Megan Gallagher will be the executive producer of this brand new television series over at the well known production house Carnival Films.
