"MENTAL" TRAILER WITH TONI COLLETTE! "BAD TEACHER" & "ABOUT A BOY" TO BE MADE INTO SHOWS! JESSICA PARKER KENNEDY JOINS TOM HOPPER & TOBY STEPHENS IN "BLACK SAILS" EPIC SERIES BY MICHAEL BAY

As you already know, HOLLYWOOD SPY has a huge thing for epic and historical shows and one of the shows we're looking for the most in the
future is pirate show BLACK SAILS which will replace SPARTACUS at Starz in 2013. The show just got its female lead - Jessica Parker Kennedy from SECRET CIRCLE who will play a beautiful and capable French prostitute named Max. British star Toby Stephens takes the lead role of Captain Flint the buccaneer, in the eight part series produced by famous Michael Bay which focuses on the tale of Captain Flint twenty years before the events of Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island". I've also informed you that superdashing Tom Hopper, Sir Percival from MERLIN, will play Billy Bones, first mate of the Walrus ship who becomes caught up in the conflict between Captain Flint and his nemesis Singleton. The show is being directed by GAME OF THRONES' Neil Marshall.

HOLLYWOOD SPY HEADLINES
Only a week ago I've informed you about A KNIGHT'S TALE being made into a TV series and now some other films are moving to television format too.  According to the Hollywood Reporter hilarious comedy BAD TEACHER which starred Cameron Diaz and Justin Timberlake
few years ago, will be made into a TV show at CBS. As you remember, Diaz played the worst teacher in the world, a foul-mouthed lady who attempts to seduce her colleague thinking he was rich. Meanwhile, NBC is planning to adapt ABOUT A BOY film with Hugh Grant into TV show. Based on Nick Hornby's novel it tells the story of Will Freeman, a self-involved bachelor whose life is disrupted by his new neighbours - a young boy named Marcus and his mother Fiona. In short TV news, REVOLUTION, NEW NORMAL and Matthew Perry's GO ON have all received full season orders at NBC, ONCE UPON A TIME's new character Captain Cook played by Colin O'Donoghue has been proclaimed into a regular, while Whoopie Goldberg will guest star in ABC's new horror show 666 PARK AVENUE.

"MENTAL" TRAILER
Here is something utterly delightful. Coming from Australia (they always have adorable films from MURIEL'S WEDDING and STRICTLY BALLROOM to GRIFF THE INVISIBLE), MENTAL is a comedy drama which just opened up in cinemas Down Under. Reuniting Director P.J.
Hogan and Toni Collette for the first time since "Muriel's Wedding", MENTAL stars an incredible ensemble cast including Anthony LaPaglia, Rebecca Gibney, Liev Schreiber, Kerry Fox, Caroline Goodall, Sam Clark and Deborah Mailman. Their mother, Shirley, unable to cope with her demanding daughters and unsupported by her philandering politician husband, Barry, suffers a nervous breakdown. After Barry commits his wife to a mental hospital (telling his constituents that "she's on holiday") he finds himself alone with five teenage girls he barely knows. Desperate, he impulsively picks up a hitchhiker named Shaz (always wonderful Toni Collette) and installs her in his home as nanny to his daughters.

I've also wanted to thank Ken Follett, the famous author of worldwide bestselling epic sagas THE PILLARS OF THE EARTH and WORLD WITHOUT END and one of world's legendary writers in historical genre, for tweeting about your HOLLYWOOD SPY this weekend. What a true honour!

  2. Just to add to your early post about Merlin, I am listening to the scores for Season 3 and 4, comes out soon from the label MovieScore Media... love them both... third time I am listening to them this weekend. I swear, not to swear.

    1. ah, yes, the show had lovely music, and even some episodes with amazing songs, I remember an episode from an earlier season in which they had an amazing opera singer who enchanted the whole court with her aria, a lovely tune. You should also listen to THE TUDORS, THE VIRGIN QUEEN and CAMELOT soundtracks, they're also amazing.

  3. I'm kind of excited for Black Sails. And Mental looks like it will live up to it's name. Should be a good one.

I can't believe Ken Follett tweeted your post! I should probably be nicer about my comments on here. You never know who's lurking. :P

And sorry about your troll trouble on the other post. If you want I will patrol your perimeter with the penguins. :))

    1. I have faith in PJ Hogan and Collette, they're such a great tandem!
BLACK SAILS should be amazing, can't wait to see pics, and I'm sad it is such a long wait before we see it.

You do know celebrities lurk around here from time to time (for real, I'm not joking). Follett, if I remember correctly, liked my work on PILLARS a few years ago, and I remember seeing links to my post on some of his sites, and I'm extremely honoured that he tweeted about my Sunday post again :) He is a legend after all in the literary world.

Ah, don't ask, you say one negative, but honest, thing and trolls think you're the meanest person on Earth :( Please, do protect me, sister :)

    2. Yes, your epic spotlight posts are very celebrity Tweet-worthy. :D

And you know that pure sunlight destroys trolls. But I will carry Glamdring with me, too, in case there are goblins and orcs circling. :))

    3. indeed they art, thou speaketh wisely, milady :)
Me has no idea what or who Glamdring is, but I like the sound of it :)

      Delete
    4. What!!! Glamdring, otherwise known as Foe-hammer, is Gandalf's sword, elven made. It strikes terror into the heart of all goblins and orcs. Orchrist, or Goblin-cleaver, is the other one carried by Thorin (?).

Wow, you really need to see the Hobbit film. :PP

    5. oh, Bilbo has some kind of sword on one of the HOBBIT posters too and it also has a name, but I forgot which one. I only remember that lovely horse of Gandalf's :) and mithril shirt :) And the Rohirims, but that goes without saying in my case :)

  4. That's it - I'm sending Guido over here to take care of your troll problems, we cannot have trolls causing you any problems Dezzy. Besides, I didn't get to comment about not seeing your Spartacus wrap up or, more likely the case, having read it and putting it out of my mind because I don't want to even think of my main man meeting his demise!! The horror of it all.

You mention so many good things in here Dezz it's hard to pick just one and comment. I mean, Griff The Invisible - Love it, Go On, Love it, Bad Teacher, great movie but I can't seeing lasting as a television show for very long, then again...what do I know?

Mental looks like a great movie too.

Oh, and how could I forget, congrats on yet another celebrity tweet, Dezzy! Fantastic!!

    1. well, Elsie, what can I tell you, you did know how the legend about Spartacus ends and they will have to end it the same in the show, but the producers, as you can read in the spotlight (you have it in my new sidebar feature on featured epic shows), said they will make it a glorious end which doesn't look like a failure of their goal. Like Lucretia died gloriously in the previous season :)

Thanks, I was overwhelmed with Follett's tweet :)

    2. The troll patrol will be on high alert tonight darling. Guido already has their scent and it won't be long before he bags 'em and tags 'em.

I need a few more heads on a pike in front of my Troll of Fame.

    3. these are not the same trolls we've had before, darling, but I really would feel safer with Guido on the head of my penguins and raccoons.

I'm unexcited about Bad Teacher. I thought the movie was terrible with horrible morals and not funny at all.

  8. I say a hearty yes to a Pirate epic. That should be splendid.

Mental looks fantastic, it had me laughing by the second scene. Love Aussie films as they have such a grand sense of the absurd. The father in this film is going to find out exactly what drove his wife 'round the bend.

Congratulations on the tweet from Ken Follett!

Now about those hideous trolls from yesterday. I had such a hard time not laying into them. But we all know that would have been food for the pathetic little things. Such needy people should really seek psychiatric help as clearly they suffer from mental illness. Or it could just be that they have really tiny dicks. Yeah, they probably have small dicks and haven't gotten laid since their mother changed their nappies.

    1. We really need some TV fun in the middle of cold January winter, so BLACK SAILS should really warm us up in 2014 :)

I've always loved Australian films, they have such lovely ironic sense of humour and their films often have lovely depth.

      Thanks, Ken is the greatest!

You won't believe it, Anne, but after I closed the comments they started sending me offensive emails and I even got one death threat. Imagine that? Those were all ladies, Anne, not men. I'm guessing teenagers. I got all of their's computer IDs, so they should watch what they're sending me....

Oh, that Colin O'Donoghue is a cutie! I think he distracted you too much that you wrote Captain Hook instead of Captain Cook, he..he..

    1. no, no, the first one was Luke Evans, darling, Hiddlestud was third or fourth, we also had Dylan McDermott before him, Emmy winner Trevor Morris, and some other stars :) Hiddlestud deffinitely brought the biggest number of visits here, since I had dozens and dozens of his fans retweeting his tweet about us and then thousands of their visits :)

Isn't he Hook? Because he has a hook on his hand?

  16. After 'Pillars' the 'World Without End' looks fantastic. Really enjoyed Follet's books (his latest series set in the 20thC will be great for film too) It all appeals to me because of the care he always takes with the historicality of what he writes - and those interpreting his books on film have also gone to that trouble - did I see Ridley Scott in the titles for the latest? If so, that explains why.

Sorry to hear about your troll problem. The Hollywood Spy is a great site and your comments and critiques always balanced and straight forward. Evidently some fans of the Merlin fantasy series can't handle that. Well they can blog off - because there are many, many more who appreciate what Dezzie does!

Huge congrats on your 2 millionth(!!!!!) visitor (which should show those troll schwanzekopfen just what they're up against!) Go Dez!

The Aussie movie Mental is a real hoot. Toni Colette does batshit crazy like no other. She's such an unassuming talent too - no egomania to her at all, unlike some others I'm sure you could name! Her character 'Shazza' (Aussie for 'Sharon') is what is known as a 'bogan' - a species of urban dwelling Aussie - although she far transcends that descriptor in her performance.

Sorry for the long-winded post but its been a while and I've only just come back from traipsing around rainforests with a camera - blissfully out of touch with anything online - for the last two weeks. So this is a kind of catch-up with all thats been happening on your very busy blog!

    Cheers,
    Doc

    1. Hey, Doc, it is always a true delight and pleasure having you visit us :) Always love your refined manners and sense of honour!

Yes, readers respect Follett exactly for his attention to historical details and his devotion to the genre. He oversees all of the series made upon his books personally. Ridley is producing the latest one :)

Thanks, Doc, that support means a lot. And I won't allow censorship of our opinions because we fight for talent which is not in abundance in today's showbiz :(

Toni Collette really is the best. I've asked a number of Australian stars and actors in my interviews what is it in the air Down Under which creates so many truly talented thespians from Cate Blanchett to Geoffrey Rush, Peter Jackson and Hugh Jackman, not to mention all of the SPARTACUS stars.

That sounds exciting, hope you will write about your trip at your blog! Would love to hear more :)
