THE GAMBLER'S WIFE MOVIE
ABOUT DOSTOYEVSKY'S WIFE
After success with 'Tchaikovsky's wife' and 'Petrov's Flu', Russian producer Ilya Stewart has opened a Berlin based production house Hype Studios which will,
according to Variety, produce English language films and series. Among them is THE GAMBLER'S WIFE from award winning director Malgorzata Szumowska, an adaptation of Andrew D. Kaufman’s book about Russian novelist Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s wife Anna Snitkina, a stenographer who helped him write his famous novels Gambler and Idiot in just a few weeks by typing his words. In his new partnership with Kirill Serebrennikov they are also preparing LIMONOV: THE BALLAD OF EDDIE co-produced by Pathé, an adaptation of Emmanuel Carrère’s novel with Ben Whishaw as the radical Russian poet and dissident Eduard Limonov.
The film will be based on Andrew Kaufman's book |
There has been so many adaptations of this story. I saw Sir Michael Gambon and Jodhi Mai in the Gambler, I saw Demons of St. Petersburg, and there is a miniseries about it in Tubi. It's a fascinating tale, but there are so many others out there that have never merited a film
ReplyDeleteThank you for mentioning previous adaptations, I did not know there were so many, but it is defo an interesting story to adapt, especially as they met only because he needed a typist in order to finish the two books in a month and cover the debts and save his and his brothers publishing house in Russia. With the leftover money he returned to the gambling house in Berlin LOL
DeleteYes, he was a bit depressing. I don't like his books either.
DeleteYou do not? I kinda do, I even did my high school degree work on Brothers Karamazov. But I do prefer Tolstoy.
DeleteMen tend to like Dostievsky better. Tolstoy is the master, the best writer (barring Cervantes) of the whole wide world
DeleteOy, cannot stand Cervantes, I think I died from boredom about hundred times while trying to finish Don Quixote. The same goes for Moby Dick and Quiet Flows the Don from Sholokhov.
DeleteI haven't watched many Russian films and TV series..yesterday we watched To the Lake, which was surprisingly interesting. The Gambler's Wife could be entertaining too.
ReplyDeleteThis will not be Russian, but an international company shooting English lg films and series with international cast.
DeleteWhile it doesn't sound like something I would like, hopefully others will.
ReplyDeleteFingers crossed.
DeleteI'm with Mary on this one. Probably not one I'll add to my watch list, though I do love to see women recognized for their roles in helping the greats succeed.
ReplyDeleteShe only typed the books and was paid for it lOL
DeleteIf he couldn't do it himself, then she certainly deserves the recognition.
DeleteWell, how could he do it when he had to come up with the stories in just a few weeks, he literally came up with his two big novels IDIOT and GAMBLER in that one month, he dictated it and she typed as a hired secretary. That is how he managed to write two novels in just weeks and pay off debts.
DeleteExactly. He couldn't. She stepped in and helped, paid for of course. It's like comparing a big corporation and the CEO's get all the recognition, but it's the minimum wage employees that are keeping the place afloat day in and day out and don't get recognized. You can't be successful without help, and those who help definitely deserve to be recognized for the roles they play in making things great.
DeleteI do not agree in this case, because she was just technical staff, she did not help him come up with the stories. It is like saying a worker who turn on the machine in a chocolate factory deserves recognition for chocolate having amazing flavour which some other person created.
