NICHOLAS SPARKS' 'THE CHOICE'

Here's someone we haven't seen in a while (at least I haven't): SMALLVILLE's star Tom Welling has just joined the big screen adaptation of Nicholas Sparks' THE CHOICE! I've already reported that Benjamin Walker will play Travis Parker and Teresa Palmer will play Gabby Holland  -  neighbours in a small coastal town, who end up pursuing a relationship neither expected. Welling will be a doctor at his father’s practice who is Gabby’s boyfriend. The triangle plays out over the course of a decade in North Carolina. Maggie Grace and Alexandra Dadario will also join the cast of the romantic drama in supporting roles.

NEW SITCOMS ON TV

ABC BUYS 'SPLITTING THE DIFFERENCE', NBC 'TAKE IT FROM US' COMEDIES
In today TV news, new sitcoms are being commissioned as we speak: ABC has bought comedy series SPLITTING THE DIFFERENCE produced by Eva Longoria! Based on Tré Miller Rodriguez’s memoirs the story will centre on a buttoned down 17-year-old who reunites with her recently widowed 36-year-old biological mom and they become the heart of a patchwork family bound by more than blood. NBC has, meanwhile, bought  TAKE IT FROM US sitcom from FRIENDS scribe Greg Malins about a couple in their 50s who tell their son and his new fiancée all the mistakes they made in life in hopes the new couple can avoid making the same mistakes.

SCARLETT JOHANSSON IN 'THE CUSTOM OF THE COUNTRY' MINI SERIES
Meanwhile, Scarlett Johansson is also moving to the small screen since she's just taken the lead role in historical mini series THE CUSTOM OF THE COUNTRY which Sony Pictures TV will adapt from Edith Wharton's novel.  The 1913 novel tells the story of Undine Spragg, an ambitious but socially naive Midwestern girl who attempts to climb New York's social ladder with mixed results.

You trailer treat for today (and I hope ITV doesn't take it down from YouTube before you see it, if they do, stay tuned and I'll post the trailer here when it appears again or see it here) is the first truly gorgeous one for ITV's new historical series POLDARK and the ladies will love it since lead star Aidan Turner is naked in it a lot!  The eight part series is set in 18th century Cornwall following the story of the rebellious Ross POLDARK as he returns from the American War of Independence to Cornwall, only to find that his old world is ruined: his father is dead, the family mine long since closed, his house wrecked and his sweetheart pledged to marry his cousin. But Ross finds that hope and love can be found when you are least expecting it in the wild but beautiful Cornish landscape. Scheduled to air next year, the series will also star Eleanor Tomlinson from WHITE QUEEN and JACK THE GIANT SLAYER.

The biggest news today is that Sony has bought a script for HOOD fast paced historical action franchise in a heated war with other studios! Imagined as a franchise of movies which would each deal with the green archer Robin Hood and his men from Sherwood, these films would each focus on a different character from Little John and Friar Tuck to Will Scarlett with them being presented as a sort of mediaeval superhero team which shares the same universe like in AVENGERS and X MEN! The idea for the script comes from Cory Goodman ('The Last Witch Hunter') and Jeremy Lott ('Lore')! We saw Robin Hood last time in Hollywood four years ago with Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett!

In TV news today, ABC has bough comedy JUVIE from Sam Layborne (MICHAEL J FOX SHOW) which will follow a privileged and naive golden boy, who takes a job at a juvenile hall and discovers he has more to learn than to teach.
SYFY 'FIVE GHOSTS' TV SERIES
SyFy will, meanwhile, turn FIVE GHOSTS comic book into TV series following the travels of treasure hunter Fabian Gray and his rare ability to harness the ghosts of five literary characters, referred to as “The Wizard”, “The Archer”, “The Detective”, “The Samurai” and “The Vampire”.

Meanwhile, in the news from the romantic genre, it seems that gorgeous SCANDAL star Kerry Washington will move into the movie world after taking the lead role in IS HE THE ONE romantic comedy. Envisioned in the form of flashbacks the movie will begin with a bride (Kerry Washington) getting ready to walk down the wedding aisle. The movie than goes on to describe the three major relationships the bride has been in throughout her life. Here's a piece of info I didn't have time to publish over the weekend: according to 'Deadline' Sarah Jessica Parker will take the lead role in romantic comedy ALL ROADS LEAD TO ROME! Swedish directress :) Ella Lemhagen will helm the movie which is to be shot entirely in Italy. Sarah Jessica Parker will play Maggie, an uptight American woman on a road trip throughout Italy with her Italian former lover Luca who is helping her find Maggie’s rebellious teenage daughter. You've probably heard by now that SEX AND THE CITY might also get its third part in the future and Sarah might again play Carrie Bradshaw, one of the most self observed of the TV characters ever.

'ST PATRICK' EPIC MINI SERIES
In TV News, Len Wiseman (UNDERWORLD, SLEEPY HOLLOW) will produce historical mini series on ST. PATRICK, the protector of Ireland! To air at Fox, the epic series will explore Patrick‘s dramatic transformation from a rebellious teenager into a legendary peacemaker chronicling his story as a slave who becomes a priest, a priest who becomes a warrior, and ultimately a warrior who becomes a saint. Born in Great Britain in the 5th century, he was abducted by Irish pirates at age 16 and was taken to Ireland where he was enslaved for six years before escaping to return to his family. Acting on a vision, he goes back to Ireland as a Christian missionary and would go on to become one of the symbols of Ireland, with the date of his death, March 17, observed around the world as St. Patrick’s Day.

Beside YOUNGER TV Land has also officially ordered ten episodes of IMPASTOR sitcom which will see Michael Rosenbaum playing Buddy, a man in debt who cons a small town into believing he is their new gay pastor. Sara Rue stars as Buddy's assistant, while Mircea Monroe plays Alexa Cummings, the head trustee of Loomis Lutheran Church who has a crush on Buddy.  Aimee Garcia appears as LeeAnne, a bartender from San Francisco and Buddy's girlfriend.

The latest historical spectacle DRACULA UNTOLD has hit the European cinemas this weekend scoring brilliant reviews and before Vlad the Impaler invades US theatres next weekend, here are all the things you need to know about the epic movie starring Luke Evans as the famous Dracula.

THE UNTOLD STORY OF DRACULA

At the turn of the century, the young lord Vlad Tepes (Luke Evans) and his young family live a peaceful life ruling over their small kingdom. However, when evil sultan Mehmed (Dominic Cooper) with his growing army demands from Vlad the first born male of every family to join his army; Vlad's wife makes a terrible mistake which will change history forever. Vlad's wife, Mirena (Sarah Gadon) travels to visit bloodthirsty witches (Samantha Barks) in the nearby mountains. While there she sells her soul to stop the invading army - the price however is that Vlad will become a blood-thirsty monster that will hunt the ages.

BEGINNING OF MONSTER SERIES

With the budget of stunning $100 million, DRACULA UNTOLD has been officially confirmed as the first film in Universal's vast monster series which will include films on famous monsters with the second project being about MUMMY!  One of the last scenes in DRACULA UNTOLD serves as the intro to this new monster universe.

THE ROOT OF THE HATRED

The conflict between Vlad and Mehmed begins very early: as a boy, the Turks have taken him to Ottoman Empire where he was raised alongside Mehmed II in the court of Sultan Mehmed I. Mehmed had developed jealousy over Vlad who was a better warrior.

When they grow up Vlad., as a vassal ruler of Transylvania,  will be forced to pay tributes to new Sultan Mehmed II but the problem will arise when Mehmed arrives demanding that Vlad gives up 1,000 boys for his army, including his own son, Ingeras (Art Parkinson). In real history, Ottomans were known for their ruthless habit of taking little boys from their vassal countries and raising them over in Turkey as Janissaries, sultan's  bloodthirsty butchers who spread terror around the enslaved nations. Since Vlad grew up in that way, giving up his son who would then experience the same horrors was unacceptable.
TIMELESS LOVE STORY
DRACULA UNTOLD isn't a film about carnage even though the theme is very dark. The idea was to make a film to be watched by whole families since the focus of the story are family values and love. It is a character based timeless love story.

VAMPIRE SPECIAL POWERS

After drinking blood and becoming a vampire in order to save his people and family, Vlad gains some special powers such as flying, healing and immortality. 

THE LAVISH COSTUMES

When it comes to costumes, the colours are opulent at Mehmed's lavish court, and more modest in poorer Transylvania. Sarah Gadon's Mirena wears a lot of light colours as the symbol of innocence and love. In one of the scenes she wears a rich crown made of pearls and lace. Luke Evans wears some of the most spectacular armours ever seen on the big screen!

A hiddlestudly piece of info a day keeps the doctor away, that is your advice from Dr. Dezz for today: according to 'Hollywood Reporter' Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie will star in BBC's new mini series THE NIGHT MANAGER based on John Le Carre's novel! The mini series, which will be sold to a US network too, follows Jonathan Pine, a British soldier turned luxurious hotel night auditor. He crosses paths with a French Arab woman named Sophie with ties to Richard Onslow Roper, an English black marketer who specializes in weapons. The woman provides Pine with incriminating documents, which he forwards to a friend in British intelligence. After Sophie winds up dead, Pine works with intelligence operatives and goes undercover as part of a sting against Roper to avenge Sophie's death.

NBC'S 'THE SLAP' MINI SERIES

In other TV news, I've mentioned recently that NBC is preparing 8 episode series THE SLAP with Zachary Quinto, Brian Cox and Peter Sarsgaard in the lead roles, and now they are joined by two ladies - Thandie Newton and Melissa George! The adaptation of Australian mini series brings a complex family drama that explodes from one small incident where a man slaps another couple’s misbehaving child. This seemingly minor domestic dispute pulls the family apart, begins to expose long-held secrets and ignites a lawsuit! Thandie Newton will play Aisha, a doctor, wife of Hector (Peter Sarsgaard) and mother of their two children. She readies herself for the onslaught as she makes preparations for her husband’s birthday party, irritated but somewhat amused when her in-laws show up. Melissa George is Rosie, a hippie wife and  meddlesome mother of Hugo, the 5-year-old boy who is slapped (by Quinto) after waving a bat in another boy’s face. Convinced that Hugo has been unalterably traumatized, she sets in motion a confrontation that embroils and affects everyone who witnessed it.

Disney's action adventure movie THE FINEST HOURS has just added Eric Bana to the cast which already includes Chris Pine, Graham McTavish, Ben Foster, Cassey Affleck and Holliday Grainger! The movie will follow a true story of a massive Coast Guard rescue mission after one of the worst storms ever to hit the East Coast split two oil tankers in half back in the 1952. Eric Bana will portray a Coast Guard warrant officer who sends Chris Pine on this dangerous mission, despite the objections of his wife. Four Coast Guard members set off in a lifeboat to rescue over 30 crew members who were stranded on the vessel as it began to sink, facing 70-foot waves and below freezing temperatures along the way.

After a long break, Welsh queen Catherine Zeta Jones will take on a lead role again! She will topline THE GODMOTHER, a biopic of infamous drug kingpin Giselda Blanco! She was the only woman to ever rise through the ranks of Colombian's notorious Medellin cartel, a feared figure during the drug wars that exploded in Miami during the 1970s and 1980s. She was said to have ordered hundreds of assassinations to attain her grip on the drug trade, which earned her nicknames such as La Madrina, Black Widow, and the Cocaine GODMOTHER. She was known for establishing a drug network between New York, Los Angeles and Colombia! In TV news, ABC has ordered a pilot for FUNHOUSE comedy series about a man who kidnaps his estranged father from a nursing home along with his 24-hour male nurse and brings them to his home. This upsets the already chaotic existence between him, his wife, three kids and extended family but ultimately works as a catalyst of self-discovery and what they all mean to each other.

Meanwhile, TNT has ordered a pilot for LUMEN fantasy series which will follow a famous author of fantasy books who suddenly disappears, and a family of four finds themselves transported to the mystical alternate world that inspired her work. Once there, they are plunged into the middle of a war raging between rival magical forces, of light and darkness. First poster and trailer (currently only in German) have been released for new romantic comedy drama POSTHUMOUS which arrives to Zurich Film Festival this weekend starring Jack Huston whose career is picking up some serious momentum since he will be the new BEN HUR, Wickham in PRIDE AND PREJUDICES AND ZOMBIES and King Charles II in THE GREAT FIRE historical series. Brit Marling and Lambert Wilson also star in the story about an artist who, after false reports of his demise put him and his work on the map, decides to continue the charade by posing as his own brother.
