Since Hollywood is currently sleeping, we are, per your favourite custom of ours, again going East to visit sweet old mother Russia where a very charming new period set series has just started: as of January 16th BEZSONOV (Безсоновъ) is available on Russian NTV with all its twenty episodes!  Gorgeous Russian star Denis Nurulin stars in the lead role of a young prince who investigates crimes in St. Petersburg in the late nineteenth century. WHAT IS THE STORY? 

 Clever and resourceful Prince Nikolai Bezsonov (Denis Nurulin) leads an idle life, which he has long been bored with. One day, he is accidentally arrested as a suspect in a crime. The young prince decides to prove his innocence, takes on his own investigation and suddenly figures out the killer. That unexpected event allows Bezsonov to find his true calling - work in the detective police. Colleagues accept him coldly, and only an experienced official, Pyotr Romanovich Shchukin (Alexei Grishin), sees the future star of the detective force in the young man. Together they are trying to uncover a chain of mysterious and dangerous crimes committed either in the city slums or in the boudoir of a socialite.

Goldy's professional reputation is put under fire when people realize that she was the last one to use the grill. Funny Woman starts February 9th

With Peacock ordering new dramedy series Cleo, a feminist take on Egyptian queen Cleopatra (which we cannot wait not to see), there is another period set comedy coming much sooner: although it seems I mentioned it first a very long time ago and that it has taken years for FUNNY WOMAN to find its way onto the small screens, the six part comedy series will finally arrive to Sky Max February 9th and also to their streamer NOW! This comedy about a fictional British comedy actor, based on Nick Hornby's popular best selling book, has Gemma Arterton as the titular funstress with Rupert Everett, David Threlfall, and hunky Tom Bateman also in the cast.

Today I have for you first image from new six part German and Swiss costume drama DAVOS set in the popular Swiss Alps winter resort.  The World War I story set in then neutral Switzerland will follow a female main protagonist Johanna, played by empress Sisi Dominique Devenport, a nurse who gets embroiled in a plot involving international spies. She intends to find her illegitimate daughter and agrees to a dangerous deal with the German secret service. Jeanette Hain, David Kross, Anna Schinz, Hanspeter Müller-Drossaart and Sunnyi Melles will also star in the series which is currently still shooting. It will air on Swiss channel SRF and German national broadcaster ARD during the 2023-2024 winter television season and will be presented at Berlin TV market this spring.

A couple of adaptations today, beginning with Justin Baldoni who will direct the movie adaptation of Coleen Hoover's IT ENDS WITH US with Blake Lively as s girl named Lily who has just moved and is ready to start her life after college. Lily then meets a guy named Ryle and she falls for him. As she is developing feelings for Ryle, Atlas, her first love, reappears and challenges the relationship between Lily and Ryle. Baldoni will also star in his film.

 

THE PERFECT NANNY AT HBO WITH NICOLE KIDMAN

Meanwhile, Nicole Kidman is returning to HBO where she will star, together with Maya Erskine, in the six episode TV series adaptation of THE PERFECT NANNY from Leila Slimani. In this high profile limited series, a seemingly perfect nanny goes to work for a couple with two young children, but her helpful personality eventually deteriorates into something sinister.

Eric Roberts, Michael Ironside, Neil Stuke, David Schofield, Jeremy Neumark-Jones, and Genevieve Florence also star. The movie follows a profoundly spiritual man (Neumark-Jones) of Hungarian Castle Esztergom who must confront and halt the Great Mongolian Army led by Batu Khan, grandson of Ghengis Khan (Mongolian actor Bold Choimbol) from invading Europe in 1242. The story focuses on their unlikely meeting

It will not stream until March next year, but Prime Video has released first teaser trailer for DAISY JONES AND THE SIX mini TV series  an adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid popular novel of the same name, a history of a fictional band from the ’70s with a Fleetwood Mac–like sound! Beside detailing the rise it will also detail the precipitous fall of a renowned rock band.

Netflix has just released a trailer for their new period set mini series THE LAW ACCORDING TO LIDIA POET which should arrive February 15th directed by Matteo Rovere and starring Matilde de Angelis.

 

  THE STORY

Turin, late 1800s. A ruling by the Court of Appeal of Turin declares Lidia Poët's enrollment in the register of lawyers illegitimate, thus preventing her from practicing the profession because she is a woman. Penniless but full of pride, Lidia finds a job at her brother Enrico's law firm, while she prepares the appeal to overturn the Court's conclusions. Through a gaze that goes beyond her time, Lidia assists the suspects by seeking the truth behind appearances and prejudices. Jacopo (Eduardo Scarpetta), a mysterious journalist and Lidia's brother-in-law, passes her information and guides her into the hidden worlds of a magniloquent Turin. The series reinterprets the true story of Lidia Poët, the first lawyer in Italy, in a light procedural key. As you know, while America has Netflix, Amazon and many other streaming services, Scandinavia has its Viaplay, France, Germany and Spain have their own streamers, Australia has Stan and Foxtel, Russia has a number of their own too and so does Southern America, and I think I mentioned a couple of times that there is also a panArabic streamer Shahid which covers most of the Muslim countries. Shahid has now launched their massively ambitious epic TV series SLAVE MARKET which has an international cast, has been shot in more than 100 different locations depicting Middle East, Africa, Asia and Europe, with 70 regular cast members and more than 17,000 extras and almost 5,000 costumes done for the show!

NEW SERIES SLAVE MARKET

penned by Kuwaiti writer, Heba Mashari Hamada, and directed by the award-winning Tunisian director, Lassaad Oueslati, narrates five stories taking place simultaneously in different parts of the world. Set in the 1900s, whilst these stories may differ in detail, they all intersect at the fate of each story’s protagonist when they all fall into slavery. The first season of the drama follows the journey of five main characters – Rahma (Arabian Peninsula), Colonel Morton (and his English family living in Jeddah), Lavani (Mumbai), Quako and Natanda (Eastern Africa), and Khorshid’s family (European Caucasus) – up to the point they all end up at the slave market.

Fox has released first poster, cast photos and a teaser for their new half hour comedy series ANIMAL CONTROL which will move into their Thursday

Animal Control starts February 16th

nights from February 16th with our dearest Joel McHale in the lead role  of Frank,  a former cop whose effort to expose corruption led to his firing from the force, Frank now leads the charge as an Animal Control officer with a cynical and curmudgeonly outlook. While he may be a bit rough towards humans, Frank does know animals.

 

Joining him for the fun is new partner Fred “Shred” Taylor (Michael Rowland), Emily Price (Vella Lovell), Amit Patel (Ravi Patel), Victoria Sands (Grace Palmer), Dr. Summers (Alvina August), Dolores Stubb (Kelli Ogmundson), and Templeton Dudge (Gerry Dee). The Animal Control workers will face a variety of situations from life-threatening encounters with dangerous apex predators, showdowns with swashbuckling and overly equipped squads from other law enforcement  agencies, and interventions with pet owners who are too self-medicated or lacking in IQ to be the owner of any creature. All while stumbling over the team’s own array of unmanageable personal situations while out in the field. So be prepared to see freaked-out tripping bunnies, an angry boxing kangaroo, and a cow in a fraternity house.

Netflix has released first photos from their October 27th movie PAIN HUSTLERS starring Emily Blunt, Chris Evans and Andy Garcia. Emily plays Liza Drake, a high-school dropout, who, dreaming of a better life for her and her young daughter, lands a job with a failing pharmaceutical start-up in a yellowing strip mall in Central Florida. Liza's charm, guts and drive catapult the company and her into the high life, where she soon finds herself at the center of a criminal conspiracy with deadly consequences. The film is directed by David Yates more known for massive epic movies than small dramas.
