JOINS NEW 'DUNE' FILM?

White Queen will rule Arrakis.. or so it seems. According to 'Variety' Rebecca Ferguson will join Timothee Chalamet in big screen adaptation of Frank Herbert's cult sf classic DUNE to be helmed by Denis Villeneuve for Legendary.

DUNE, set in the distant future, follows Paul Atreides, whose family assumes control of the desert planet Arrakis. As the only producer of a highly valuable resource, jurisdiction over Arrakis is contested among competing noble families. After Paul and his family are betrayed, the story explores themes of politics, religion, and man’s relationship with nature, as Paul leads a rebellion to restore his family’s reign. Chalamet would play Paul, but  Ferguson won't be Princess Irulan from the house of Corrino nor Fremen concubine Chani, but Paul's mother Lady Jessica!

Barnum's wife, and Zac Efron, who plays his young business partner, also sing in it. Rebecca Ferguson, who is herself Swedish and has graduated from music school, plays Swedish Opera singer Jenny Lind! This is Hugh's second musical after Les Miserables, but he was the original choice for legedary Moulin Rouge together with Catherine Zeta Jones before the roles went to Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman.

I've reported earlier on this, but now British ITV is finally moving on with it: they have found the lead for their ultra lavish television series adaptation of Thackeray's Victorian saga VANITY FAIR! The seven episode epic series will also stream on Amazon. Mammoth Screen who is producing Poldark and Victoria will be doing this one as well!

Olivia Cooke (who recently went Victorian in Limehouse Golem) will take the lead role of Becky Sharp in the series that follows her stoic and unscrupulous attempts to make her way in English society in the backdrop of the Napoleonic Wars and the rule of King George IV! The shooting starts this September in London and Budapest, so expect other casting updates this summer!

BBC has released the first teaser for their new March 31st three part comedy series DECLINE AND FALL the first television adaptation of Evelyn Waugh's 1928 satire starring Jack Whitehall as Paul Pennyfeather, an inoffensive divinity student at Oxford University in the 1920s, who is wrongly dismissed for indecent exposure having been made the victim of a prank. Finding work at Llanabba, an obscure public school in Wales, he meets Mrs Margot Beste Chetwynde (Eva Longoria) the mother of one of the pupils. A new one has also been released for science fiction action thriller LIFE which hits European, Russian, UK and USA cinemas next March starring Ryan Reynolds, Rebecca Ferguson and Jake Gyllenhaal as astronauts aboard the space station who study a sample collected from Mars that could provide evidence for extraterrestrial life on the Red Planet. The crew determines that the sample contains a large, single celled organism - the first example of life beyond Earth. But things aren't always what they seem. As the crew begins to conduct research, and their methods end up having unintended consequences, the life form proves more intelligent than anyone ever expected.

We're again all sf today, starting with the news coming from 'Deadline' that one of our most anticipated of the upcoming TV series Amazon's and Richard Madden's STRANGE NEW THINGS has just cast Haley Joel Osment in one of the roles!

STRANGE NEW THINGS is based on Michel Faber's book set in the near future, when Earth is becoming unsustainable. Richard Madden stars as Peter, a priest who is sent into space to help found a new colony, but what he ends up discovering not only puts his faith to the test but life as we know it. Osment will play Sy, a man who used to grow large quantities of marijuana before being recruited to work on the new colony as chief botanist.

Now here's a new role for Girl on the Train and White Queen star Rebecca Ferguson: as 'Deadline' reports she will lead Justin Chadwick directed THE LADY AND THE PANDA movie!

The film is based on Ruth Harkness’ original detailed correspondence. When, as the 1930s New York socialite, she lost her wealthy husband unexpectedly, she took over his expedition to China. Ignoring the dictates of society, she joined forces with an unproven but dashing Chinese guide with whom she travelled down the Yangtze and deep into the uncharted Himalayas where they rescued an orphaned baby panda. When Ruth took it back to the U.S., she created a nationwide sensation but before long realized the animals are best preserved in their natural habitat.

NEW 'SAMSON AND DELILAH'
He almost won an Oscar for his movie on Genghis Khan, but now, Russian film maker Sergei Bodrov is returning to the epic genre with SAMSON AND DELILAH! He will direct the epic adventure movie adaptation of Ze’ev Jabotinsky's bestseller! The cast is currently being assembled for a movie which should start shooting next summer in Africa. Bodrov, who has other epic movie experiences since he also helmed Ben Barnes and Kit Harington in Seventh Son epic fantasy a few years ago, will shoot a movie on Samson, a fierce warrior, a wise judge, and a brave defender of his people. As 'Deadline' reports, Jabotinsky’s book brings a unique interpretation of the Biblical story which empowers Samson with supernatural strength, yet at the same time never losing sight of the character’s human qualities.

Speaking of epic projects of Biblical proportions and budget, Warner Bros. has just brought another foreign movie Oscar nominee Joachim Ronning (Kon Tiki), who recently finished Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales for Disney,  to direct Tom Cruise in the epic adventure movie on legendary METHUSELAH, a man who lived for almost 1,000 years without ageing, developing a set of unparalleled survival skills during his life. Tom Cruise is obviously in the mood for epic adventures, which is unusual for him since he usually does contemporary action flicks, as he has just finished shooting THE MUMMY reboot in which he leads the cast.
