ITV is ready to launch their new thriller series GONE Sunday March 8th. Set against the backdrop of a prestigious private school, a foreboding forest and the quiet sprawl of Bristol, a chilling mystery focusing on local Headmaster Michael Polly (David Morrissey), who becomes the prime suspect in his wife Sarah’s disappearance. An upstanding member of the community, Michael Polly is inscrutable and likes order and precision in his working life. Until, that is, he encounters super bright, gutsy Detective Annie Cassidy (Eve Myles), and a compulsive game of cat and mouse begins as she chips away at his veneer in search of the truth. With tension in the air, yet Polly not displaying any emotion, Annie’s suspicions are heightened the more she investigates. Something in her gut tells her all is not what it seems. Could he be capable of murder? And if so – why? Beneath the surface of the mystery, lies a deeper exploration of trauma, trust and the legacy of elite institutions. Before the Revolution, there was a Revelation. Benjamin Franklin is portrayed by John Paul Sneed while young Jonathan Blair plays reverend George Whitefield in the film directed by Joshua Enck. Bille August will direct the new series

After scoring a global success with Sam Claflin's Count of Monte Cristo series which hits PBS in USA next month, Oscar winning director Bille August will, according to Variety, produce an epic series on JULIUS CAESAR. This epic new series will explore the story of a great leader intoxicated by power, uncovering the deep psychological complexities ultimately leading from the most epic feats to his downfall. Greg Latter is penning the scripts for Mediawan's Palomar who did Monte Cristo as well. Shooting of the new historical series is predicted to start sometime at the beginning of next year.

Warren Brown leads as DCI Joe Mottram, a star detective with the Metropolitan police who, after a personal tragedy, retreats to Capri in Italy with his daughter to stay with his Italian in-laws for the summer. Phyllis Logan is Elena Da Vinale, the witty matriarch of the family, front-of-house manager of the family restaurant, and mother to DCI Joe’s late wife. Jafar from Disney's Aladdin, super handsome Marwan Kenzari has just been cast as the lead star of new Netflix five episode psychological thriller TV series THE SILENCE which will be a small screen adaptation of the novel The Quiet Girl by S.F. Kosa. The story kicks off when successful writer Sara Post vanishes without a trace. Her husband, Tarik, becomes entangled in a dangerous search that forces him to confront her concealed past. His journey brings him into contact with a closed community where silence is valued above the truth. Dutch model Rianne van Rompaey will play his wife in the series which is being produced as the streamer's Dutch original.

KING LUDWIG II HISTORICAL TV SERIES

Beta Film together with German ARD and Swiss SRF is preparing historical series LUDWIG on Bavarian king Ludwig II who took the throne in 1864 and was considered to be a bit mad spending lavishly on outlandish and extraordinary projects like building castles on the top of the mountains. The series follows psychologist Gustav Zimmermann (Felix Mayr) who is tasked with reviewing a psychiatric report on the King (Luis Pintsch), a document that will ultimately determine whether he is declared incompetent to rule. This work brings him closer to revealing the secrets of the royal ruler: his struggles with power, his longing for freedom and his profound forbidden love. Aaron Friesz, Carlotta Bähre, Jonathan Kriener also star.

 

  ROBIN HOOD RENEWED FOR SEASON TWO

Meanwhile, MGM Plus has renewed their epic series ROBIN HOOD for the second season with Jack Patten, Sean Bean and Connie Nielsen. Season two expands the world beyond Sherwood and Nottingham into the treacherous courts of England, France, and Rome, transforming the outlaw rebellion into a high stakes battle for the soul of a kingdom. There are a couple of new period set international TV series currently being prepared for our viewing pleasure, so I thought I could do a spotlight on them today for you, starting from Holland where they have GRAND HOTEL BY THE SEA ready for the international market later this year. This eight part series, done for Dutch NPO broadcaster, is a romantic period drama centered on the future of the prestigious 'Grand Hotel aan Zee' in Noordwijk, spanning the years 1912 - 1919. Hotel owner Sandra is determined totransform the Grand Hotel aan Zee within two years into the premier hotel for Europe’s elite along the Dutch coast. In her pursuit, she is confronted with the challenges of being an ambitious woman at the dawn of the 20th century. The hotel’s transformation not only influences Sandra’s future but also the lives and loves of five women around her. Gradually, space begins to emerge for each of them to make their own choices and shape their own futures. Thekla Reuten, Joes Brauers, Florence Vos Weeda, Mustafa Duygulu star.

 

 THE MARQUISE FROM PORTUGAL

This six part historical series is being done for Portuguese broadcaster RTP following a great poet from the late 18th century. From her beginnings in a Lisbon convent to the wild Viennese court, these are the stories of a fearless Marquise who will rock the ruling elite. Leonor is torn between two loves – a Count and an Emperor – and in an era where literature, music, and cuisine blend, she must choose her destiny. Mediapro Studio has taken the international distribution rights at the recent Berlin Film Festival. It is an adaptation of the bestselling novel by Portugal’s Maria João Lopo de Carvalho about Leonor de Almeida Portugal, Marquise of Alorna – a poet, diplomat and revolutionary thinker, who was considered one of the most captivating women of the 18th century. 

 

SORORITY SERIES FROM FRANCE

Over in France we have this period set thriller done for France TV a tale of three women – a wet-nurse, a midwife and a grieving mother – pitched against a male-dominated world in a Paris of 1889. SORORITY follows Rose who leaves her rural home to become a wet nurse for a bourgeois family in Paris. There, she meets Odette, a midwife, who warns her that she won’t be allowed to keep her own child with her. Rose finds a solution, however risky: passing off her baby as that of Hélène de Gersande, a mother grieving the sudden loss of her infant. Rose, Odette and Hélène, three women from very different backgrounds, will have to join forces to carve out a place for themselves in a male-dominated world, and claim their freedom.

Kevin Costner's new six episode historical series THE GRAY HOUSE that tells the hidden history tale of four Southern women — a Virginia socialite and her mother, a formerly enslaved Black woman and a high-end prostitute — who served as key espionage agents for the Union, is ready to hit the small screens next week and start streaming on Prime Video from February 26th.

 

THE STORY AND THE CAST  

 The foursome are credited as unsung heroes who helped end the nation’s brutal cleavage in 1865. They operated deep inside the corridors of Confederate power and transformed an underground railroad into an effective underground spy network, risking life and liberty. Mary-Louise Parker, Amethyst Davis, Daisy Head and Ben Vereen lead the cast. Costner and Morgan Freeman are producing. The soundtrack of the series will feature new songs from Shania Twain and Jon Bon Jovi. Our dear Colin Morgan, Colin O'Donoghue and Sam Trammell will also star. The tender and flirty, slick and dangerous series goes deep undercover in 1980s East Berlin to explore a shadowy world of counter espionage and risky but irresistible relations. East Berlin, 1982. Martha, 24, is a deep cover agent for MI6. Surrounded by enemies and constantly under threat of her cover being blown, she tries her hardest to avoid detection by Friedrich, the new Stasi Head of Counterespionage against British Targets, Berlin Office. Finding herself caught between Friedrich and the reckless, arrogant (and incredibly attractive…) CIA operative Aaron Neeland (posing as Kurt Fischer), she is blind-sided by desire in this Cold War menage-a-trois. The risk of being garrotted or incarcerated is nothing compared to the horrifying ordeal of falling in love. Allowing yourself to be vulnerable and bearing your heart and soul? She'd rather have her fingernails pulled out.

Eisenhower. In the final days before the planned Allied invasion of Europe in 1944, Royal Air Force meteorologist James Stagg (Andrew Scott) must deliver a weather report to the Allied high command determining the feasibility of the planned D-Day. Leigh collides with Joseph Penn (Matthew Modine), a WWII  veteran and florist who encounters Leigh on a delivery. At the same time, the star attends a local psychiatric facility for electroconvulsive therapy. Amidst the backdrop of madness Leigh and Penn become each other’s sources of truth, beauty, and love. Jack Davenport is Laurence Olivier with Eoin Macken also in the cast.

According to Deadline, NBC has set Damon Wayans Jr. as the lead of their new drama pilot PUZZLE. After barely escaping a tragic fire, once promising college athlete Mike Brink is transformed by a traumatic brain injury that gives him the unique ability to see the world in an unexpected way and helps him solve crimes with local police. Mike makes his living by betting on sports and is uniquely equipped to do this because he developed Acquired Savant Syndrome as a result of the brain injury. This rare phenomenon gives him exceptional skills in puzzle-solving, higher math functions and pattern recognition.
