'VERSAILLES' EPIC TV SERIES
CHECK OUT THE FIRST PHOTOS!
Now, here's something exciting I've announced a year or so ago, but now we have the first photos from the sets: you can take a peak at the new French historical TV series VERSAILLES with all its lavish costumes and wigs! French television will air the epic TV spectacle this Autumn but the whole show is being shot in English language with mostly British actors (which the French aren't too happy about, but the idea is to be able to sell the show worldwide)! Similarly to THE TUDORS which depicted the English throne, VERSAILLES will follow the extravagant lives of the crowned heads at the French court!
GEORGE BLAGDEN IS LOUIS XIV
With delightfully charming VIKINGS star George Blagden leading the cast as the 28 year old French king Louis XIV, the ten episode $30 million worth VERSAILLES series produced by French Canal+ is written by CRIMINAL MINDS producer Simon Mirren. The story of the sweeping historical saga will revolve around the early years of the reign of Louis XIV, the grand and self-proclaimed "Sun King", when he ordered the vast and vastly expensive Palace of Versailles be built to house his court away from Paris and its intrigues in order to centralize the state around himself.

ALEXANDER VLAHOS PLAYS THE GRAND DUKE OF ORLEANS
Most of the series was shot in the VERSAILLES itself, including its dungeons and the spectacular Hall of Mirrors! Beside George Blagden as the king, charismatic Welsh actor Alexander Vlahos from BBC's MERLIN is portraying his brother and rival Grand Duke Philippe d'Orleans with whom he had a complex relationship! Dominique Blanc plays Anne of Austria. The rich and extremely expensive 17th century costumes are done by French designer Madeleine Fontaine who worked on AMELIE and A VERY LONG ENGAGEMENT. Check out the beginning of the trailer below to see the magnificent glimpses into the upcoming series!
Utter. Decadence. And I barely recognized the guy from Vikings.
ReplyDeleteBlagden is so delightful! And so is Vlahos! He is such a dear man, retweeted us a few minutes ago :)
DeleteAh. to be a actor and work in Versailles! Then I saw the scene with the wolves and remember they can get all bitey.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure these were some polite wolves :)
DeleteWhy so many period pieces lately? I hate period pieces. I hate periods. Maybe I have PMS.
ReplyDeleteThat made me giggle.
DeleteSuch blasphemy saying you hate period pieces at one of world's leading sites for historical series and films, Debs!
DeleteLooks like another epic historical series.
ReplyDeleteand we positively adore those
DeleteFrom Vikings to Versailles! I recognized George Blagden right away -- he's done such a good job in Vikings, I'm sure he'll shine as the Sun King!
ReplyDeletehe is such a lovely actor!
DeleteOhh, this sounds utterly delightful! As much as I love summer, I'll be looking forward to fall now!
ReplyDeleteHope somebody in US buys it for you :)
DeleteIf they don't, I'd say they are real dummies!
Deletewell, they don't have the tendency to buy foreign shows :) I bet European BORGIAS weren't aired in USA and they were the second most expensive European series before VERSAILLES :) and also much much better than Showtime's THE BORGIA
DeleteEuropean BORGIA is on Netflix in U.S. It did not air on any broadcast channel.
DeleteMadeleine Fontaine - costumes will definitely be exciting!!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure they will
DeleteDifficult to imagine a more prestigious framework!
ReplyDeleteexactly, Phil
DeleteLooking forward to this :)
ReplyDeleteglad to hear it!
DeleteIt must be so exciting for them to put on those costumes and relive a period of time none of us have ever experienced...then walk off to the sidelines and pick up their smartphones to check for text messages between scenes!
ReplyDeleteBlagden actually has a photo in full costume and with sneakers on his feet :)
DeleteYou got me excited! I'm definitely going to watch this.
ReplyDeleteShould be super fun!
DeleteVersailles... Went there in the summer of 1986. Almost got arrested too by some French cop who thought I looked like a kid terrorist. Never been to France ever since.
ReplyDeleteoh, noes! You had a terrorist youth? Who would have guessed....
DeleteWHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well, I was the victim of terrorism.... Does that count too?
Deletesure does, cops here once thought I was a foreign spy.....
DeleteIs bad series...!!!
ReplyDeleteIt had its moments. but it lost the plot at some point.
