FIRST HILMA PHOTOS
FROM LASSE HALLSTROM'S PERIOD SET MOVIE DRAMA
Scandinavian leading streamer Viaplay is quickly expanding its business around Europe and is planning to offer at least 70 Viaplay Originals by the end of 2022, with the wider plan of achieving around 12 million subscribers by the end of 2025. One of the ways to attract the audience is doing more English language programmes so they hired our favourite director Lasse Hallstrom to direct their original movie HILMA, which he also wrote, starring Game of Thrones star Tom Wlaschiha!
NEW BIOPIC HILMA
explores
the life of revolutionary Swedish artist and feminist pioneer Hilma af
Klint (1862-1944, played by Tora Hallstrom), and beside streaming later
this year on Viaplay, it will also bow this fall in theaters! In the
film, Tom Wlaschiha stars as Rudolf Steiner, the Austrian artist and
founder of the anthroposophical spiritual movement. Steiner became a key
figure and mentor for Hilma af Klint who created more than a thousand
striking paintings, sketches and watercolors that remained largely
unknown until decades after her death. The film explores the enigmatic
life of Klint, who navigated through the artistic scene to
eventually become one of the Western world’s first abstract artists.
Jazzy De Lisser portrays Thomasine Andersson, who became Hilma’s close
friend and travel companion after working as a nurse for her mother.
Lena Olin (the movie is a family affair as Lena is Lasse's wife and Tora
is their daughter), Lily Cole, Rebecca Calder, Maeve Dermody, Catherine
Chalk as the members of her group of female artists, Anna Björk as her mother, Adam Lundgren as her brother, Martin
Wallström as her nephew and Jens Hultén as her brother, also star.
We actually quite like Scandinavian TV series, but I am not sure about this one. We will see..
ReplyDeleteThey are very popular in EUrope, their books too.
DeleteOh so that is where Tom went after his character was killed in this last season of Das Boot. I have enjoyed a couple of Danish period series, but I'm not into Swedish stuff.
DeleteHe is all over the place and yet he escapes me as I do not usually watch stuff he is in. Danes and Nordic people are more refined than the Swedes when it comes to programmes? I like Scandinavian people a lot, the only ones I do not understand are the Fins, their culture is not my cup of tea, very dark. Swedes are actually in my top five best visitors beside the US, UK, Fr and the Ruskies.
DeleteTaking into consideration that I seldom watch anything but period piece, this is my contribution. Never seen anything from Norway. I tried watching The Restaurant and developed an everlasting distaste for Swedish series.Oon the Danish Front, I have grown fond of The New Nurses and adore Badehotellet. It is everything Hotel Portofino should have been and never was.
ReplyDeleteI knew next to nothing about Finnish culture or history. Then I saw an excellent Cold War yarn, Shadow Lines, left me begging for more. In fact it beats the hell out of recent Anglo spy stories.
Norway had a couple of nice historical films in last ten years, Kon Tiki and some Viking movies too. They are hot as holy eff, but I generally have terrible hots for everything white skinned, blue eyed and blond haired LOL
DeleteFins like very dark, bloody tales, ominous legends and their folk music is actually heavy metal LOL I also never liked them politically. And they have the ugliest language together with the Hungarians and Portuguese people.
MM, Gattocito you and your appetite for Aryan gods. But I won’t be a hypocrite. Although on principle don’t find blondes attractive, I have a soft spot or Alex Skarsgard (I call Stellan “my Daddy-in-law) and the only Norwegian film I ever watched, “Headhunters” was because of that Viking beauty called Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.
DeleteNikolaj is gorgeous too, he is Danish, methinks, right? You probably also watched famous Arn medieval movies which had all of them in the cast from Stelan to Sofia Helin, Gustaf Skarsgard and Vincent Peres to the lead Joakim Natterqvist whom I have not seen in a long time. You can even ask your brother to find you Arn books if you haven't already read them. I am currently reading Scarlett Pimpernel.
DeleteYes, Nik is half Danish-half German. Funny you should mention Arn. When I became a Thronie ad suffered my first GOT Deprivation, I fell upon this film. I’m embarrassed to say I didn’t get it, didn’t like it, knew nobody (I do now) in the cast. It’s time to rewatch it. I saw you are digging into Baroness Orczy. Good for you. Next step, watch the film versions. Stay away from the Richard E. Grant. My favorite is the Anthony Andrews -Jane Seymour from the 80s.
DeleteI liked Arn because of the storyline, it covered a long time and I life such stories when we follow the development of a character and it was epic with everything he went through. My friend Fanny also did not like it if I remember well, and that just confirms that Europeans like different kind of storytelling than Americans.
DeleteI was defo thinking of finding an adaptation of Pimpernel, probably with Christofer Casanova if I can find it. I did find and download your fave version of Lion in Winter and will watch it soon. Richard E. Grant was Pimpernel??? What? But he is godlike gorgeous in the books, and Dicky is fugly LOL
I like to see more companies coming out with new streaming services that will give the US streamers some competition. Though I am not sure about this one, I'll definitely keep my eye on what other English titles they come out with.
ReplyDeleteWell, Netflix is dying very quickly and not doing anything about it except ordering even more horror and Korean shows, so I imagine they will be dead in a few years and others will take over. Probably Amazon, Paramount and Apple.
DeleteI’m going to butt in because it is a subject dear to my heart. We are all expecting the possible demise of Netflix, but it’s going to be a long agony painful to the platform and for us the clientele. I still fear a sudden resurrection.
DeleteIf Netflix (and hopefully Disney) goes down or becomes a minor server, I don’t think Paramount could replace it. The menu is reduced and uninspiring. Amazon, yes. Moreover, although its products are slightly above mediocre it offers the chance to access other streaming services.
Theresa one of the many fortunes of living in USA is that we have a myriad of streaming platforms, and some are very affordable. If it’s foreign content you are looking for, you can go to AcornTv that carries Italian, French even Portuguese series together with British and Australian classics and modern shows. It’s only $ 5.99 and you can subscribe via Amazon or some local cable companies (I do it via Spectrum/Times Warner).
Then there is MHz Choice, you can subscribe via Amazon or just through its page. It’s S 7.99 but it gives you the most amazing library of continental European films, tv series and documentaries.
Finally, there is PBS Amazon that carries all the PBS programming including some lost gems like The Jewel in the Crown. It also encompasses a European streaming service called “Walter Presents” that adds English subtitles to series from France to Estonia. You can only access it via Amazon, and it is $5.99
And then you have the free stuff, that of course come with commercial cuts. I have found good free stuff in Freevie a system that works via IMDB. YouTube has everything that has been made in the XX c, with English subs, but the quality sometimes it is not the best. On the other hand, it has a very complete library of Russian films and TV shows with English subs and watchable quality.
Finally, we are so lucky to access the gem of free TV, Tubi. It has everything: shows, documentaries, realities, and movies from all over the world. they even have several divisions to make the search more friendly like “Foreign Films: “Foreign TV” and “British TV.”
There is something delightfully ominous in the fact that the demise of Netflix is close to your heart LOOOL
DeleteThank you for all of this information, Malena. I have taken a screen shot of your post and will explore these streaming options more this year. I rarely find anything worthwhile on Netflix, Hulu, or even Amazon. Dezzy spoke praises about Tubi the other day and I think I will start there. I think I will bite the bullet and add on more PBS onto my Amazon account. I’ve been holding off on it because paying for another streaming service wasn’t sitting well with the husband. I’ll have to decide if I want to nix Netflix or Hulu first. Sadly, I think the demise of Netflix is a long way away. Kind of like I despise Facebook and would love to see them go away as well, but I’ve been saying that for years and they are sadly still going strong. Though my children (both grown adults) like to tell me Facebook is for old people, their fall is inevitable now that the younger generation prefers Snapchat and TikTok. It’s a wait and see game right now wondering how long it will take. Netflix will surely outlast Facebook though, imo.
DeleteFacebook is now Meta and I hope it will not die as I will die with it probably too. For us who have no social life, Facebook is the safe haven no matter how horrid it is.
DeleteI’m with you Gattocito, FB is the last outpost for us old folks and then we can access messenger through it. With all their flaws FB and YT are the only network media I use.
DeleteNetflix is one great joke. they were expecting to lose 3 million subscribers they only lost one million. They rejoice over gaining about the same amount of clients in India but in order to do so they had to reduce the prize and India already is paying just like a token fee. Whereas the lost million subscribers come from Canada and the USA where we pay $15 monthly and probably more once they enforce that ridiculous different address fee 9so far in Latin America it is half the local monthly price) o here it will be like $80 more per year.
Indeed, I also use Twitter, but mostly for business with the celebs, not much human interaction there, although I do exchange messages with Fanny there.
DeleteI think Facebook lost more, but they cleverly divided the lost numbers by continents, but when you add them all up, they lost more than a million just in USA and then the same number around the world, plus Russia with about 700 hundred thousand. That is a lot, methinks. And they blame it all on people sharing passwords, so now they are introducing new bigger fee starting with your South America LOL Right, that is the reason you lost numbers, not your terrible choice of programmes....
Hi Theresa this is the link tubitv.com
ReplyDeleteI forgot to tell you, because it is FOX, you get Fox News Live and other news media and channels like A&E. You can download it to your PC, laptop, or tablet and either enjoy it in there or transfer it to your smart TV
About PBS Amazon, get rid of Hulu (I would advise to hang on to Netflix for a little while more) and subscribe if you want to
a) Have access to old BBC/ITV shows like The Jewel in the Crown
b) Have access to European shows from Walter Present.
c) If you care only to watch 21c Masterpiece and Masterpiece Mystery, there is a cheaper choice. Thirteenth Passport that gives you all of that (plus some Walter Presents series like Seaside Hotel, Tannbach and Resistance) for $5 monthly.

That is the “donation” page (it’s what they call subscription. They don’t think of themselves as a streaming platform) Here is the page where you can browse their programming

Good Luck!
While many aren't sure of this one, I find it something that I would probably really enjoy! Give me a glass of wine, a quiet house, a few baskets of clean laundry, and I'd be all over this show.
ReplyDeleteOr without the laundry!
DeleteThank you! I can swing $5 monthly donation without canceling anything else right now especially if they offer content I will enjoy! Will head to the link in a minute and see what looks good.
ReplyDeleteFacebook lost my support when they started gouging pages to reach their followers. I have 9,000 likes and over 8,000 of those people hit the follow button, yet Facebook only send my posts to 200 subscribers, max unless I pay $20 to reach 200 more. And it goes up from there. No thank you. And I have a flag on my personal account because I jokingly told my best friend she was being a bitch (the way many of us girls kid with our girl friends) on one of her posts, and Facebook flagged it for "bullying". If I slip again, I get a 30 day ban. To me, it's all about control with Facebook. I do understand that it can be a great tool to connect with loved ones, but I personally find myself feeling much happier not being so connected all the time. I ended up deleting the app from my phone and may end up deleting it altogether off my other devices soon.
You are such a bully bitch, dahlink LOL Cannot believe Facebook did that! You will not delete the app because then you would be disconnected from my life and we cannot have that.
DeleteThat is a wise decision, Theresa. Thirteenth Passport was my first streaming service. It took me over a year to binge through its content and only then I moved to Netflix. While in Passport don’t forget to check Seaside Hotel. It’s a lovely Danish series, and for good measure, subscribe to Tubi as well.
