THE LONG SONG, set during the final days of slavery in 19th century Jamaica, follows the strong willed, young slave July (Tamara Lawrance) on a plantation owned by her odious mistress Caroline Mortimer (Hayley Atwell). When a charming new arrival to the island, Robert Goodwin (Jack Lowden), becomes the new overseer, July and Caroline are both intrigued by his seemingly revolutionary determination to improve the plantation for the slaves and mistress alike. The story is told from July’s perspective as she looks back over her life; the tone is funny, defiant and indomitable. It’s a story about the injustices that humans

  1. Slavery, what a terrible never ending subject! Nowadays, we have various forms of 'modern' slavery - work of people from poor countries as illegal immigrants in wealthy countries. Those in favor of illegal immigrants are in fact, under the guise of humanity, favoring modern slavery.

    1. I agree! It is a neverending vicious cycle. Not to mention people who work and toil almost as slaves in the factories that big companies have in Asia and in third world countries. The conditions there are dickensian if not worse. And we all support it by buying shoes, gadgets, whatever....

    1. I did always consider her a villainous person :P She will fit right in it. She was perfectly evil in Howards End as well, destroyed families, killed an innocent man, golddigging hag.

  3. Yippee! A Downton Abbey film! I wanted to see the castle while we were in England, but it was too far away from everything else we had planned. Since I'm the only one who watches the show here, the rest of the family voted no to adding extra time to visit :(
