  1. my husband might be interested in this. I don't have many trust on German series though.

  2. I find myself relying totally on German period pieces, they seem to be the only ones that know how to make them anymore.

    1. It was Italy before, now it is Germany, France also has production of them but they are impossible to find anywhere, and Spanish I just don't like. Russia also gives us something nice occasionally.

    2. I'm with you. Spanish period pieces are embarrassing and so full of presentism. Russians are the best, but they are seldom translated. I got an American streaming service , MHz Choice, that shows only European (continental) series, but nothing from Russia, and French stuff consists mostly period films, not series

      Delete
    3. Yes, Russian series do not get translated, sadly, some of them I managed to watch only because I found subs on some of their Russian torrent sites, but it is very difficult to find. Spanish ones also do not get translated unless they are on Amazon or Netflix. It is very sad. I still haven't seen Young Voltaire, Ines of my Soul, Ivan the Terrible, Godunov, because I cannot find subs or torrents.

    4. I haven't seen Young Voltaire, the Russian series you mentioned, i found in Tubi, Ines del Alma Mia is supposed to be (with English subs) in Amazon Prime. I get to watch some Spanish series in Spanish channels since I'm bilingual, but...you don't miss much.

    5. Oooh, I haven't been on Tubi, I've just visited it but it does not have any of the Russian series, sadly. What do you recommend watching over there?

      Delete
    6. So Tubi just lke Netflix has different programs for Europe? I hate that. Here in North America, we have about 20 Russian series (recently they added a 2020 Ukranian series so it shows they are up to date). About a dozen are period pieces. It's hard to tell u which one is the best, but I heartily reccomend "the Optimists". I've been so busy watching Russian stuff, I had little time for else. I mostly watch period pieces. I saw a Serbian thriller "Black Sun"I believe the exact name is "Shadows over the Balkans". Loved it!

    7. I did search for Ivan The Terrible and Godunov there and came with nothing, but maybe I need to register first? Or maybe they really do differ between continents, which is logical given that many national broadcasters buy Russian series for airing.
Yes, Shadows over the Balkans are massively popular here, the first series ever sold to HBO here. I think they are doing new seasons, but I'm not sure, I don't follow domestic shows, but they do shoot them like crazy here.
I'm finishing a lot of series this week, and will need about five new ones next two weeks to fill up my schedule. I will replace El Cid with Cook of Castamar and will start North Water. I also need to watch the third season of Westworld before I forget what the series was even about LOL I also have German Das Boot and Miss Scarlet and the Duke in waiting.

    8. About Tubi: I’m afraid, there are bad news. Because of GDPR the service is no longer available in Europe. They promise to relaunch it in a near future. So far, it is only available in Australia, NZ, and North America (USA, Canada, and Mexico).
About Black Sun: I am always on the lookout for period drama and I’ve been in the USA, since 2017, but I never heard of it until it was shown in Latin America (recently) by Eurochannel, so I don’t think HBO showed it here in the States. It went straight to Amazon where you have to pay extra to watch the two seasons. Tubi has the first season with English subtitles for free. I heard that there is a third season planned. The first season is beyond words (although they got the women’s customs wrong). It’s similar and almost as good as “Babylon Berlin.” I had never seen Serbian series before. Except “Scent of Rain in the Balkans” but I don’t know if its Serbian or Bosnian, but I didn’t like it.
About what to watch. I have the same predicament. I have nothing new to watch until autumn. Now, they have Shadowplay in Netflix but it’s only eight episodes. I’m watching old stuff. “Manhattan” (excellent) in Hulu and “Panam” (very bad) in Tubi .
About “Das Boot.” I love it! It has become my favorite series, but there is a problem. They just finished shooting the third season, but in the USA, we are stuck with only the first one. Huu’s got the rights and won’t show the second season. I found it in YT with Spanish subtitles, but they forced the person who was showing it to erase it. Then a Brazilian guy posted it dubbed to Portuguese, and they erased his whole channel! It’s so unfair. Hope you find something good to watch soon.
For some reason, I am not into north Water. It reminds me of The Terror. Miss Scarlett is ok, but sometimes it feels like Miss Phryne Fisher. I hated El Cid. I stick to the old Hollywood version any time.

      Delete
    9. Scent of Rain was ours, based on a very popular book. They mostly shoot crime series here, not a lot of period set pieces, unless they are about WW1.
I'm skipping Shadowplay because I heard Russian are depicted in a nasty biased way there. I don't like that.
I do expect that North Water is like Terror and even that one wasn't good at all LOL I will watch Scarlett only for Stuart Martin because he is a friend of our blog, but cannot stand the actress.
Hopefully we get something from BBC or ITV, but I think they will have mostly crime shows this year again, so I will probably just stick to occasional nice series from Channel 5. BBC is not even shooting period set pieces anymore because all of the previous recent ones flopped for being woke. And they don't get funds from the government if they don't make them woke.

    10. This chat is getting to be very enlightening. Thank you for your time.
I didn’t like “Scent” (I didn’t like the book either) r it ed me to have a poor opinion of Serbian period rama, but “Black Sun” was an epiphany, so good. The acting, the shooting from Belgrade to Macedonia, the houses, the recreation, the characters everything was top notch.
Shadow play has come under attack because of its anti-Russian slant, but let’s not forget that it is a German co-production, and you can’t find a WII drama made in Germany that doesn’t have that bias. It’s the same with Russian series. It’s why I stay away from WWII Russian series; their Germans are so evil and cartoonish.
The first season of “The Terror” (the second was a mess) was very harrowing and well made, but the producers had a problem with the love story. It forced them to stray from the book and the ending made no sense at all.
Funny, I liked Kate Phillips a lot when I saw her in “Wolf Hall”, but now she seems omnipresent. I’m tired of seeing her all over the place. I heard she is in Belgrade shooting Season II of Miss Scarlett
This woke business is destroying English-speaking television because they do it wrong. It happens with things that are not period pieces. It happened with the reboot of Gossip Girl, and it’s a waste of money so they should stop it.
I assume you are referring to the last Anne Boleyn mess. And yet Miss Scarlett and All Creatures Great and Small got second seasons and they are not terrible woke. BBC can forget about period drama, but Starz is making a lot of that. And there are customers that still haven’t had much exposure like “Leonardo”, the new Around the World in 80 Days, and that Glow and Darkness thingy. So far, we don’t know where they are going to land. Aside from “The Great’s second season, I have nothing to look forward until Christmas when HBO is rumored to show ‘The Gilded Age”.

      Delete
    11. Oh, I did not know they' re in Belgrade shooting Scarlett, will have to stalk down The Duke LOL I once stalked down Adrien Brody like that when they were shooting that movie with Rachel Weisz in my city LOL
Don't forget that Starz epic dramas (Serpent Queen and Becoming Elizabeth) will both be very woke, Catherine de Medici will for example have a black woman for her first maid and helper at the court.
Oh, I hated The Great with passion, I've never seen something as nastily offensive as that one, so vulgar, disrespectful and primitive. I will miss my boo Gwylim Lee in it, though. Don't forget we have Foundation and Wheel of Time before winter and probably something international will find its way to Amazon or Netflix. Maybe somebody will buy Germinal, I need to do a post on it this week as it will hit Seriesmania next week.

    12. There is so much more in this cult of enforced diversity. I have no problem with colored actors portraying Black characters if they fit in the plot or if they are portraying real historical figures like in “Victoria” or “The Spanish Princess” but I hate when they play characters, we know were white or they insert black characters in societies you know were predominantly Caucasian.
I also hate the nitpicking of those that promote this compulsory diversity. They complain if a Black character is not a protagonist, if he/she doesn’t get enough lines, if its skin is too light, if they look Eurocentric, etc.,
“The Great” was so grotesque it ended up being funny because nobody thought it was a historical tale. On the other hand, HBO’s Catherine the Great that pretended to be factual and serious was downright offensive.
I hate to say this, but the rotten ending of Game of Thrones freed me of any love for fantasy or SF. I couldn’t stand the Witcher, and I don’t know which is worse The Irregulars or The Nevers. So, I’m not looking forward to The Wheel or Foundation.

    13. I wouldn't hate it so much if they cast some good actors, but they always cast the very worst = like in Sanditon, Still Star Crossed, Spanish Princess, even David Oyelowo was godawful in Les Miserables eventhough everybody else was amazing in the cast. And the actress that played Anne Boleyn was just atrocious, I felt embarrassed just watching her absolute lack of the knowledge of the era in the trailer.

      Delete
    14. I hadn't thought about it. obviously you can't say ill about them, but certainly there is no Sir Sidney Poitier, no Morgan Freeman, no Samuel L., no Denzel among them. And some are kind of annoying (perhaps it's the acting) like the leads in Bridgerton and Lovecraft Country

      Delete
    15. I haven't even ventured into Bridgerton LOL and don't plan to as I value my mental health too much LOL That one looks like utter trash and I'm offended that it got such a hype and awards, but it is because Shonda is friends with Obamas. To glorify such a garbage is just a sad proof of how ridiculous the times we live in are.

      Delete
    16. It’s sad but I have to agree with you. The saddest part is that ‘Bridgerton” is the one period drama that has some future. Most period dramas of recent are cancelled after the first season. Some deserve it like “World in Fire”, but others don’t. Every September, I draft a list for my blog of incoming period drama shows. This is the first year that I have next to nothing: Grantchester’s sixth season, The Great’s second and a Telemundo soap opera that begins in September. And yet I look at your roll of epic shows and there are so many good projects that never hit the screen.

      Delete
    17. Cannot say I agree with you on World of Fire, that one was filled with lies and anti Russian propaganda, I gave up on the first episode, it was just too manipulative. I do love the lead actor, though.
I should do an Autumn list too soon, it will probably be sad like you say. The saddest thing is that there won't even be comedies and I love two multicam sitcoms a week to cheer myself up, but US has killed comedy hour on almost all of their channels this season.

      Delete
    18. I gave up on sitcoms after they imposed political correction. You can’t make fun of anything these days. World on Fire” went beyond lying, it was positively libelous, especially with the poor Poles. Netflix has had a strange habit this summer, throwing in foreign period pieces with little warning in advance. They did it with” The Cook of Castamar”, “Shadowplay/The Defeated” this August and now I’ve just heard that “Jaguar” will debut on September 22.

      Delete
    19. I only pick out the safe, wholesome ones, that fill me up with warmth and laughter, and I do ditch the ones that become too woke.
Yes, I have noticed that about Netflix, and also the fact that their programme has become very bad in recent months, there was usually at least one good thing a month there, now there will be nothing till winter, they have nothing interesting in offer this Autumn, which is strange, because at least they can buy anything they want from international productions for little money. Let us blame it on corona to avoid pessimism LOL
      What is Jaguar?

      Delete
    20. The decay precedes the pandemic. Netflix has gotten so bad that I was planning to cancel my subscription. We pay $15 a month to watch nothing. This summer I’ve only watched “The Cook of Castamar” and “Shadowplay”. I’m rewatching “Babylon Berlin” just so I don’t feel bad about spending money on mediocre content (still is better than Amazon).
Jaguar is a Spanish production. It’s about a group of Spanish (not Jewish) Mauthausen survivor that hunt Nazis hiding in Spanish society. It’s set in the early 60s. It can’t be worse than Amazon’s Hunters.

    21. I started Cook of Castamar this week, the first episode was not all that bad, although I hate sunburnt Spanish visuals and the leads are so ugly, LOL, good thing a few of the supporting stars are really hot. I checked Jaguar yesterday, not my cup of tea, but I applaud anything period set.

    22. HaHaHa Michelle Jenner is cosider quite cute (she's a great actress) bt as THe ook she is supposed to look dowdy. Roberto was stunning in his youth but has aged badly. My problem with the series is the forced inclusion of feminist ideas, gratuitous sex that would have been anachronic is Spain then, and that it has kept only the title of a very good novel.

      Delete
    23. Yes, I assumed they are just popular over there, but oh, God, Almighty, fugly they are, fuglyyyy! And his moma the duchess looks like something straight from comedy or parody LOL But I also find El Cid fugly as hell and I know he is popular, Jamie Lorente, I'd never put someone that unattractive for a lead role. I know, I'm superficial like that. But he does not even have any special acting talent, just makes silly faces in every scene sporting that idiotic mullet on his head. Yes, there is a lot of sex in it, hope we will see some full nudity too in the castle of Castamar LOL

      Delete
    24. No, you don’t sound superficial at all. If you dislike an actor or they try to sell you a sex symbol that you don’t find sexy, that alone can kill a movie/series for you. It used to happen to me with Richard Gere when he was young. The fuglyness of El Cid goes beyond its lead, it’s grotesque with those phony battles created with CGI and wooden marionettes. Jaime Llorente is anything but El Cid. I’ll take Charlton Heston over him any time. This is the great Spanish hero, the utter symbol of Hispanic soul and it’s portrayed by a guy that plays a juvenile delinquent in “Elite” and loos like one, someone that would fall on his face if you handed him El Cid’s sword. El Cid is just one more example that Amazon Prime can’t make period pieces

      Delete
    25. Oh, yes, Gere was never a pretty man. The same goes for that wifebeater Depp. Did you know that they haven't even explained why the series is called EL CID since they never call him that in the show itself. I expected they will explain it at some point but they haven't. And the end the second season was just stupid. He is angry on king Sancho of Leon because he wants to kill his sister Uraca who tried to kill him several times and then he leaves him for that. Like da eff? What is he supposed to do, let her try and kill him third time? It was just mucho stupido. Good thing I finished it. I will start North Water and Undoing with Nicole Kidman next week as I finished Moonstone this week. It is some silly BBC period set series from a few years ago.

    2. I got hit with a new Blogger glitch today! My post today was flagged for going against community guidelines. I reported it and it is currently "under review".. but what in the world? Have you ever experienced this before?

    3. I used to get a lot of ads deleted on my posts because at the beginning of my blog, if you remember, I had a lot of hot photos of celebrities LOL and you cannot show here not even a trace of pelvis or cleveage, so I got about fifty of those reports over the years until I managed to clean up all those old posts, it wasn't an easy task, mind you I had photos of Tom Hardy showing his pubes here in the old days LOL Ah, blissful days...
What did you do exactly? Did they say?

      Delete
    4. Never had that happen but doesn't surprise me. Blogger sucks. They tend to hit me with invalid traffic a lot for their ads. Like, block the feckin' bots then, asshats. I'm surely not telling them to come my way.

      Delete
    5. Wait, since when do you have ads on your blog? LOL Is my ad blocker hiding them from me?

      Delete
    6. I don't know what it is, it isn't telling me. Just gives me a red eye ball and that I'm "under review". It was a cute post about our Coney Island trip!

      Delete
    7. Maybe some of the restaurants did not like what you said about them in it? lol But is probably just some Blogger mistake, given that nobody even managed to see it before they took it down. I had that happen to me at Facebook for my page. They will say your posts are restricted due to guideline violations without telling me which violations and then after a few days they just continue like nothing happened, there is no communication with them over there, it is a vile tyranny.

      Delete
    8. Tyranny is right! At least tell me what to fix instead of making me guess? I deleted the post, but copied and will try again for next week.

    10. Sometimes I have ads, sometimes I don't. Seems like I am always on restriction for them for some reason or another. Between them and Amazon, I'm about fed up with ads these days.

      Delete
    11. I'm fed up with them as they always give me the same ones and usually for things I'm not interested in at all, Google really really does not know me at all. Sometime they will even put some offensive ad here.

  4. I honestly can't remember if I ever read The Witching Hour. I went through an Anne Rice phase in the late 90's and early 2000's. I'll have to go read an excerpt and see if it jogs my memory any.

    1. It has three books, that series, methinks. There are some books that I have in my shelves and cannot remember if I already read them or not even when I leaf through them LOL I'm like have I read this Catherine de Medici novel already or not? And I will read a few pages and it still won't tickle my memory. I sometimes buy books and don't read them for years because I never have time for it. Sometimes I will lose interest totally for something I was interested in when I bought it.

      Delete
    2. That's why I've stopped buying a lot of books and just borrow them from the digital library on my e-reader. I spent too much on books that I never got around to reading then ended up selling them for super cheap just to make room for new ones. And the cycle continued. I did go read the synopsis for the books and it's still not jogging my memory, so I must not have read them. I did give up on her when I heard she went all religious in her works, but from what I understand, she's back to her old, dark writing these days.

    3. Wait, she is still alive? I thought she was like dead long time ago LOL

      Delete
    4. I'm pretty sure she's still alive. I never heard otherwise.

      Delete
    5. Good for her LOL Here in my country so many middle aged male actors died from corona, literally whole generations, that I don't even know who is alive anymore.

      Delete
    6. She's definitely getting up there in years. I think she was publishing books back in the 70's. I don't think any of our actors died from corona yet. which is surprising since hardly any of them did the whole social distancing thing yet lectured us on its importance.

      Delete
    7. Our actors are known for their merry lives spent in pubs, it is a part of their culture to get wasted in pubs after plays and shootings, so I guess that is why they are so unprotected, and plus they are all stupid as holy eff. When I went to Novi Sad a few weeks ago literally just two or three of us wore a mask in the bus. And a hot boo next to me ate his pretzels without sanitizing his hands first at some point he even started biting his nails. And I'm talking hot urban hunk, not a hillbilly blues.

      Delete
    8. Dafuq is wrong with people. Even before the virus hit, why wouldn't he at least sanitize his hands before eating his pretzel? That's just nasty! Thankfully I see more people starting to mask up again here, but it's not helping much. Our hospitals are over capacity. Someone in my city was posting to Facebook from the parking lot of the hospital upset because her 10 year old son with cancer was spiking a fever and they wouldn't let him in since there were no beds. She had to sit in the parking lot until they found a suitable medical facility to handle him.

      Delete
    9. Nobody ever used sanitizer here except me before, they usually looked at me like I'm crazy when I pull out my antibacterial wet wipes in the bus and I've been doing it for two decades now. Nobody in my house ever washes their nasty hands either. We had flu literally every year while father was alive because he always brought it into the house. Even when we were small kids.
We never stopped wearing masks here in the shops and public places, but some who got vaccinated believe they have no obligation to wear them now in transport etc. Sorry to hear your hospitals are full again, ours are building new ones again especially for covid.

      Delete
    10. I've always been the same. I keep sanitizing wipes and hand sanitizer in my handbag at all times. People used to look at me like I was nuts when I'd whip out the wipes and clean the tables and chairs when we went out to eat. I guess they don't think I'm so crazy now LOL. I tried sending you hand sanitizers from Bath and Body Works last year but since they had alcohol in them, they got returned (remember that fiasco?)

      Delete
    11. I know, but no worries, one sanitizer lasts me for at least half a year or more, as I don't go to work every day, so I don't have a need for them. I use wipes more often, as I use them to wipe bags, zippers, everything I brought in, but I have a rather big stash of them as well LOL Speaking of stash, I still have a box and a half of your Tetley, so I'm stacked with that too :)
