FIRST THE CRITIC
PICS WITH IAN MCKELLEN & GEMMA ARTERTON
First images have been released for a film that actually premiered last year in Toronto but will hit UK cinemas September 13th starring Ian McKellen and Gemma Arterton in the lead roles alongside Mark Strong, Alfred Enoch, Romola Garai, Ben Barnes and Lesley Manville.
WHAT IS THE FILM ABOUT?
Based on Anthony Quinn's novel Curtain Call, THE CRITIC
set in 1930s London, is a thrilling tale of ambition, blackmail, and
desire with a dazzling anti-hero at its heart. When the most feared and
vicious theatre critic in town Jimmy Erskine (Mckellen), finds himself
suddenly in the cross hairs of the Daily Chronicle’s new owner David
Brooke (Strong), he strikes a Faustian pact with struggling actress Nina
Land (Arterton) who is desperate to win his favor.
Not sure it's my kind of movie.
ReplyDeleteNot sure what would be your kind of movie, Mary.
DeleteSounds juicy and has a good cast. Was it well received in Canada?
ReplyDeleteI think it was, although it did not get any special awards, methinks.
DeleteSounds like a really good one. Can't wait! We are watching the new season of The Tourist with charming Jamie Dornan these days...
ReplyDeleteI think I have the first season but still haven't watched it.
DeleteI'm unfamiliar with this story but sometimes it's nice for a story that is unfamiliar to get an airing. I'm in my 70s and some writers who were quite prominent in my younger days have fallen out of fashion. The cast is solid.
ReplyDeleteI think it is based on a play, but I am not sure. Yes, and the new ones are not exactly better than the old school, sadly. Cannot even imagine how the scene will look like once the good old thespians like Ian and Judi are gone. Judi said she will not work anymore as she cannot see any longer.
