BBC's annual festive A Ghost Story for Christmas series TV movie from Mark Gattis will this year be THE ROOM IN THE TOWER and will see Tobias Menzies playing Roger Winstanley, who has been haunted by an unsettling, recurring dream! It's 1944, and while sheltering during an air raid, Roger strikes up a conversation with Verity, a Wren. When he asks if she dreams, he begins to recount the haunting vision that has followed him formost of his life: a recurring dream of a mysterious house, a silent family on the lawn and an unseen, unidentified terror lurking in the room in the tower. But when he is invited to stay at a country estate eerily similar to the one in his dreams, and is assigned the very same room, he becomes increasingly disturbed as his nightmare begin to become reality. What is really lurking, waiting for him in the room in the tower? Airing on Christmas Eve on BBC Two as it has now become a holiday tradition in United Kingdom, this short TV drama also stars Joanna Lumley and Polly Walker.

The story follows two older men who meet while walking their dogs on Hampstead Heath. Netflix has sent us a trailer for their eight part series FOOL ME ONCE set to hit Netflix January 1st, with quite a stellar and rather hot cast which includes Richard Armitage, Michelle Keegan, Emmett J. Scanlan, Joanna Lumley.

 

Adapted from Harlan Coben's novel, it follows Maya Stern who is trying to come to terms with the brutal murder of her husband, Joe. But when Maya installs a nanny-cam to keep an eye on her young daughter, she is shocked to see a man she recognises in her house. Her husband, who she thought was dead… Detective Sergeant Sami Kierce leads the homicide investigation into Joe’s death while grappling with secrets of his own. Meanwhile, Maya’s niece and nephew, Abby and Daniel, are trying to find the truth about their mother’s murder, several months earlier. Are the two cases connected? While you are enjoying his Django series which launched last week, Matthias Schoenaerts has just scored a lead role in LE FAUX SOIR WW2 movie drama according to Screen Daily!  Set in 1943, it tells the story of when the Belgian resistance secretly produced a spoof version of the country’s leading newspaper, Le Soir, which had become a propaganda tool of the occupying Nazi forces. He will play Belgian resistance hero in the movie directed by Michael R. Roskam.

novel PARIS INTERZONE into mini TV series. As Variety reports, the ambitious series, which William Boyd is writing and is being co-produced by Ian Benson, will shed light on a counterintelligence program that was launched by the CIA and operated by a secret unit within the American embassy in Paris. Their mission was to infiltrate the literary cafes of the Left Bank in Paris and spy on expat American artists and authors. At that time in the U.S., under the McCarthy era, many authors, especially black and gay ones, were oppressed and jailed. The series will be a modern, glamorous noir thriller laced with a love triangle between a French editor and two American characters.

Ben Lewin, who also wrote the script, directed the movie which is a coproduction between USA, UK and Australia where the film was also shot. The film will premiere in September at Toronto Film Festival.

A month or so ago, I informed you that a new musical movie filled with opera is on its way and now we have the male lead revealed for FALLING FOR FIGARO, a romantic comedy which already features Danielle Macdonald and Joanna Lumley in lead female roles. Harlots star Hugh Skinner has joined the cast together with Shazad Latif, Rebecca Benson and Gary Lewis as Screen Daily reports. 

Danielle Macdonald plays a brilliant young fund manager, who decides to leave her unfulfilling job and long term boyfriend to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming an opera singer, in the Scottish Highlands. She begins intense vocal training with a former opera diva (Joanna Lumley) and meets a fellow student (Hugh Skinner) who is also training for an upcoming contest. The film will feature arias from famous operas including The Barber Of Seville, The Marriage Of Figaro, Don Giovanni, Romeo And Juliet and Carmen.

After launching her own production company, the star of many period set projects Natalie Dormer has joined with Freemantle on SPITFIRE SISTERS, an eight episode WW2 series which will follow the women of the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA), the ‘glamour girls’ of the battle as they take on one of the most dangerous jobs in the war. Filled with friendships, love, camaraderie, and deep tragedy and loss, the women of ATA were tasked with flying 90 different types of aircraft from base to base ready for the frontline. Female pilots from all over the world travelled to the UK to join the group but the glamour of being in the ATA came with the tragedy of flying during the war. SPITFIRE SISTERS is the war through the eyes of the women; the dangers they faced and their fight for acceptance and equality. Morgan Lloyd Malcolm is penning the scripts for the upcoming series.

In movie news today, Guy Pearce has taken over the lead role from Clive Owen in ANDORRA, but Clive is still in and will now play a supporting role of Toni Collette's husband. Vanessa Redgrave has also joined Gillian Anderson, Joanna Lumley in the movie in which Pearce will be Fox who arrives to ANDORRA in search of the chance to reinvent himself, but gets entangled with the ancient Mrs Reinhardt (Redgrave) as well as the Australian Dents (Collette and Owen) and Mrs Quay (Lumley), the kayaking matriarch of an Andorran dynasty who seems to recall Fox from long ago. As he finds comfort in the company of Miss Quay (Anderson), the mystery of his origin deepens. When a woman’s body is found, the local lieutenant, Afgroni  becomes strangely convinced that Fox is responsible. In TV news, as 'Deadline' reports, TNT has officially ordered a pilot for possible new series based on SNOWPIERCER sf cult movie with Chris Evans. With Josh Friedman as the show runner, it is set seven years after the world has become a frozen wasteland and the remnants of humanity inhabit a gigantic, perpetually moving train that circles the globe. The show questions class warfare, social injustice and the politics of survival.

Meanwhile, Fanny from Dezzy's spying squads has sent us the first trailer for ALI AND NINO epic love story with Adam Bakri and Maria Valverde (a very weak performance judging from the trailer)!

   Ali is an upper class Muslim man, whose family holds a great deal of power in Baku, Azerbaijan. At that time, before World War One, Azerbaijan was part of the Russian Empire. Nino, Ali's lover, is from neighbouring Georgia and is Christian, but the two are deeply in love and elope to the countryside. The story follows the two, who get married, through World War One, which only sees some of Ali's friends sent off to war. After the Russians surrender, however, conflict comes to Baku. Ali fights the Bolsheviks with the Azerbaijani militia and Nino helps nurse wounded soldiers during the March Days massacre in Baku.

Talking about ensemble casts, 'Deadline' reports that Christina Hendricks has joined Glenn Close, Gillian Anderson, Max Irons, Stefanie Martini, Terence Stamp in the first movie adaptation of Agatha Christie's CROOKED HOUSE. Written by Downton Abbey's Julian Fellowes, it  follows private detective Charles Hayward who is invited to solve a gruesome crime where nobody is above suspicion, including Sophia, his client and former lover.
