Beside the previously announced Agatha Christie series The Detection Club, British broadcaster BBC has announced work on THE HAIRDRESSER MYSTERIES as well to be produced in West Midlands. Created by Jim Cartwright it will follow a high-end hairdresser, Lily Petal, played by Sally Phillips, who opts out of the competitive city scene to buy a small village hairdressers at the top of a cobbled street. Everyone tells their hairdresser everything and soon she becomes the hub of her new village’s secrets and revelations. Using her own brand of uncannily developed hairdressing intuitive, empathy and understanding, Lily begins to solve the mysteries of the village.

Channel 5 and PBS Masterpiece have revealed first trailer for the 6th season of the beloved series ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL which returns September 25th in Great Britain. Based on James Herriot's books it will again have six episodes plus the traditional Christmas special in December. In USA the series will return probably at the beginning of the next year as it usually does in January. Season seven has been ordered already.

 

SEASON SIX RETURNS TO

 Yorkshire Dales for more human and animal tales but this time, the Skeldale gang is in a different situation, just as the war in Europe is coming to a close in 1945. Nicholas Ralph reprises his role as vet James Herriot, alongside Samuel West as his business partner Siegfried Farnon. Anna Madeley returns as dear Mrs. Hall, followed by Rachel Shenton (Helen Herriot), Callum Woodhouse (Tristan Farnon), Patricia Hodge (Mrs. Pumphrey), Tony Pitts (Richard Alderson) and Imogen Clawson (Jenny). News coming from Ireland is that Gabriel Beristain has cast Jack Hudson as the lead in historical series THE RATH AND THE ROCK about 16th Century Irish chieftain Uaithne mac Ruairí Ó Mórdha.

Some casting news with some of our favourite ladies, starting with Emily Blunt who has scored a lead role in WALK THE BLUE FIELDS based on a short story by Claire Keegan. Set in Ireland, the film will revolve around a woman faced with an impossible decision, when a past love triangle is almost uncovered on her wedding day. John Crowley will direct probably later this year or next year. Blunt is also producing the film.

 

CATE BLANCHETT IN SWEETSICK

Meanwhile, Cate Blanchett is set to topline a feature movie directorial debut of Alice Birch SWEETSICK. As Deadline reports, the fantasy movie, which Birch also wrote, follows a mercurial woman (Blanchett) with a strange and piercing gift – the ability to see what others most intimately need, often at great personal cost – who sets out on a journey home. The shooting will start as soon as this Autumn in the UK and Greece.

MURDER BEFORE EVENSONG

A review of new mystery and detective series coming to the small screens this Autumn, starting with MURDER BEFORE EVENSONG in which Matthew Lewis plays Canon Daniel Clement, a rector, who finds himself entangled in a murder investigation after a cousin of the church's patron is discovered with a fatal stab wound inflicted by secateurs, leading him to unravel the mystery. The six episode series will hit Acorn TV September 29th after it premieres in UK on Channel 5. See trailer here. 

 

  LYNLEY WITH LEO SUTER

Already launched earlier this week over on BritBox is a new four episode remake of LYNLEY detective series in which our lovely Leo Suter plays DI Thomas Lynley who together with DS Barbara Havers forms an unlikely police detective duo. Their contrasting backgrounds create tension, but they unite to solve crimes, navigating class and gender issues. Tom Forbes and Daniel Mays also star in the series out from September 4th and you can see the trailer here.

 

NEW MAIGRET FROM PBS MASTERPIECE

Launching a bit later on, October 5th over at PBS Masterpiece is MAIGRET in which gorgeous Benjamin Wainwright plays Chief Inspector Maigret a rising star in the Paris Police Judiciaire, relentless in his investigations, with an uncanny ability to get under the skin of the criminals he is chasing and a matchless knowledge of Paris.  DEATH BY LIGHTNING OVER AT NETFLIX

Netflix is bringing us Matthew MacFadyen in their period set investigation series DEATH BY LIGHTNING which arrives November 6th also starring Michael Shannon, Betty Gilpin and Nick Offerman. This period set four episode drama dramatizes the stranger-than-fiction true story of 20th U.S. President James Garfield and admirer Charles Guiteau, who assassinated him. I will post the trailer when it is released.

British Channel 5 is ready to launch small town mystery thriller THE RUMOUR with Rachel Shenton from September 10th! She plays a mother who moves to a small town and gets entangled with a group of mothers.  THE STORY SET IN 

 fictional Scottish village of Coldwater, sees Lincoln playing John, a repressed, depressed man who is shocked to find himself in middle age, secretly raging at his life as a stay-at-home dad. When his failure to intervene in a violent confrontation in a playground brings his identity crisis to a head, John ups and moves his family to the rural idyll of Coldwater, as far away from London as possible. Upon arrival, John is quickly befriended by his charming, confident next-door neighbour Tommy (Ewen Bremner), a devoted husband to the local vicar Rebecca (Eve Myles). He is a man of faith, a pillar of the community and self-appointed leader of the village’s all-male book group. John is both impressed and  fascinated by Tommy. His wife Fiona (Indira Varma) despises him. Fiona saw the move to Coldwater as an opportunity to leave the past behind them and reignite the spark in their fading marriage. When her husband’s relationship with their enigmatic new neighbour becomes increasingly intense, Fiona’s suspicions are aroused. She is unconvinced Tommy is all he seems to be. When John’s long-repressed rage comes to a head with disastrous results, he soon finds himself unexpectedly indebted to his new friend, unaware that Tommy himself is harbouring horrifying secrets. THE FORSYTES will arrive to British Channel 5 this Autumn and then later on cross the ocean to visit American audience sometime next year on PBS Masterpiece which has already renewed the new costume drama for a second season.
