THE POLISH MOVIE VERSION

It sometimes happens that the same book gets different adaptations but rarely within the same year which is happening this year with Boleslaw Prus' famous Polish classic THE DOLL (Lalka) which is getting both a Polish movie adaptation and a Netflix TV series this year. The movie comes from director Maciej Kawalski and should hit cinemas September 30th with Marcin Dorocinski and Kamila Urzedowska in the lead roles. In the film, wealthy merchant Stanislaw Wokulski (Marcin Dorocinski) falls tragically in love with beautiful yet vain Izabela Lecka (Kamila Urzedowska). His unfulfilled love leads to many foolish decisions sealing his fate.

 

 

The TV series version will stream on Netflix

NETFLIX TV SERIES VERSION

At the same time, also arriving sometime later this year is Netflix Polish original series directed by Paweł Maślona and set against the backdrop of 19th century Warsaw. It follows the complex tension between the wealthy merchant Stanisław Wokulski (Tomasz Schuchardt) and the aristocratic Izabela Łącka (Sandra Drzymalska). He is a successful merchant who finds himself torn between his progressive ideals and his infatuation with Izabela Łęcka, a haughty and vacuous aristocrat. Covering the themes of unrequited love, class conflict and Poland’s stagnation under the Third Partition the six episode saga is set to air towards the end of the year.

Back in December last year, I showed you the first images from new Russian historical movie QUEEN ANNA (Королева Анна) which finished shooting last winter over in Moscow and will have a long post production since it is scheduled to arrive into cinemas February 2027! And today we have the first posters and a trailer! Lead roles are given to our dear Sergey Bezrukov (who already played Boris Godunov in a series and is now playing another Russian famous ruler Yaroslav the Wise) and Ekaterina Voronina as his daughter princess Anna.   THE STORY OF THE FILM IS SET IN

Rus' of the 11th century. Grand Prince Yaroslav the Wise (Sergei Bezrukov) marries his daughter Anna (Ekaterina Voronina) to the King of the Franks. She views this dynastic marriage with fatalism, like all her sisters and brothers. She faces a 3,000km long, difficult, and perilous journey to France. Yaroslav entrusts the leadership of Anna's cortege and her protection along the way to the skilled warrior Ostromir (Ilya Malanin), who has proven his valor and loyalty to the prince.

DEZZY'S HISTORICAL LESSON 

It is interesting that the princess's cortege stretched for 600 meters and consisted of 100 horsemen, dozens of carriages, and carts filled with jewels and riches. As Yaroslav's favourite child, she married King Henry I of France and became the queen and even acted as the regent ruling the country while her son was still under aged. He will later rule the country for 48 long years as Philip I. Unusual for that age, she was literate and she even learned French before starting the journey to France. While our favourite French and Belgian actress Virginie Efira is over at Cannes Film Festival this week, we shall take a peak at her new movie drama PARALLEL TALES (Histoires paralleles) from director Asghar Farhad which has started playing in French cinemas as of this week. The star studded cast also includes Vincent Cassel, Pierre Niney, Isabelle Huppert, Catherine Deneuve and Adam Bessa. In search of inspiration for her new novel, Sylvie spies on her neighbors across the street. Channel 4 and Steven Moffat have produced new comedy series NUMBER 10 with Rafe Spall playing the prime minister, Katherine Kelly as his Chief of Staff, and Jenna Coleman as her deputy and today we have the first images to prove it. Laura Haddock and Richard Rankin also star! There’s a Prime Minister in the attic, a coffee bar in the basement, and a wallpapered labyrinth of romance, crisis and heartbreak in-between. Set in the only terrace house in history with mice and a nuclear deterrent, it’s the only knock-through in the world where a hangover can start a war. The government will be fictional and unspecific, but the problems will be real. We’ll never know which party is in power, because once the whole world hits the fan it barely matters. The series will air sometime this year.

In the film, Hans Christian Andersen, a socially awkward outsider, moves to Copenhagen with an impossible dream of conquering the city’s vibrant cultural life and becoming a famous artist. In a colourful world of actors, playwrights and benefactors, Hans Christian fights to gain recognition, acceptance, and love. The production should start towards the end of the year in Denmark.

East of Eden will arrive sometime this Autumn

After casting Florence Pugh and Christopher Abbott in the lead role, Netflix added Ciaran Hinds, Mike Faist and Hoon Lee to the cast of EAST OF EDEN mini series adaptation of Steinbeck's classic novel producedby Zoe Kazan, whose grandad Elia directed the original film, and now we have the first teaser for the series that will arrive sometime this Autumn. Set in California’s Salinas Valley over a period that stretches from the Civil War to the end of World War I, the epic novel tells the interconnected stories of the Hamilton family, an Irish immigrant family with nine children, and the Trask family, lead by the wealthy Adam Trask (to be played by Abbott in the seven part series). According to Deadline, Alex Proyas is set to direct historical epic THE HAKIM about legendary Bahrain ruler Shaikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa who led his country through an immense period of change over the course of 63 years from 1869 to 1932. The storyline will follow Shaikh Ali from his time as a young ruler who inherits Bahrain’s throne at 19-years-old following the death of his father. He must hold his family and nation together amid piracy, the collapse of the pearling economy, natural disaster and the discovery of oil that will reshape the future of the region.

In a case of life imitating art, this whodunnit explores the investigation behind her disappearance, strangely resembling an Agatha Christie novel itself where everyone in her life became a suspect. Vincent Cassel will play a retired Belgian police detective who gets drawn into the case, similar to Christie’s most famous detective Hercule Poirot.

SEASON TWO TEASER TRAILER IS HERE

Disney Plus and Hulu are all ready to release the second season of their popular, super juicy and irreverent soapy series RIVALS which will arrive next week May 15th with first six episodes, with other six arriving on some later date and today we have the fun character posters to celebrate the incoming release. The series is based on a book by Dame Jilly Cooper.

WHAT IS THE STORY? 

It follows David  Tennant as an owner of a British TV station in the 80s and Aidan Turner as a TV host who forms a rival station with politician and sports star played by Alex Hassell. Filled with scandals, treachery, nudity and sex romp, the series was a huge hit. The second season will have even more wit, desire, and jaw-dropping twists. Power struggles intensify, rivalries deepen and ambition pushes loyalties to the brink. Set in the stunning Cotswolds countryside and against the backdrop of the glamorous, high-stakes world of 1980s British television, the second instalment reunites the all-star cast who captivated fans and critics, while introducing some exciting new faces. Rupert Everett will be Malise Gordon, her husband and Campbell-Black’s former show-jumping coach and mentor. Maxim Ays, Holly Cattle, Oliver Dench, Amanda Lawrence, Bobby Lockwood, Eliot Salt, and Jonny Weldon are also the new faces in the cast.
