MARGRETHE SERIES FROM DENMARK

Today's stop in our search for brand new period set international films and series is over in Scandinavia, starting with new Danish period set series MARGRETHE which follows a young girl which will grow up to become queen Margrethe II who recently abdicated in favour of her son Frederick. With her fate sealed from birth, the series follows her and her family’s daily life at Amalienborg, the residence of the Danish royal family, as well as the employees at court. Beginning in 1940, the six episode series will embrace the royal family for better or worse, on the palace’s polished floors and as they face political dilemmas, but first and foremost tell the story of the girl who was born a princess – and becomes heir to the throne as a young teenager in 1953. Done for Danish TV2, it stars Nikolaj Lie Kaas and Josefin Asplund as King Frederik IX and Queen Ingrid, Kirsten Lehfeldt as Queen Alexandrine and Henrik Larsen as King Christian X, while Margrethe is played by several different child actors.

 

 THE SWEDISH CONNECTION FROM NETFLIX

Over from Sweden comes new historical film with Henrik Dorsin and Sissela Benn, THE SWEDISH CONNECTION which will hit cinemas at the beginning of February and then stream on Netflix from February 19th. Set in 1942, the film takes place while Sweden attempts to keep a low profile to avoid provoking Germany and risking occupation.The story centers on the legal department of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs which, headed by Gösta Engzell, initially leaves most Jewish visa applications untouched to maintain the country’s neutrality. However, the arrival of a newly appointed staff member, Rut Vogel, changes the dynamic. As she begins to question the practice, coinciding with the circulation of rumors regarding extermination camps, a dangerous policy shift begins.

Netflix has announced that one of their Swedish originals in 2026 will be four part drama BYTET with our dearest Jakob Oftebro in the lead role. In an effort to save their marriages, Stockholm based Carl (Fares Fares) and Helene (Frida Gustavsson) arrange a holiday house swap with Adam (Jakob Oftebro) and Scarlett (Emma Appleton), who live in Sicily. But upon arriving at their new exclusive home, Carl and Helene start to sense that something feels off. The house doesn’t quite match the pictures of the romantic villa, and unsettling questions arise about the strangers now living in their home. Who are these people they’ve traded homes with? Meanwhile, Adam and Scarlett move into Carl and Helene’s house in Stockholm’s archipelago, a stunning, modern architectural dream. But despite its beauty, things feel awkward. Why are the neighbours so nosy? Why is the walk-in closet locked? As both couples try to reconnect amidst growing suspicions, dark secrets begin to surface.

As Deadline reports, an English language series, a co-production between Iceland and Sweden SALE will be presented at MipCom. Set in 1627, Salé will follow an Icelandic mother and daughter captured by Barbary privateers and sold into slavery in Morocco. Separated in the markets of Salé, they must forge new identities to survive, one clinging to her Christian faith and past, the other embracing Islam and a dangerous new world. Their fates become entangled with Jan Janszoon’s as his pirate empire faces threats from rivals and his own family. Frank Lammers will play Jan, also known as Murat Reis, a real-life Dutch sea captain who converted to Islam and became one of the most powerful pirate admirals in the North African city of Salé! Two 15 million euro seasons are planned.

Continuing our spotlight on new series from international markets, after Sweden and Baltics we are back to Sweden again with first image from THE CASE five part series which will stream next year on Netflix. Our dear Jakob Oftebro plays clean-cut lead investigator Thomas Berg who hunts a serial killer targeting his fellow police officers. In a desperate move, Thomas turns to his estranged father, Alfred (Peter Andersson), a once-respected but now out-of-favor ex-detective. They must put aside their difficult history to have any chance of catching one of Sweden’s most notorious killers.

UNCHAINED FROM FRANCE

I have two new international period set series for you today, starting with French series UNCHAINED (Enchaines) which will, according to Variety, be presented internationally at this year’s Unifrance Rendez-Vous in Le Havre. It is set in 1806 on Réunion Island in the Indian Ocean, where, in the wake of a deadly cyclone, Charles Bellevue’s plantation lies in ruins. Bankrupted, he’s forced to sell his lands and slaves, who fear being torn apart. Among them, Isaac refuses to accept his fate. He’s just discovered that Charles Bellevue is not merely his master but also his father. Fueled by rage and an insatiable desire for freedom, Isaac persuades Charles to keep the plantation. Impressed by his resolve, Charles appoints him as overseer. Now, Isaac must balance his newfound power with his urge to protect his people. 

 

  THE NEW FORCE FROM SWEDEN

There is also a Swedish period set drama that will be available for streaming over on Netflix from October 3rd. Titled THE NEW FORCE it is set in the year 1958, with Sweden’s first female police officers graduate, a small group of pioneers, taking a big step for gender equality but struggling to take even the smallest step themselves, as the skirts they’re forced to wear chafe like sandpaper against their thighs. They are ridiculed by the public, belittled by the media, and scorned by their colleagues. The new recruits are placed in the country’s most crime-ridden district, the Klara police district in Stockholm, and as they start patrolling the streets of Stockholm, they soon realize that their biggest problem isn’t the criminals - instead, the resistance comes from colleagues and the society as a whole.

Sometime in 2022 your trusted spy has informed you that Scandinavian streamer Viaplay is preparing historical movie STOCKHOLM BLOODBATH and now we have the first trailer since the Mikael Hafstrom directed epic movie has been available for streaming over at the streamer since January 18th. It is Viaplay's second English language film after Lasse Hallstrom's Hilma which is also available on the streamer. Last summer Viaplay had to lay of a quarter of its workforce. Due to their financial trouble they sold about 12% of their shares to French Canal Plus. Prime Video Nordics has recently bought a dozen of their shows scraped for the lack of money. After opting out of shooting expensive high end originals, because of the downfall of their business model, they have also pulled out of UK and USA.

 

  SET IN 1520 THE FILM

explores a dark chapter in Sweden’s history, which saw the infamous massacre of nearly 100 nobles and civilians in the Swedish capital. The film follows Anne (Sophie Cookson) and her foster sister Freja (Alba August) as they seek revenge on the men who murdered their family at Anne’s wedding. Their quest leads them to Stockholm, where they are drawn into a ruthless political struggle between Sweden and Denmark when a group of Swedish aristocrats conspire to overthrow the Danish king Christian II, known by the Swedes as Christian the Tyrant. When the Danish king learns of the nobles' plans, he heads to Stockholm to put an end to the rebellion of the Swedish rebels, under the leadership of the regent Sten Sture. The stuggle culminates in a mass execution of almost 100 Swedes, presided over by King Christian II of Denmark (Claes Bang), known as the Stockholm Bloodbath.

swiftly to Scandinavia, beginning our visit with the land of Sweden from which arrives the first trailer for new period set movie helmed by one of our favourite directors, always brilliant Lasse Hallstrom.

To open in their cinemas October 19th after which it will also be available on their streamer Viaplay, HILMA explores Hilma af Klint's enigmatic life, now recognized as one of the Western world's first abstract artists. The cast led by Lasse's and Lena Olin's daughter Tora Hallstrom, also includes Tom Wlaschiha, Lily Cole and Adam Lundgren. Beside directing and casting his wife and daughter, Lasse also wrote the script.

episode series by Connie Nielsen. The story of this historical drama predominantly focuses on the author's return to Denmark after many years in East Africa. Penniless, sick and divorced, the story depicts her journey from this point to becoming a renowned writer. We met Blixen near ends, economically and emotionally bankrupt after her farm fails and her soulmate, as she calls English aristocrat Denys Finch Hatton, dies in an airplane accident and she is about to commit a suicide. This one comes from Denmark and features scenes in both Danish and English language. The drama was a part of Canneseries main competition this year.
