BEAUTY QUEEN OF JERUSALEM
ARRIVES TO NETFLIX
After scoring success in its home country, Israel's most expensive and ambitious period set series ever THE BEAUTY OF QUEEN OF JERUSALEM will stream on Netflix too. The first season will air in two batches: first ten episodes will air May 20th, the other ten July 29th, and the second season of the series starts shooting this June actually.
BEAUTY QUEEN OF JERUSALEM
set in the early-mid 20th century, is an adaptation of Sarit Yishai-Levi’s bestselling novel of the same name and tells the tragic and passionate history of a family set against the backdrop of the Ottoman Empire, The British Mandate and Israel’s War of Independence. Opening in 1917, the show sheds light on Judeo-Spanish traditions and the history of a fledgling country. Michael Aloni, Hila Saada, Itzik Cohen, Yuval Scharf, Mali Levi lead the cast with newcomer Swell Ariel Or (a rather talentless girl who hardly looks like any kind of queen) in the title role. The series aired in the holy land last June as a daily half hour melodrama shot in Hebrew, English, Ladino and Arabic.

I was planning to abandon Netflix , but this one...I've been dying to see it for such a long time. I guess I'm staying in the dying ship.
ReplyDeleteAt least for a while LOL I did not overly like the trailer, looks a bit cheap and the actresses seem terrible, but I think it will have its audience among the Jewish people around the world.
Deleteit certainly will have an audience in this Jewish cat, especially since it deals with Sephardim. I'll watch anything that features Ladino, I've been trying to teach myself that almost lost language for years. I don't like the trailer, but its old. You have beaten YouTube with your announcement. It's a Hollywood Spy scoop. And yes the Beauty Queen doesn't look like a beauty queen...but it's an Israeli beauty canon, not mine. The show will also have followers among the Shtisel fans, because its lead Michael Aloni plays the beauty queen's dad.
DeleteIt is very difficult to establish who is the parent and who a love interest in the above photos LOL I thought the hunk is her love, but it turns out that is her daddy. He looks maybe 5 years older than that bratty actress. What is Ladino? This is the first time I hear of the language. But I generally find cultures, religions and languages spoken there confusing.
DeleteThe hunk you refer to is Michael Aloni (you should watch Shtisel, he is the protagonist). He plays Gabriel, Luna’s father. Because the story spans thirty years, he ages throughout.
DeleteLadino is the old Spanish language, Jews brought with them after being forced into exile in 1492. The Sephardic communities in the Balkans, Turkey and Morocco preserved it for centuries, but most of those communities are gone, so the language is semi extinct. Once, the purest Ladino was spoken in former Yugoslavia, in a town called Monastir that is now in Macedonia.
I think I have heard of Ladino before, but forgot about it. We had so many linguistics lectures at my college that some of the knowledge disappeared from my overburdened head. Hope Ladino has a nice sound to it.
DeleteI still haven't watched any series from Israel. This one seems quite interesting and a good one to start my first Israeli TV show.
ReplyDeleteI did watch a few of their films, actually I recommend THE CAKEMAKER as it is set both in Israel and in your Germany and has food in it.
DeleteI have never seen a trailer from Israel before, but this one doesn't look that bad. It's not as flashy as some series, but it has an interesting plot.
ReplyDeleteP.S. Did you change your comment box or is Blogger just messing everything up on me these days?!
Blogger gave us all a new comment box and I'm not liking it just as I did not like the old one LOL If your browser is messing with you, try to close the protection on it. In Firefox it is left of the website address.
DeleteI had to get out of Firefox and use Chrome for it to work. Figures Google makes it function well on their own browser.
DeleteFirefox protects us better, but it is annoying when on Blogger, you just have to unclick the protection shields on the left whenever you cannot comment. I'm thinking of moving to Russian browser Yandex which is less annoying and does not mess with the user.
DeleteI actually didn't think the trailer was half bad. You're right, she's not a beauty queen, but she kind of has an interesting look to her that I like. I've been thinking of cutting my hair off and styling it like hers for quite some time now. Maybe when the weather turns scorching, I'll get brave and have it chopped.
ReplyDeleteThat type of hairdo has to be styled like on a daily basis, needs patience and nerves LOL I have friends who wanted that bob haircut or cheek high bob, and they say it looks pretty only in the hairsalon and horrid as soon as you wash it first LOL
DeleteAccording to the novel, Luna Ermosa (in Ladino it means “beautiful moon”) is one arrogant bitch. The ‘Beauty queen” is more of a sarcastic nickname, she never wins any contest. They needed an actress that combined basic attractive looks with the ability to pout like a spoiled brat and display narcissistic bitchiness. This is what they found.
DeleteI love the description lol!
DeleteFits the description.
