'THE GREAT'
HULU PREPARING MINI SERIES ON RUSSIAN EMPRESS CATHERINE
Elle Fanning will be Catherine the Great |
A GERMAN PRINCESS ON THE RUSSIAN IMPERIAL THRONE
As Deadline reports, Catherine, born Princess Sophie of Anhalt
Zerbst, was the daughter of a Prussian general, who was introduced to
the prospective tsar Peter of Holstein Gottorp when she was only 10 as
part of European Royal families’ use of marriages as a tool for
strengthening (and weakening) political ties between countries. Though
she admitted to finding him detestable at first, the two eventually
married after she had turned 16.
Their union was tumultuous, with both rumoured to have extramarital
affairs, and Peter’s temper becoming unbearable. Only six months into
him ascending to the Russian throne, Catherine organized his opponents
to overthrow him to start her successful 34-year rule. He was later on
assassinated.
Nicholas Hoult will play the crazy Tsar Peter |
I love Nicholas Hoult as an actor; Elle Fanning not so much.
ReplyDeleteI share your feelings, Debs
DeleteWell, competition is good, isn't it.
ReplyDeleteI would prefer to see the russian mini series (released, methinks in 2014), but as usual, I'm so behind with things.
Except that Elle can hardly even think of being any kind of even remote competition to Mirren :)
DeleteDezzy is here to help you, Duta, here's the link where you can watch the Russian series online with Eng subs both seasons: https://www.dailymotion.com/user/engsubofrusstuff/1
Thanks a lot. I really appreciate your kind gesture.
DeleteThere are also some other Russian series over at YouTube (whole episodes), like Sofiya (on their mediaeval princess Sofiya Paleologa) but they don't have subtitles, but maybe you speak Russian, I know there are tons of Russian in Israel :)
DeleteSadly, I speak no russian. I'm of romanian descent. In elementary school we studied russian so I remember words and letters , but not beyond that.
DeleteI studied it for six years, but I also forgot most of it. I do still sing in Russian, though :))) And I can recite Pushkin too... can't dance kazachok, though LOL
DeleteI'll probsbly watch both whoever's in them, hope there's not to much lovey dovey shit in them though.
ReplyDeletethere can't be much lovey dovey, Ray, when the wifey kills the hubby and shags one of his soldiers LOL
DeleteI think Elle is cute, but that doesn't mean she can act. What a terrible casting choice for Catherine the Great!
ReplyDeleteI don't like it either, especially since she has given the role to herself, I mean how full of yourself do you have to be? But then again, Catherine really was a daft silly tart when she came to Russia, so maybe it won't be so bad, I don't know, I'm not thrilled. Catherine Zeta Jones will forever be Catherine the Great for me. And Nicholas is way too gorgeous for Peter who was ugly as sin, borderline repulsive.
