Earlier last week, March 27th to be exact, a new historical eight episode series NOVOROSSIYA: POTEMKIN (Новороссия. Потёмкин) started airing over at Russian streamer Kino1TV with Ivan Kolesnikov in the lead role of Prince Grigory Potemkin, and Anna Kovalchuk as the latest actress to portray Empress Catherine II at the small screens. This is the first time that famous general and imperial favourite is given a TV series for himself. The series covers the life of Prince Grigory Potemkin - from his appearance at the court of Elizabeth Petrovna in year 1757 to the tragic death in 1791. The action unfolds during a period of rapid Russian prosperity: the acquisition of Novorussian lands, Black Sea Fleet is created, the cities of Kherson, Sevastopol, Ekaterinoslav are under active construction, where the first warship is launched, Catherine the Great's "Greek project" is launched, and Crimea is annexed. All of this occurs thanks to the support and assistance of Prince Grigory Potemkin, against the backdrop of the secret plot of his personal life – his wedding to Empress Catherine II. The plot is based on two main lines: personal - a secret wedding with an Empress, and the state - the construction of the empire in the south. Watch the trailer below:

The series started airing last night in Russia

While we are waiting for the series on tsar Alexander to arrive to the small screens, the latest one to join the series on Russian imperial rulers, after Catherine the Great and Elizaveta, is a historical series on Alexander's father tsar PAUL titled THE FIRST AND THE LAST which started airing last night, March 23rd on Russian national broadcaster. Denis Vlasenko plays the tittle role in the series done for Russia 1, their national broadcaster. The cast also includes Natalia Surkova, Kirill Kyaro, Alexey Barabash, Vladimir Stekov, Artem Krylov, Alexander Chevychelov, Evgeny Kharitonov, Daria Koñyzheva,Olga Bodrova, Polina Filonenko, Sergey Barkovsky, Vladimir Khrabrov, Daria Ahpova and Mariana Kirsanova. The series on the unloved son of Catherine the Great, who did not manage to form a relationship with him because he was taken from her and raised by her mother in law tsarina Elizaveta, will have twelve episodes in its linear TV premiere this week after already launching on Ivi streamer.

 

 WHAT IS THE STORY OF THE SERIES?

 Paul was called a tyrant and even a madman, but his character and history are much deeper than the mask that his descendants undeservedly bestowedon him. His mother’s alienation, rejection of the court and endless attempts to figure out who and why really killed his father formed a deeply tragic personality. Having become emperor after many years of waiting, Paul sought to get rid of the permissiveness of the nobility and improve the lives of serfsand ordinary soldiers. After many different versions of series on his grandmother, legendary Catherine the Great, we are finally getting a series on ALEXANDER THE FIRST, the emperor of whole Russia and last year  I gave you first images from this sprawling historical saga which director Artyom Nasybulin was shooting over in St. Petersburg, but now I can tell you that as a part of Easter festive celebrations, Russian national broadcaster Russia 1 is ready to start airing the drama from tomorrow evening, April 21st. The show will also be available for streaming on Russian streamer Smotrim and you can check out the trailer

I have heard that more than 4,000 costumes were used in the series. During the massive production of this high profile series the actors had to learn how to ride, use weapons and play the violin.

by his babushka, Empress Catherine II, who saw in her eldest grandson the direct heir to the throne, and the European teacher La Harpe, Alexander adheres to liberal views and admires the first years of Napoleon's reign: he dreams that Russia will someday have a republic. After the death of Catherine, during the reign of Paul, Alexander continued to hope for reforms. However, he is soon overcome by disappointment in Paul both as a father and as a statesman. As a result of the conspiracy, Emperor Paul the First dies, and Alexander, haunted by guilt for the death of his father, is forced to ascend the throne to confront the new intrigues of the aristocrats and his overbearing mother. At the same time, Alexander understands that a threat looms over Russia: war with the invincible Napoleon is inevitable, it’s only a matter of time. After high end documentary movies which mix documentary narrative with live action scenes from franchise that includes Peter I: The First and the Last and Empresses and Catherine the Great, the fourth movie has started filming and it will deal with ALEXANDER I played by Sergei Goroshko. Catherine II always knew that her successor would not be her son Pavel (Vitaliy Kishenko), but her beloved grandson Alexander. From his earliest years, he was raised as a future ruler - in strict discipline and with a brilliant education. Having finally become emperor, Alexander intended to continue the reforms of his predecessors - to abolish serfdom and introduce a constitution. But at the beginning of the 19th century, a war broke out between two great empires - France and Russia. Alexander will have to go through a thorny path from brilliant reforms to the Patriotic War. We have seen a number of films and shows on the Russian tsarina, but now February 20th is bringing CATHERINE THE GREAT (Екатерина Великая) lavish high end documentary movie which mixes documentary narrative with live action scenes into Russian cinemas as the continuation of the documentary franchise that includes Peter I: The First and the Last and Empresses. Directed by famous Andrey Kravchuk, it sees Anna Mikhalkova, Olga Lerman, who play the older and younger Catherine, and Victor Dobronravov in the lead roles.

WHAT IS THE STORY OF THE NEW MOVIE?

After the era of palace coups, a new bright historical figure will appear - Catherine II. Like many, she could limit herself to the title of the emperor’s wife, but with her perseverance and determination, Catherine was able to prove that her place was on the throne. At the age of 14, she learned that she was to become the bride of Peter III and the mother of the future heir. These statuses did not worry Catherine much; her cherished dream was to rule: she saw the potential of the Russian Empire and wanted to embody the ideas of enlightenment in it. Are Catherine's ideals destined to become reality? And will her ideas turn against her?

Russian streamer Premier has announced work and casting for their new period set series THE LADY DUELISTS (Дуэлянтки) with Philip Yankovsky, Alevtina Tukan, Alexander Golubev, Evgeniy Shvarts in the cast. In the center of the plot is Empress Catherine the Great herself, who is trying to settle on the throne. Peter III forces Catherine to sign a renunciation, but the document disappears, and everyone around - both friends and enemies - begins a search in their own interests. At the same time, a circle of like-minded women begins to form around the empress, who are united by participating in duels and escaping punishment for this.
