First look at Tom Sharp as Merlin

After announcing Tom Sharp as the lead star of their new seven part epic TV series THE PENDRAGON CYCLE based on Stephen Lawhead's fantasy books, Daily Wire has revealed the rest of the cast as well and now we have the first images of all the major characters that will feature in this Arthurian series. With Sharp as Merlin, Brett Cooper will play Ganieda, the future wife of Merlin. Rose Reid will play the female lead character, Charis The Lady of the Lake, while James Arden will portray Taliesin, Also starring in the drama will be Myles Clohessy as king Uther, Finney Cassidy as Aurellius, Alex Laurence Phillips as Pelleas, Flo Thompstone, Emree Franklin as Morgain, Duran Fulton Brown as Elphin, Daniel Considine, Bertie Newman, George Prentice, and Alex Arco as Meurig. Shot in Italy and Hungary the series will stream on Daily Wire probably in Autumn and as you can judge from the photos it will feature lavish Lord of the Rings style costumes, all in all looks very promising so far. The series is currently shooting in Hungary for a 2024 release.

Although Ridley Scott was supposed to return to the medieval world after his Last Duel (which is currently proving to be a major flop in cinemas most probably for the worst casting the world has even seen outside the latest Dune snoozefest) he will be replaced by Michael Matthews (Love and Monsters) as Disney has hired him to helm their MERLIN movie, based on T. A. Barron's book series.  As Deadline reports, the film, which is in very early stages of production, will follow the origin story of a young Merlin who would go on to become the mentor of the classic literary character King Arthur.

As you already know Disney is doing a lot of live action remakes of their famous animated classics and one of them is also SWORD IN THE STONE which has just found its director in Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later)! The 1963 animated hit was, as 'The Hollywood Reporter' writes, the final movie released by the studio before Walt Disney’s death!

The movie takes a light hearted view of the famous mediaeval legend of King Arthur, focusing on the young Arthur being mentored by the magician Merlin. This is not to be confused with another Disney's project on the same topic The Merlin Saga which might be helmed by Ridley Scott. That one follows young Merlin. Is generally grim and dark Fresnadillo the right director for this job?

Meanwhile, 'Variety' reports that Ridley Scott is in talks to direct Disney's THE MERLIN SAGA which is eyed as a possible franchise based on 12 books from T.A. Barron which he started publishing back in 1996! He would also produce it with Lord of the Rings' and Hobbit's Philippa Boyens writing the script! Similar to the popular BBC series from a decade ago, THE MERLIN SAGA depicts the origin story of a young wizzard Merlin who would go on to become the mentor of the classic literary character of King Arthur. It is even more interesting that Disney is preparing another movie from this universe - a live action version of SWORD IN THE STONE which Ridley could also produce.
