JIM SHERIDAN TO HELM 18TH CENTURY SET EPIC MOVIE ADAPTATION OF MARGUERITE HENRY'S NOVEL KING OF THE WIND

   KING OF THE WIND
PERIOD SET MOVIE ADAPTATION
Jim Sheridan will helm the adaptation
Six time Academy Award nominee Jim Sheridan is set to direct a big screen adaptation of Marguerite Henry's novel KING OF THE WIND as a historical drama about an 18th century Arabian colt that would go on to sire the modern thoroughbred bloodline. As Variety reports, the film retraces the path of the so-called Darley stallion from the stables of the Moroccan sultan through to the courts of England and France. The Irish director plans to shoot the project in the Middle East and North Africa, promising a unique slant tied to the underexplored perspective of the horse itself. He said he will try to make the animal as human as possible.

    1. I do not think so, this is a very renowned European director, not some Hollywood nincompoop.

  2. Probably not one for me, but I have a friend that loves all things horses so she'll be interested in this, I'm sure.

    1. It will be very touching, methinks, because at some point he had to draw wagons as well, poor horsey.

  3. I think I like this part, as I know so much more about these matters now, than when I re-read and re-read the novel as a kid: "As Variety reports, the film retraces the path of the so-called Darley stallion from THE STABLES OF THE MOROCCAN SULTAN."

There were stables of the Moroccan sultan that had 7,000 horses. These were his personal animals, not those horses on which he mounted his (enslaved) military, or the ancillary horses for work in and round the stables, draft animals, etc.

I don't feel good about this part. "... he's promising a unique slant tied to the underexplored perspective of the horse itself. He [Sheridan] said he will try to make the animal as human as possible.

    1. He probably means to give the horse some warmth as a character, he did say he is very excited to do it.

  4. It could be interesting. I saw an exhibition in The British Museum about the three Foundation Stallions, the Byerley Turk, the Godolphin Arabian (subject of the film) and The Darley Arabian some years ago. I'm not a horse woman but I read the My Friend Flicka and the Golden Stallion books when I was younger. I liked Anna Sewell's Black Beauty ... though it was very sad in parts.
