There were a couple of gay themed movies at Cannes this year, among them was THE HISTORY OF SOUND  with gay icons Josh O'Connor and Paul Mescal as two young men during World War I who set out to record the lives, voices and music of their American countrymen. First trailer has been released for the drama that is out this September. In this snatched, short-lived moment in their young lives, and while discovering the epic sweep of the U.S., both men are deeply changed. This historical romantic drama film,directed by Oliver Hermanus is based on the short story of the same name by Ben Shattuck. Some critics have called it moving and tasteful in the reviews from Cannes.

PILLION WITH ALEXANDER SKARSGARD

Then there is something that contains, as far as I have heard tons of extreme graphic sex and Alexander Skarsgard has said their shooting was very intense. Fun and filthy romance with heart PILLION follows Colin (Harry Melling), a weedy wallflower letting life pass him by. That is until Ray (Skarsgård), the impossibly handsome leader of a motorbike club, takes him on as his submissive. Ray uproots Colin from his dreary suburban life, introducing him to a community of kinky, queer bikers and taking all sorts of virginities along the way. But as Colin steps deeper into Ray’s world of rules and mysteries, he begins to question whether the life of a 24/7 submissive is for him. 

PLAINCLOTHES WITH RUSSELL TOVEY

This one did not hit Cannes, but gay romantic drama PLAINCLOTHES is also arriving this year.  Russell Tovey and Tom Blyth have been set as leads in the indie movie from Carmen Emmi who directed this story which she also wrote. Set in the ’90s and inspired by true events, it follows a working-class undercover officer who is tasked with entrapping and apprehending gay men, only to find himself drawn to one of his targets.

Sky has released a dramatic movie trailer for their historical biopic LEE in which Kate Winslet plays a model who became a war photographer. It will hit cinemas in September. Andy Samberg plays Life Magazine photographer David E. Scherman, Alexander Skarsgård is English Surrealist painter, photographer, poet and biographer Roland Penrose, Marion Cotillard is Solange D’Ayen, the fashion director of French Vogue and close friend of Miller’s, while Josh O’Connor is Tony, a young journalist who interviews Lee. Josh O'Connor is already learning Italian

After leading God's Own Country, inarguably the best gay film ever,  Josh O'Connor is set to lead Luca Guadagnino's SEPARATE ROOMS adaptation of Pier Vittorio Tondelli's novel. He will play 30-something Leo who travels across Milan, Paris, London and Florence, while Thomas is a young Berlin-based pianist who is temporarily living in Paris when he first intersects with Leo.  After meeting in Paris, the lovers begin a long affair, meeting and traveling together in different European cities over a three-year period. The two meet when they wish, but live separately, secluding themselves in their respective loneliness, though they
often write each other. At one point, Thomas starts an affair with a girl, which makes Leo deeply jealous. Then Thomas is diagnosed with an illness that will lead to his death in his hometown of Munich.

Well, it has been a very, very long wait, but BBC has finally published first images from their new Western series THE ENGLISH with Emily Blunt in the lead role. Given that it will air in November on BBC Two not One, might it mean it is not good when they moved it to their less watched channel especially given the fact that we waited for years for it to arrive after being announced first? Well let us hope not. Emily Blunt stars in this six episode series as Lady Cornelia Locke and Chaske Spencer as Pawnee ex-cavalry scout Eli Whipp in high-octane western which will also stream on Prime Video in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The series’ acclaimed ensemble cast includes Stephen Rea, Valerie Pachner, Rafe Spall, Tom Hughes, Toby Jones and Ciarán Hinds!

 

   THE ENGLISH TAKES

Set in 2006, the Sky film follows a 16-year-old who believes he is a future star musician, even when no-one else in his small town does.
