After Richard Armitage who was the lead in the first season, Martin Compston takes over the second season of RED EYE series with Jing Lusi back in the high conspiracy drama which returns January 1st on ITVX. Inside the US Embassy, the celebrations for a newly-appointed Ambassador to London are shattered when a call threatening to blow a British plane out of the sky if anyone leaves triggers an immediate embassy lockdown and traps guests and staff inside. That’s when the murders begin, landing Hana Li, as a British cop, in a political and jurisdictional nightmare. Compelled to join forces with the Head of Embassy Security, Clay Brody, a former colleague who once screwed her over, Hana has to see her way past her distrust of him and focus on the investigation.

January will lack much excitement. One of the very few new shows to hit the small screens this month is OUT THERE six part thriller opening at ITV January 19th (2nd episode on the 20th) with Martin Clunes in the lead role.

depicts the surreptitious invasion of the land our farmer cherishes, with devastating consequences, as his livelihood, homestead and family life are threatened by local county lines drugs dealers: urban gangs using the British countryside as a field of operations, moving drugs and money between their inner-city hubs and provincial areas. Martin Clunes plays Nathan Williams, a man who runs a farm which has been in his family for generations, caught in a numbing rhythm of work and grief following the death of his wife, Sabine, two years previously. A single parent to teenager Johnny (Louis Ashbourne Serkis), Nathan is uniquely placed and possesses enough pent-up energy to take on the gangs that threaten to engulf his son. Consequently, he embarks on a personal journey that will take him ever further out of his comfort zone into a dark alternative world as he fights to protect his family, his homestead and his legacy. He’s missed all the clues that the country idyll around him has been fatally compromised, contaminated by waves of criminality spreading and mutating virus-like from the city. Now Nathan must accept that the rustic atmosphere of his childhood is long gone, replaced by something altogether more perilous. And the only way for Nathan to survive in this brave new world is to learn the rules and fight back.

A trailer is here for Canadian and Norwegian series SO LONG, MARIANNE that tells the legendary love story of Canadian singer and poet Leonard Cohen (Alex Wolff), and his muse Marianne Ihlen (Thea Sofie Loch Næss) who inspired the titular song. It’s an intimate tale of two lonely people falling in love during a period of their life when they are trying to figure out who they are and their place in the world, while one is becoming one of the most famous singers of all time. Anna Torv, Noah Taylor and Peter Stormare also star. Ben Lloyd Hughes plays Allen Ginsberg.  It starts on ARD in Germany September 22nd and then on Canadian streamer Crave September 27th and will also be on ITVX in UK.

 

THEIR STORY 

 crosses the world, travelling from Norway to Greece, New York and Montreal, with the majority of the series filmed on the picturesque Greek island of Hydra where they lived during the 1960s. There, they joined legendary Australian novelists Charmian Clift and her husband George Johnston, the matriarch and patriarch of a bohemian group of writers, artists, poets, and outcasts who were exploring a new world of free love, drugs, and artistic freedom, but also experiencing the rivalries and jealousy that accompanied their intense, interwoven lives.

ITVX has released first trailer from their surprising comedy series DOUGLAS IS CANCELLED which focuses on the cancel culture. Hugh Bonneville plays a middle aged and widely-respected news anchor called Douglas Bellowes while Karen Gillan stars as his canny sidekick Madeline. Ben Miles, Alex Kingston and Simon Russell Beale also star. The four part series will hit ITV and ITVX later this month.

Over at London TV Screenings Irish broadcaster RTE will be presenting a four hour drama based on the novel by Karen Perry THE BOY THAT NEVER WAS starring Colin Morgan and Toni O'Rourke with Kerr Logan and Simon Callow also in the cast. In Dublin, Harry thinks he glimpses in a crowd a six-year-old boy who he’s convinced is his son Dillon, disappeared in an earthquake in Morocco three years before. His obsession tears apart his marriage, exposing shameful secrets.

Also joining London TV Screenings is new thriller TV series RED EYE which will stream on ITVX. In this action-packed thriller, Jing Lusi stars in the role of police officer Hana Li who escorts Dr. Matthew Nolan (Richard Armitage) when he is renditioned to China from the U.K. When inexplicable deaths occur onboard the red eye flight raise, Li forms an unlikely alliance with Head of MI5 Madeleine Delaney and journalist Jess Li, her sister, to uncover a wider global conspiracy. 

FROM BBC'S LOST BOYS AND FAIRIES

British broadcaster will, meanwhile, present their new gay TV series LOST BOYS AND FAIRIES. Set in Cardiff, this tender, and possibly tear-jerking, drama shows a longtime gay couple, happy with their life and finally getting ready to adopt a child. Or so they think, as this big step will force at least one of them – seemingly fearless drag artist Gabriel (Sion Daniel Young) – to revisit painful memories that marked his childhood following his mother’s passing. The very same ones he already tried his best to forget. Fra Fee takes the other male lead as Andy!

While this is already available for streaming as of this month over at ITVX for viewers in United Kingdom, it will hit Northern American audience March 17th when the three episode mini series NOLLY will start airing on PBS. If I got it right it will also stream on Foxtel in Australia and it had its linear UK premiere on ITV during New Year holidays. Created by Russell T. Davies, this series is exploring the reign, and fall from grace, of the inimitable British soap star, Noele Gordon played by Helena Bonham Carter. The cast also includes Max Brown, Mark Gattis, and Augustus Prew.

 NOLLY MINI TV SERIES TELLS THE STORY OF 

Noele (Helena Bonham Carter) who was a legend in her own lifetime. As flame-haired widow Meg Richardson in the long-running soap opera Crossroads, she was one of the most famous people in Britain. Then in 1981, at the height of the show’s success and the peak of Nolly’s fame, she was axed without ceremony, without warning and with no explanation. With the boss’s words “all good things must come to an end” ringing in her ears, Noele Gordon found herself thrown out of the show that was her life for over 18 years. (his real name was Archibald) will start with his birth in Bristol in 1904 and tell the story of a troubled childhood spent in extreme poverty, dealing with his father’s adultery and the loss of older brother John. At 14, he joined music hall act the Bob Pender Troupe and moved to the U.S. and, soon after, Cary Grant was born. The show will intercut scenes from 1961 when, at the height of his fame, Grant was desperately unhappy in his private life after two failed marriages. Grant then began wooing TV star Dyan Cannon, who was 30 years his junior and didn’t immediately fall for his charms. He married her in 1965 and retired from film acting one year later. The series tells how extreme poverty, his father’s adultery and the loss of his older brother, John, tore the family apart and sent his loving mother into a downward spiral of grief and depression. The script also reveals how deceit, cruelty and one, overpowering lie shaped Archie’s life. Harriet Walter stars as Grant’s mother with Henry Lloyd Hughes also in the cast. Laura Aikman stars as Cary’s ex-wife Dyan Cannon, Dainton Anderson, Calam Lynch and Oaklee Pendergast as young versions of Archie and Kara Tointon, Ian Pulston-Davies, Ian McNeice, Jason Watkins, Lisa Faulkner and Niamh Cusack are also in.

We are going British today, starting with the first images from THE LONG SHADOW true crime drama which is coming to ITV and ITVX next month! The seven part series depicts the desperate five-year hunt for serial killer Peter Sutcliffe, sensitively focussing on the lives of the victims who crossed his path and those of the officers at the heart of the police investigation. With the victims, their families and the survivors at the heart of this series, we get a new perspective to a well-documented story. Meticulously researched and drawing upon the most extensive archive of the investigation, comprising of hundreds of case files, interview transcripts and police reports, the series stars Toby Jones as DCS Dennis Hoban, who initially led the enquiry, with David Morrissey taking the role of DCS George Oldfield, who famously took on the investigation. Lee Ingleby is DCS Jim Hobson, whilst Katherine Kelly plays Emily Jackson with Daniel Mays as her husband, Sydney Jackson. Jill Halfpenny plays Doreen Hill, with Shaun Dooley as DCS Chris Gregg.
