TO PLAY MAGELLAN IN  A NEW MOVIE

With an aim to possibly premiere it at Cannes, Lav Diaz is preparing a historical movie MAGELLAN on 16th Century Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan to be played by Gael Garcia Bernal. Originally titled Beatriz, The Wife, the film was inspired by the life of Magellan’s wife Beatriz Barbosa de Magallanes. They married in 1517, living together for just two years before Magellan set off on an expedition to southeast Asia, from which he would never return. As Deadline reports, the new, two and a half hour long version will focus more on the explorer and his travels and less on his wife.

A bit more than a year ago the spy informed you that Amazon and director Simon West are preparing BOUNDLESS epic TV adventure series

and now they've announced Rodrigo Santoro and Alvaro Morte as leads in the roles of famous explorers Magellan and Elcano! This four part series, telling the story of Juan Sebastián Elcano and Ferdinand Magellan’s epic voyage around the world after they set sail from Spain 500 years ago, will also star Sergio Peris Mencheta (Captain Cartagena), Adrian Lastra (Captain Mendoza), Carlos Cuevas (Martino), Pepon Nieto (Father Bartolomé), Raul Tejon (Gómez de Espinosa), Goncalo Diniz (Duarte Barbosa), Manuel Moron (Cardenal Fonseca) and Barbara Goenaga (Beatriz). To start shooting this month in Spain and Dominican Republic, the series will have two of the original ships

Alvaro Morte will be Juan Sebastian Elcano in the new series

rebuilt to scale and a replica of the only surviving ship used in the production. Spanish national television is co producing the project. Speaking of epic series, in other news from the genre: Romulus has been renewed for season 2 and Warrior is getting the third season but on HBO Max instead Cinemax.

As Deadline reports today, Amazon has hired Simon West to direct new historical mini series BOUNDLESS about two 16th century explorers who set out to disprove the theory that the world is flat. Told in four episodes, it will be a story about Juan Sebastián Elcano and Ferdinand Magellan’s epic voyage around the world after they set sail from Spain 500 years ago. With Spain's national television as co-producer, the series, shooting this summer, will air next year on Amazon Prime. Last year, Spain had a rather beautiful animated feature Elcano and Magellan: The First Voyage Around the World which was strongly criticised in certain parts of the world for glamorizing the tyrannical colonizers.
