BBC ANNOUNCES NEW TV ADAPTATION

Among the twelve rather uninspired new shows announced yesterday at BBC the only one that caught my little spy eye was THE MINISTRY OF TIME a six part series based on Kaliane Bradley's novel about a newly established government department, which is gathering ‘expats’ from across history in an experiment to test the viability of time-travel. Gore (an officer on Sir John Franklin's doomed 1845 Arctic expedition) is one such figure rescued from certain death, alongside an army captain from the fields of the Somme, a plague victim from the 1600s, a widow from revolutionary France, and a soldier from the seventeenth century. They are placed with 21st century liaisons, known as 'bridges', in unlikely flatshares. Gore has to learn about contemporary life from scratch: from air travel to industrial warfare, from cinema to indoor plumbing; and he must negotiate cohabiting with the ambitious modern woman who works as his bridge. After an awkward beginning, the pair start to find pleasure and comfort in each other’s company, developing a relationship that is simultaneously tender, intense and profoundly unprofessional; and the expats, adrift in a new era, form friendships that ground and support them in the lonely 21st century, where they have outlived everyone they ever knew and loved. When a deeper conspiracy at the Ministry begins to reveal itself, the bridge must reckon with what she does next. Will she save or sacrifice the exiled misfits she has come to care for so deeply?

Iervolino and Lady Bacardi Entertainment are set to turn Marguerite Yourcenar's famous novel MEMOIRS OF HARDIAN into a historical TV series on the famous Roman emperor. From childhood, the life of a profound and sensitive man, aware of his imperial role and the burden he carries, is told. A wise and far-sighted diplomat and a human being marked by splendors and fears, Hadrian defended his immense love for the arts to cover the shame caused by the emptiness of his youth. And then his passions: a natural and complete bisexuality that was also controversial and self-centered. The sorrows and tragedies, feelings of deep friendship and respect for humanity. All these themes will be explored in the series, offering an intimate look at the emperor’s complex psychology and his lasting impact on European history and culture

Storming alien planets as an intergalactic gang leader is defo not what you would imagine for Cate Blanchett but that is exactly what she does in first BORDERLANDS sf movie trailer for the video game adaptation that will hit the big screens August 9th!

It follows Lilith (Blanchett), an infamous outlaw with a mysterious past, who reluctantly returns to her home planet of Pandora to find the missing daughter of the universe’s most powerful S.O.B., Atlas (Edgar Ramirez). Lilith forms an alliance with an unexpected team – Roland (Kevin Hart), a former elite mercenary, now desperate for redemption; Tiny Tina (Ariana Greenblatt), a feral pre-teen demolitionist; Tina’s musclebound, rhetorically challenged protector, Krieg (Florian Munteanu); Tannis (Jamie Lee Curtis), the scientist with a tenuous grip on sanity; and Claptrap, a persistently wiseass robot. These unlikely heroes must then battle alien monsters and dangerous bandits to find and protect the missing girl, who may hold the key to unimaginable power.

It is quite a stellar cast that writer and director James Vanderbilt has gathered for his World War II trials movie drama NUREMBERG. Colin Hanks and Mark O'Brien are the latest to join the cast that already has Russell Crowe, Rami Malek, Michael Shannon, Richard E. Grant, Leo Woodall, John Slattery, Lydia Peckham, Wrenn Schmidt, Lotte Verbeek and Andreas Pietschmann. O’Brien will play Colonel John Amen, one of the chief interrogators at the trial, while Hanks will play Dr. Gustav Gilbert, a military psychiatrist assigned to evaluate the Nazis in the film that chronicles the eponymous trials held between 1945 and 1946 by the Allies against the defeated Nazi regime.

Well, that is quite a hot tandem, isn't? Only they are not a tandem but enemies in 5LBS OF PRESSURE action movie for which I have a trailer today. Both written and directed by Phil Allocco it should hit cinemas March 8th! Rory Culkin also stars. 

 

5LBS OF PRESSURE 

follows Adam (Luke Evans) who, fresh out of prison after serving time for murder, returns to his old stomping grounds to seek out a son (Rudy Pankow) who doesn't know him. Eli (Zac Adams), the brother of the man he killed is looking for revenge. There is also Mike (Rory Culkin), who is trying to escape a life of crime living under the thumb of his gangster Uncle Leff (Alex Pettyfer). ITV has released first images from their upcoming four part series A CRUEL LOVE: THE RUTH ELLIS STORY with Lucy Boynton as the last woman hanged in UK. Laurie Davidson, Toby Jones, Toby Stephens, Mark Stanley, Joe Armstrong and Arthur Darvill complete the stellar cast of the series set in 1955 in the glamorous and intoxicating world of London club-land. Ellis was the capital’s youngest club manager but her success soon unraveled as she became entwined in a relationship with racing driver David Blakely and then fell into a love triangle. On trial for his murder, she was condemned to hang and she became the last woman to be hanged in Britain.

But their future is thrown into limbo when she interviews for an executive chef position in her hometown of Quebec City. To Gordon's dismay her future boss also happens to be her former lover, a celebrity Chef with oceanic eyes and a hit TV show. Good luck Gordon. NEW APPLE TV PLUS SF SERIES

Last week we saw the return of comedy hour with new seasons of beloved sitcoms over at CBS and then the launch of The New Look Dior and Chanel series

Constellation starts next Wednesday

at Apple TV Plus, but beside The Way, which starts tomorrow on BBC, next week is only bringing us CONSTE- LLATION over at Apple. New sf series will be available for streaming from February 21st with first three episodes starring Noomi Rapace and James D'Arcy.

First up today, an image from Peter Glantz directed movie SAVAGE HOUSE set against the backdrop of 18th century England, a massive pox outbreak, and Jacobite uprising – it is a darkly satirical story of Sir Chauncey Savage (Richard E. Grant) and Lady Savage (Claire Foy) and their blindpursuit of a better life. It is not without a tinge of irony that their family name is the Savages, for this is a Savage House indeed. Filled with duels, decadence, and bloodshed, this is a madcap play on class and power. Bel Powley, Jack Farthing, Pip Torrens also star.

Meanwhile, from Italy comes Daniela Porto and Cristiano Bortone directed MY PLACE IS HERE set in the aftermath of WWII against the conservative backdrop of Southern Italy, just as Italian women have gained the right to vote. When single mother Marta (Ludovica Martino) accepts the proposal of an older farmer, she meets Lorenzo, the village’s openly gay wedding planner (Marco Leonardi) and forges an unlikely friendship with him. Lorenzo introduces her to a hidden community of gays, sparking Marta to challenge societal prejudices.
