If you are in love with German actor Louis Hofmann like we have been for years, you will be happy to hear that his new moving drama film 23000 LIVES will be available for streaming on Netflix from July 17th! Inspired by the true story of the NGO Jugend Rettet, this drama follows a group of young people who no longer want to stand by and watch as countless refugees die in the Mediterranean on their way to Europe. With no experience in sea rescue, they launch a crowdfunding campaign, buy an old fishing vessel, and go on to save the lives of more than 23,000 people. Oscar winning Hungarian director Istvan Szabo has released first images with Ralph Fiennes and Viggo Mortensen in his new movie EMBERS which also includes Charlotte Rampling, our dear Louis Hofmann, Gijs Blom and Katherine Langford whom you can also see in another image. Based on Sandor Marai's novel the film is a psychological duel which reconnects once inseparable friends, Henrik (Fiennes) and Konrad (Mortensen), decades after Konrad’s mysterious disappearance and uncovers over the course of one evening the secret that tore them apart and the woman at the center of it. The film is now in production.

 Back in the summer of 2024 your trusted spy had showed you first images from Will Seefried's period set drama LILIES NOT FOR ME and today I have the first trailer for you from the movie which should open in cinemas April 30th. 

 

Rings of Power Elrond star Robert Aramayo and Fionn O'Shea play a 1920's gay novelist and his psychiatric nurse who bond over a series of doctor-ordered 'dates' as he tells the story of a friendship which spiraled out of control when they turned to a risky procedure to cure themselves of feelings for each other. Our dearest German superstar Louis Hofmann also stars in the film which had its world premiere at last year's Edinburgh Film Festival. The movie was a co production  between United Kingdom, United States, France and South Africa.

Screen Daily has published first image from Guillaume Nicloux’s romantic biopic THE DIVINE SARAH BERNHARDT about the life of the legendary French stage actress played by Sandrine Kiberlain! She was born in 1844 and considered to be the world’s first celebrity and nicknamed “La Divine”, shattering societal norms with her audacious personality and acting performances. Laurent Laffite and Amira Casar also star in the film that will have a festival premiere in France this August and has been sold around Europe.

This time it will be the story of the pilots who had to become masters of the air in order to defeat the enemy planes. Produced again by Steven Spielberg the series will launch January 26th opening the TV season of the new 2024 with two episodes with the rest  of the nine part season streaming weekly till mid March! Some were shot down and captured; some were wounded or killed. And some were lucky enough to make it home. Regardless of individual fate, a toll was exacted on them all. Louis Hofmann leads the series cast

Louis Hofmann. The four episode series based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel is directed by Shawn Levy and also stars Mark Ruffalo and Hugh Laurie. 

 

  THE STORY FOLLOWS 

Mark Ruffalo's Daniel LeBlanc, who flees Nazi occupied Paris with his blind daughter Marie-Laure in tow. They hide out with an eccentric uncle played by Hugh Laurie, and Marie-Laure (Aria Mia Loberti) grows up to become an underground radio broadcaster, using her words to fight the incoming Nazi empire. Her words capture the attention of German teenager Werner (Louis Hofmann), who shares Marie-Laure’s hope for a brighter future. His knowledge of radio frequencies gets him enlisted by Hitler’s regime to track down illegal broadcasts. Through Marie-Laure’s secret radio broadcasts, Werner holds onto hope as a means of survival during World War II. Lars Eidinger plays Reinhold von Rumpel, ruthless Nazi leader who is after Marie-Laure and her father, and he won’t stop until he gets his hands on a prized jewel that she is hiding.

We are still at MipTV at Cannes, today with the news that  France’s Oble is offering to the international buyers, a four part series THE PLAGUE, a modern adaptation of Albert Camus’ novel! Although the story in the book is set in the 1940s, the miniseries is set in 2029 in a society still recovering from the waves of COVID epidemics and that is now facing a much deadlier plague. Hugo Becker will lead the cast with Frederic Pierrot and Sofia Essaidi and the shooting starts today in France.

around the world, is preparing THE YOUNG POE English language series with an international cast. Based on Cuca Canals novels, it imagines Poe as a precocious, irrepressible, neurotic and highly Gothic 11 or 12 year-old in 1820 Boston, grounding in true events of Poe’s childhood the extraordinarily analytical and morbid mind which Edgar Allen Poe brings to his fiction! In the series, the young Poe sparks the interest of the local police through his precocious capacity to solve murder mysteries. He ends up becoming a faithful assistant to Boston’s Inspector Auguste Dupin, a kindred soul.

Also arriving sometime this year is MASTERS OF THE AIR series produced by Steven Spielberg, in which he plays an American bomber pilot together with Callum Turner and a massive cast with hundreds of actors. Before all of this, Louis stole our hearts in beautiful coming of age movie CENTRE OF MY WORLD in which he had beautifully graphic gay action with Sisi's emperor Franz Jannick Schumann.

Then we also watched him in period set horror series 1899 that Netflix has recently cancelled and in which he played Lucien. Currently, if you are in USA you are watching his truly delightful work as the Austrian emperor Joseph in the PBS Masterpiece MARIE ANTOINETTE saga where, beside ruling Austria with his mother Maria Theresa, he is also the brother of the stubborn and daft queen of France.

National Geographics has released a trailer for new eight part mini series A SMALL LIGHT which arrives May 1st with episodes on Nat Geo weekly

Series starts May 1st on Nat Geo

and full series streaming on Disney and Hulu. It follows the story of 20-something secretary Miep Gies (Bel Powley), who didn’t hesitate when her boss Otto Frank (Liev Schreiber) asked her to hide him and his family from the Nazis during World War II. For the next two years, Miep, her husband Jan (Joe Cole) and several other everyday heroes watched over the eight souls hiding in the secret annex. It was Miep who found Anne’s (Billie Boullet) diary and preserved it so that she and Otto could later share it with the world. The series title comes from something Gies said late in her life: “I don’t like being called a hero because no one should ever think you have to be special to help others. Even an ordinary secretary or a housewife or a teenager can turn on a small light in a dark room.”

Since the best hiding spots are in plain sight, Cioma decides to go out into the light to escape deportation. Using the identity of a marine officer he created for himself, he throws himself into the city's nightlife and even finds a fragile hope for love during the darkest moments of the war. Throughout the day he forges IDs with just a brush, some ink and a steady hand - and saves the lives of many others. His talent puts him in more and more danger, though, and at some point Cioma's only hope to survive is a last forged ID - with his own name on it. Kino Lorber will soon release it in USA as well.
