CALL ME LEVI SERIES
ON THE INVENTOR OF FAMOUS JEANS
Today I will turn your attention to a series that already aired in Europe two years ago, but is currently available also on Walter Presents on PBS Masterpiece channel over at Prime Video so you can catch it even if you
are in Northern America or Canada. The four episode period set series CALL ME LEVI spans the 1840s to the 1870s: from Europe's failed revolutions in 1848, which triggered waves of emigration to the New World, to the gold rush in California and the American Civil War, to the "Gilded Age" of the US economy. Whether fortune hunters or Hollywood stars, whether workers or intellectuals - everyone wears blue jeans. Hardly any other item of clothing is so iconographically representative of the myth of America. Director Neele Leana Vollmar tells the amazing story of the invention of jeans in the four-part event series with
Vincent Redetzki as the Franconian fabric merchant Levi Strauss and Anton von Lucke in the role of the Latvian tailor Jacob Davis. They play two
immigrants who realize their "American dream" in wild times and despite adverse circumstances. Their patent for denim trousers reinforced with rivets
from 1873 laid the foundation for an unprecedented success story: Today, 250 million of the world's most worn trousers are produced every year. "Levis" is one of the best-known brand names and enjoys cult status.

It's fascinating to me how Levi's have stood the test of time for such a simple article of clothing. We see jean companies come and go, but I feel like Levi's will always be a mainstream brand for the masses. They are comfy and affordable, but stylish enough that they appeal to those with and without a lot of money.

DeleteI have never had a pair of Levis jeans, either. Nor have I had a pair of Lee's (if I recall another designer label accurately).
ReplyDeleteI do wear jeans occasionally, but I prefer the stretch ones. And to be honest, with the cost of living as high and ridiculous as it has been, I love thrift stores. And I am not alone!
We all love cheap stores, here we even buy food in cheap Russian supermarket which has prices two times lower than the European ones, so I buy my millet, lentils, beans and other stuff there once a month.

DeleteThe WIFi behaved long enough to let me watch the first episode in Amazon Prime. Really cute although a lot of historical license taking. The one true items, Levy and Jacob went into partnership during the Gilded Age and so we now have jeans. ohh and Strauss had a sister called Fanny who married David Stern and her descendants own Levi Strauss today.
