OFFICIAL TRAILER AND CHARACTER POSTERS FOR ONE OF EUROPE'S MOST EPIC SERIES EVER RISE OF THE RAVEN DEPICTING THE 15TH CENTURY BATTLE OF BELGRADE

  RISE OF THE RAVEN
OFFICIAL EPIC SERIES TRAILER IS HERE!
The series will be offered to broadcasters next week
Beta has announced that one of  the most epic European productions of all times, historical series RISE OF TH RAVEN will have its world premiere October 22nd at this year's Mipcom in Cannes, which is just in two days, and to celebrate it they have released a long trailer too and a series of character posters! The series will air next year. So far, we know it will air on TV2 in Hungary and Slovenia and ORF in Austria. I will inform you as soon as we hear news of other international broadcasters or a possible big streamer. In the meantime you can check out the new trailer below the post and tell us what you think.

THIS TEN PART SERIES EPIC TV SERIES
depicts the extraordinary real-life feat of Hungarian army commander Janos Hunyadi (Gellért L. Kádár), who turned back the tide of the Ottoman Empire’s seemingly unstoppable advance into Europe when back in 1456 he won a bloody Battle of Belgrade against a vast Ottoman force twice the size of his troops who were sometimes armed with just slings and patriotic fervor. To this very day church bells ring every day at noon in honour of this victory. Franciska Törőcsik plays his first love Mara, Serbian princess, who had to marry Ottoman Sultan Murad (Murathan Muslu) in order to protect her people.

WHO IS IN THE CAST?
Alongside Hunyadi, played by Gellért L. Kádár stands his wife, Elizabeth Szilagyi, portrayed by Vivien Rujder. They are joined by a stellar international cast, including Austria’s Laurence Rupp as King Albert II,  Murathan Muslu, as sultan Murad II, Serbian Hollywood star Rade Serbedzija who plays Serbian despot Djuradj Brankovic, Mara's father, and Giancarlo Giannini. The series is based on a series of books by Ban Mor. Judging by the trailer the series will have a lot of historical inaccuracies, including Despina Mara dressed as an exotic sex slave in sultan's harem. In real history, she wasn't his concubine, but his official wife and sultana and remained true to her faith till death. She dressed in Serbian chaste clothes surrounded by an entourage of Orthodox monks and nuns and later on became one of the most respected noble women in Europe with her own court in Jezhevo.

Beta Film has issued the first poster for their new ten part series RISE OF THE RAVEN an epic adventure series that will air in Autumn 2024 on Hungarian

TV2 network, Austrian ORF and other national broadcasters around Europe.

STORY IS SET
in 15th century Europe, when army commander Janos Hunyadi scores a decisive victory against all odds at the Battle of Belgrade, re-shaping the history of Europe. Hunyadi’s life is plagued by scandal, political power plays, and conspiracies between noble families from Italy, Poland, Austria, Serbia, and Hungary. His strongest allies are the women in his life: Elizabeth, the wife who not only stands by him, but fights alongside him, and Serbian princess Mara Brankovic, his first love, who was forced to become Sultan Murad wife. When the Ottoman Empire mobilises an army of unprecedented size to march west with the objective of conquering the Vatican and Europe, Hunyadi leads his small but mighty army to the battlefield, sealing a hard-fought victory. In celebration, Pope Callixtus III orders that churches all over the world shall ring their bells each day at noon. And even today, more than five centuries later, they still do.

 WHO IS IN THE CAST?
Alongside Hunyadi, played by Gellért L. Kádár stands his wife, Elizabeth Szilagyi, portrayed by Vivien Rujder. They are joined by a stellar international cast, including Austria’s Laurence Rupp as King Albert II,  Murathan Muslu, as sultan Murad II, Serbian Hollywood star Rade Serbedzija who, I imagine, plays Serbian despot Djuradj Brankovic, Mara's father, and Giancarlo Giannini. Meanwhile, Franciska Torocsik is Serbian princess Mara, later the Turkish sultana.

SEE 1ST IMAGE OF SULTANA MARA IN RISE OF THE RAVEN 15TH CENTURY EPIC TV SERIES

 RISE OF THE RAVEN
1ST LOOK AT SULTANA MARA
Probably the biggest of the upcoming historical European series RISE OF THE RAVEN, done together by national broadcasters in Central Europe and Beta Film, has offered the first look at Franciska Torocsik as Serbian
Erzsebet, Janos and Sultana Mara at the sets
princess Mara. Before she became sultana of the Ottoman empire, she was, at least in the series, the first love of the protagonist Hungarian hero Janos Hunyadi played by Gellért L. Kádár. Beside the two of them, the set photo also shows Vivien Rujder as his wife Erzsébet Szilágyi. The series will air next year. Mara, who had to marry Murad II to secure safety for Serbia, was the only sultana who was allowed to remain Christian and was deeply respected throughout Europe as a figure of enlightenment and wisdom.

  THE SERIES ITSELF FOLLOWS
the adventurous life of the heroic warrior in the 15th century, a time of struggle and adventure. In the centre of the story is famous battle of Belgrade where he stopped the Ottoman invasion into Europe. Serbian actor Rade Sherbedgia also stars next to two Barbarians' stars Laurence Rupp as Albrecht Habsburg and Murathan Muslu as Mara's husband Turkish sultan Murad II, the father of Mehmed the Conqueror who will later on steal Constantinople and announce more than 500 years of dark Ottoman rule over the Balkans.

 2023 PERIOD SET SERIES
THE ULTIMATE LIST IS HERE
Well, it is not especially ultimate as, unlike 2022 that gave us quite a lot of shows on queens and empresses, freshly launched 2023 looks rather bleak when it comes to our favourite period set genre. Out of the returning shows we
Django should start very soon on Sky

FX might finally bring us the new adaptation of SHOGUN sometime this year starring Cosmo Jarvis as the 17th century sailor who becomes a samurai. Hiroyuki Sanada and Tadanobu Asano also star. BBC will probably give us GALLOWS POLE set in the 18th century industrial revolution in Yorkshire, and possibly TEN POUND POMS with Michelle Keegan in which a group of Brits leave post-

We might also get to see Iain De Caestercker as King Arthur in THE WINTER KING in which a former warrior now turned monk, tells the story of how Arthur became the lord of war despite the illegitimacy of his throne.

2023 OFFER FROM NETFLIX
Netflix does not really have much in offer from the genre. February should bring us Italian series THE LAW ACCORDING TO LIDIA POET with Matilda de Angelis. Forbidden from practicing law, a woman prepares an appeal to overturn the court's decision in this true 19th century story of Lidia Poët, Italy's first female lawyer. Poe's THE FALL OF THE HOUSE
Lidia Poet will start this February on Netflix
OF USHER should also arrive to the streamer sometime this year starring Bruce Greenwood, Zach Gilford, Mark Hamil and Carla Gugino.

Beside the new season of Catherine the Great series, this time titled VELIKAYA: THE GOLDEN AGE in which Liza Boyarska takes over the

APPLE TO LEAD THE GENRE
Surprisingly enough, Apple TV Plus will probably dominate the genre this year. They have THE BUCCANEERS set in the 1870s when a bunch of rich American girls are trying to find a posh English husband during

  WHAT IS DISNEY PREPARING
We are also not used to getting costume drama from Disney Plus, but this year they are bringing us THE BALLAD OF RENEGADE NELL about an 18th century female renegade who will cross paths with Queen Anne and play

RISE OF THE RAVEN
Now, I am not sure this one will be done for airing this year, but it might: RISE OF THE RAVEN is this year's most expensive epic series from Central Europe done for Hungarian TV2, Austrian ORF and our dear Beta Film. Based on Bán Mór’s bestselling novels, the ten part series follows Hungarian warrior Janos Hunyadi, who defeated the Ottoman army in 1456 at the Battle of Belgrade, halting its march across Europe. Set among the scandals, political power plays and court intrigues of medieval Europe, the $30 million series is nevertheless a human story at heart, with Gellért L. Kádár playing Hunyadi, and Vivien Rujder as his life partner, Elizabeth Szilagyi. Laurence Rupp, Murathan Muslu and Rade Sherbedgia also star.
