NEW INTERNATIONAL HISTORICAL MOVIES: SHOEMAKER FROM CANADA, MEASURES OF MEN AND SISI AND I FROM GERMANY

  NEW INTERNATIONAL FILMS
THE SHOEMAKER FROM CANADA
We are angling towards the end of winter and with first signs of spring directors are slowly starting to offer their upcoming works to buyers, producers and
The Shoemaker arrives this March
distributors especially with Berlin Film market ahead of us, so today I have made for you a selection of international movies of the historical genre that we can look forward to this year or very soon. The first one on the list comes from Canada, their historical drama THE SHOEMAKER (La Cordonnière) from director Francois Bouvier will arrive into Canadian cinemas next month, March 17th starring Rose-Marie Perreault whom we watched in Germinal series, Pierre-Yves Cardinal, Nicolas Fontaine. Set at the turn of the 20th century, it follows the humble beginnings of the career of Victoire Dussault, founder of the shoemaker's shop that will give rise to the fortune of the Dufresne family, known today in Canada also for the castle they had built on the outskirts of Montreal.

GERMAN MEASURES OF MEN
I also have for you first photos and exciting trailer for sweeping historical drama MEASURES OF MEN (Der vermessene Mensch) which should arrive into German cinemas next month as well and will air at Berlinale. Alexander Hoffmann (Leonard Scheicher) is determined to continue the legacy of his father, a pioneering ethnologist. At university, he gets caught up in the maelstrom of the evolutionist race theory of the late 19th century. Hoffmann is disgusted by the measuring of skulls, which has no other purpose than to pseudo-scientifically legitimise the superiority of the white race – but he goes along with it. He wants to find counter-evidence and seeks contact with Kezia Kambazemi, the interpreter of a delegation of Nama and Herero in Berlin who have been forced to take part in a “peoples show”. Shortly after the delegation leaves, an uprising against the German colonial power begins in what was then “German Southwest Africa”. As an ethnologist, Hoffmann becomes a member of an expedition and travels all over the country under the protection of the imperial army in search of skulls – and of Kezia.

GERMAN SISI AND I
After two series and a film, we are getting yet another movie on Austrian empress Sisi, but this time from the angle of one of her ladies. SISI AND I (Sisi Und Ich) coming from director Frauke Finsterwalder should arrive
Sisi And I also arrives this March
into German, Austrian and Swiss cinemas March 30th!  What would you say if you could suddenly work for the most famous and sought-after woman of your century? Travel the world with her and have the chance to maybe even become her best friend? All of this could be so beautiful. Wouldn't you have fallen madly in love with her? What a disaster. This is how Countess Irma (Sandra Hüller) feels. Empress Sisi (Susanne Wolff) has reached the last half of her life. Irma finds her surrounded by women in a kind of noble commune in Greece, a universe away from the etiquette of the Austrian court. Sisi lives in absolute freedom, in which neither her children nor her husband play a role. The only important thing is that there is no boredom and that the empress herself determines the rules of the game. Irma falls head over heels in love with the intoxicatingly charismatic Sisi and her modern ideas. Together they travel wherever the mood takes them. And everything could go on forever if Sisi weren't Empress. The world is reaching out to break her. And as much as Irma and Sisi resist, in the end there is only one fatal path that will bind the two women together forever. Tom Rhys Harries, Anthony Calf, Georg Friedrich also star.
