Really could not imagine a better director for it: as Variety reports, Stephen Frears is set to direct THE ANARCHY epic series, an adaptation of William Dalrymple's book “The Anarchy: The Relentless Rise of the East India Company”, a historical epic which chronicles how back in the 18th century the East India Company, described as a dangerously unregulated start-up operating from a small London office, executed the takeover of the entire Indian subcontinent, which at the time constituted more than one-fourth of the world’s GDP.  The series will be shot in UK and Asia for Wiip global studios.

Jeremy Brock will pen the adaptation

King of Scotland and Mrs. Brown scribe Jeremy Brock will pen the TV series adaptation of William Dalrymple's bestseller THE ANARCHY! The massive production to be shot in UK, USA and India will tell  the story of how one of the world’s most magnificent empires, the Mughal empire, disintegrated and came to be replaced by the British East India Company – a dangerously unregulated private company based thousands of miles away in a small London office just five windows wide. No news on the adaptation of Dalrymple's Koh-I-Noor book which was also announced three years ago.

We are in the international waters today, spylings, as I have posters to present from two new period set movies. First up is SULIS 1907 from Norway, a historical drama scheduled for release October 6th. Directed by Nils Gaup and starring Otto Fahlgren, Simon J. Berger, Alexandra Gjerpen, Anders Dahlberg and Rune Temte, this period set movie starts in 1907, when the miners in Sulitjelma in Fauske in Nordland made a famous rebellion against greedy mine owners.

Earlier this summer I announced that William Dalrymple's THE ANARCHY book on the rise of the East India company will be turned into a TVseries and now another of his books KOHINOOR: The History Of World's Most Infamous Diamond, written together with Anita Anand, will get a series adaptation too by 185 Carat Films from Mumbai! The book describes the winding true story of the Indian diamond, the 27th largest in the world, which is currently part of the British Crown Jewels. The precious stone changed hands between various factions in south and west Asia, until being ceded to Queen Victoria after the British annexation of the Punjab in 1849. Television has never witnessed a historical story of this magnitude, where bloodshed, love, sex, intrigue, beauty and cruelty all come together to create a layered narrative. This story, rooted in South Asia and traversing countries like Afghanistan and Iran, has a unique international appeal. It is a timely story of greed, power and appropriation regardless of cost.
