HALEY JOEL OSMENT JOINS RICHARD MADDEN IN SF SERIES

We're again all sf today, starting with the news coming from 'Deadline' that one of our most anticipated of the upcoming TV series Amazon's and Richard Madden's STRANGE NEW THINGS has just cast Haley Joel Osment in one of the roles!

STRANGE NEW THINGS is based on Michel Faber's book set in the near future, when Earth is becoming unsustainable. Richard Madden stars as Peter, a priest who is sent into space to help found a new colony, but what he ends up discovering not only puts his faith to the test but life as we know it. Osment will play Sy, a man who used to grow large quantities of marijuana before being recruited to work on the new colony as chief botanist.

Monday brings us the first trailer for sf thriller out next year LIFE starring Ryan Reynolds, Jake Gyllenhaal and Rebecca Ferguson! It follows a six member crew of the International Space Station that is on the cutting edge of one of the most important discoveries in human history: the first evidence of extraterrestrial life on Mars. As the crew begins to conduct research, their methods end up having unintended consequences and the life form proves more intelligent than anyone ever expected.

Mindblowing TV news today: while we are waiting for the start of his new historical series Medici: Masters of Florence (also known as Kingdom of Gold, it airs in Italy this October), our most beloved Game of Thrones, Klondike and Cinderella star Richard Madden has been cast as the lead in Amazon's STRANGE NEW THINGS new sf series!

Based on Michel Faber's bestseller The Book of Strange New Things, STRANGE NEW THINGS will see Richard Madden playing Peter, a priest, who is sent into space to help found a new colony but what he ends up discovering not only puts his faith to the test but life as we know it.

'THE TERROR' TV SERIES

Meanwhile, in other news from the fantasy front: Rome and Outlander star Tobias Menzies, who also appeared in Game of Thrones, will lead the TV series adaptation of THE TERROR novel by Dan Simmons!

The ten episode AMC series will have the story set in 1847, following a Royal Navy expedition crew searching for the Northwest Passage which gets attacked by a mysterious predator that stalks the ships and their crews in a suspenseful and desperate game of survival. It is a fictionalized account of Captain Sir John Franklin’s lost expedition of HMS Erebus and HMS Terror.

Probably the main TV news coming to us this weekend was that Hulu will do a remake of classic series THE HANDMAID'S TALE based on Margaret Atwood's book with Elisabeth Moss taking the lead role!

DYSTOPIA OF GILEAD  
It is set in the dystopian Gilead, a totalitarian society in what was formerly part of the United States. Facing environmental disasters and a plunging birthrate, Gilead is ruled by a twisted religious fundamentalism that treats women as property of the state. As one of the few remaining fertile women, Offred is a Handmaid in the Commander’s household, one of the caste of women forced into sexual servitude as a last desperate attempt to repopulate a devastated world. In this terrifying society where one wrong word could end her life, Offred navigates between Commanders, their cruel Wives, domestic Marthas, and her fellow Handmaids – where anyone could be a spy for Gilead — with one goal: to survive and find the daughter that was taken from her.

Speaking of sf, Amazon will turn Michel Faber's critically renowned book THE BOOK OF STRANGE NEW THINGS into a 10 episode series to be helmed by Kevin Macdonald with music from Brian Eno!  The story revolves around Peter Leigh, an English pastor who embarks on the journey of a lifetime into deep space that takes him light years away from his beloved wife, Bea. As' Deadline' reports, 'while the project’s scale is believed to be epic, described as “Heart Of Darkness in space, at its centre is a heart-wrenching love story of a husband and wife with the universe between them'.
