After last year's The Cook of Castamar, which was semiboring but watchable, we are getting another period set series coming to Netflix from Spain and

The new Spanish series arrives April 15th

this time it will be HEIRS TO THE LAND (Los Herederos De La Tierra) a follow up to the glorious historical drama Cathe- dral of the Sea which we watched a few years ago. It will also be based on the novels by Ilde- fonso Falcones just like Cathedral del Mar was. It is interesting that Netflix, who will stream the new eight part series on April 15th, will have exclusive first window rights to the new series for 12 months, after which the drama will also be available on Antena 3 and Spain's TV3 for three months! Directed by Jordi Frades it will have the main cast headlined by Yon González, Elena Rivera, Rodolfo Sancho, Michelle Jenner, María Rodríguez, Pere Arquillué, Manel Sans, Mercedes León and Natalia Sánchez.If it proves successful with the audiences around the world, the series could get a second season order, but given that Netflix has given almost no marketing to this new series, we probably shouldn't be overly optimistic, but you never know, the books have millions of fans around the world and have been translated in many different languages.

 

 THE SERIES THAT FOLLOWS

a resourceful young Hugo Llor who works to make a name for himself in 14th-century Barcelona while keeping a vow he made to the Estanyol family, sees the 12-year-old boy as the main protagonist who struggles to fulfil his dream of becoming a shipbuilding craftsman. The new Spanish Netflix series takes us to Barcelona at the end of the 14th century and tells the story of the young  Hugo Llor (David Solans and Yon González), the son of a deceased sailor, who works in the shipyards thanks to the generosity of one of the most respected men of the city: Arnau Estanyol (Aitor Luna). His dream of becoming a shipbuilder will be truncated when the Puig family, a staunch enemy of his mentor, takes advantage of his position before the new king to carry out a revenge that they had been cherishing for years.

NEW HISTORICAL SERIES

COMING TO SPANISH TV IN 2018

Our Italian spies over at Costumical World have alerted us recently on two historical series that will air during newly started 2018 at Spanish television. Now, I know you probably won't be able to watch them unless you live somewhere in Europe and your national television buys it for broadcasting, but you can still enjoy the sets, costumes and period atmosphere in these photos and trailers!

'CATHEDRAL OF THE SEA'  
One of the more ambitious ones is definitely the small screen mini series adaptation of CATHEDRAL OF THE SEA (La Catedral del Mar) from Spanish channel Antena 3 based on the super popular historical novel by Spanish writer Ildefonso Falcones which has been sold in millions of copies in more than 40 countries around the world. The story of the book and the eight episode series takes place in the 14th century Barcelona at the height of the Inquisition era, with the construction of Santa Maria del Mar serving as background to the story of the main character Arnau Estanyol (Aitor Luna), the son of a fugitive serf who obtains freedom and eventually achieves a high status. Revenge, love and treachery intersect in a fascinating story that has a medieval Barcelona as background in a historical period marked by religious intolerance and social segregation. Daniel Grao, Silvia Abascal and Andrea Duro also star in the historical drama which used more than 150 actors, hundreds of crew members and around 4,000 extras. The production also involved more than 200 animals including horses and dogs.

The Plague starts next week in Spain

Now, if you are currently eating your dindins I must warn you that the photos from the next one might ruin it a bit! Another epic series to premier sometime this year in Spain is THE PLAGUE (La Peste)  set two centuries after the previously mentioned one with a little less joyful topic. 

 16TH CENT- URY SEVILLE
Believe it or not, the Inquisition and religious intolerance weren't the only pests that Spain had to suffer throughout its history. There was also the real pest: rats carrying plague! The six episode saga from Moviestar +  is set in Seville, 16th century. During a terrible plague epidemic, the corpses of several murdered people are found, as an omen of the end of the world. Seville was one of the main cities of the Western world. Known as the Great Babylon, it was home to people of all races, where fifty different languages were spoken, and all the gold from America arrived into its port. It was one of the smelliest, most beautiful cities in the world, and the setting for this unique, character- driven thriller. Pablo Molinero and Paco León lead the cast of the six episode series which starts airing January 12th!
