ROBIN WILLIAMS (1951-2014)
WHEN THE LAUGHTER ENDS
Genie, you're free - that was the tweet the Academy of Motion Pictures and Arts has posted in honour of Robin Williams who died last night after suffering from depression for years. I must admit I've been on the brink of tears all day long: he was one of the greatest actors of all times, the one who made so many childhoods enriched with his wonderful magic, the one who radiated so much heartwarming and inspiring energy to the world around him. In the world of crude, rude and offensive comedians, he was the gentle light that shone with kindness and love. Which of his roles are your favourite ones? I loved his comedy roles, but I also deeply respected the depth of his dramatic roles (ONE HOUR PHOTO, WHAT DREAMS MAY COME, INSOMNIA). He was the light of our movie lives and I don't know if the world will be the same without him. One of the most beautiful stories I remember about him is how he took care of his long-time friend Christopher Reeve's son (who not only lost his father in 2004 but a year after his mother too) when he was left without parents.
STILL TO WATCH FROM ROBIN
There are other films that he made that await their premieres: he reprised his role of Teddy Roosevelt in NIGHT IN THE MUSEUM SECRET OF THE TOMB which opens this December. A bit earlier this November you will watch him next to Lauren Graham in MERRY FRIGGIN CHRISTMAS. A sequel for his greatest hit MRS. DOUBTFIRE was also planned.

NEW 'FOREVER' POSTER
IOAN GRUFFUDD IS IMMORTAL
If only Robin could've lived forever like the main character of ABC's new series FOREVER which starts airing September 22nd. Movie star Ioan Gruffudd will play Doctor Henry Morgan, New York City’s star medical examiner, who has a secret. He doesn't just study the dead to solve criminal cases, he does it to solve the mystery that has eluded him for 200 years—the answer to his own inexplicable immortality.
Such sad news about Robin. The world has lost a bright ray of sunshine.
ReplyDeleteand he hasn't even left an heir... someone to shine like him in the comedy world.... Although I do recognise a bit of his deep goodness and radiant warmth in Tom Hiddleston....
DeleteWilliams will be missed.
ReplyDeleteAfter watching the trailer I was left with one question...
What happens to his bodies after he dies, and is resurrected in the river? Maybe I will have to tune in to find out.
Deeply missed.... forever!
DeleteI've no idea, hope the show will be good and I haven't seen the actor from DEAR, JOHN for decades....
Carpe diem...
ReplyDeletewhile you still can..
DeleteWhen I heard I had a hard time processing the news. It took a while to sink in. The Hubby and I spent the evening watching a lot of his old stand up routines.
ReplyDeleteMy favourite movie of his was The Fisher King. Next, What Dreams May Come. And third Awakenings. Also like The World According to Garp and many others.
He shall be missed by his fans and grieved terribly by his family.
It happened during the night here, so I woke up this morning to the news and I spent the whole day today with a lump in my throat :(
DeleteThe man who spread so much happiness around him and yet died unhappy :(
Robin Williams' death is such a shocking and tragic story. It shows once again how the greatest comedic genius is often closely related to unbearable pain.
ReplyDeletethe most shocking celebrity death for me ever. And it is so true that the ones who give out the most happiness are often times the saddest people in their own hearts :(
DeleteIt is a sad quiet day in the world, we had someone... we lost someone. We will remember the good things, the funny things... the sad things. Today the stage goes empty and the crowd hangs it's head down low... Mr. Williams, Rest in Peace...
ReplyDeleteJeremy [retro]
wish he ruled the stage at least a bit longer :(
DeleteSo sad about Robin W. but I want to remember his work like Mrs. Doubtfire and Bicentennial Man. Forever has me curious but unsure about tuning in.
ReplyDeleteHe had so many great roles, he gave great performance even in bad films.
DeleteI feel the same as you. Every time I read this I get teary eyed again. He was one of the greats. It's a heavy day.
ReplyDeleteI teared up finally while I was writing the post
DeleteI'm still absolutely stunned. And like you, tearful also.
ReplyDeleteNearly twenty-four hours after the news broke, Robin Williams is 'still' trending on twitter. A record. Shows just how much he was loved and respected.
My heart breaks for his family. Such a loss ...
all the TV stations here are playing his movies, and over in UK too. Reading his daughter's goodbye to her father was especially heartbreaking....
DeleteYes, I just read that a couple of hours ago. Heartbreaking.
Deleteabsolutely
DeleteIt was as if someone I knew personally had died. He had that kind of connection with people. So sad that he couldn't get the help he needed for depression. Such a terrible condition to live with.
ReplyDeleteabsolutely, everybody loved him, he was always so full of love for others .. and to be so loved by others and yet lonely and sad and in pain....
DeleteA legend is gone forever
ReplyDeletethe saddest truth
DeleteSo very sad about Robin Williams. I really liked Good Morning Vietnam and Mrs. Doubtfire.
ReplyDeleteForever looks great. Can't wait.
Our TV here is just airing GOOD MORNING VIETNAM in his honour :(
DeleteLast night we watched Mrs Doubtfire and Aladdin. The man was a genius, and like you said, there is no one to pick up his baton.
ReplyDeleteJust so so sad.
Absolutely no one :(
DeleteIt's truly sad to lose Robin Williams. He had so much to offer. Depression is a terrible thing.
ReplyDeleteThe most terrible because millions can love you and you can still feel unloved
DeleteSuch a manic, genius comedian and actor. So, so sad that his light has gone out.
ReplyDeleteit's the saddest celebrity death that I remember in my life....
DeleteNo, that would be Elvis.... Oh wait, you're young. Well, in that case you're right. I'm still in denial and I don't even know the man.
DeleteI thought Elvis is still alive?
DeleteOne of my favorite actors. Such a sad, sad passing. Allison asked who Robin Williams was today. I told her Genie from Aladdin, which is one of her favorite movies. She was very upset that "genie" had passed. We are currently watching some of our favorite Disney films in preparation of our upcoming trip there this fall. I think it will be hard to get through Aladdin without shedding a tear. He was a brilliant man with such a fabulous comedic wit about him. No one can fill his shoes :(
ReplyDeleteand how magnificent he was as Genie, such a simple role which only he could make so brilliant.
DeleteSo sad about Robin. Too bad meds couldn't help, but in a newscast last night, the doctor was saying the meds that help with the depression also tend to stifle the creativity.
ReplyDeleteLove the sound of Immortal. Hugh Ioan Gruffudd fan, ever since Horatio Hornblower.
Those meds can be both helpful and dangerous as all other pills... and they do leave you numb....
DeleteRobin Williams was one of my favorites - ever. Not only was he a brilliant stand up comedian but a brilliant actor as well. I will miss him.
ReplyDeleteand such a brilliant person too!
DeleteThe Academy is coming under fire for that tweet due to the message it may send to depressed people, but the Academy just ripped it off from the 100 or so other people who had posted it. Minutes after the news broke, an actress named Evan Rachel Wood posted it and it was EXACTLY the same as the one the Academy posted an hour later. They didn't retweet Evan Rachel Wood's--just made it look like it was their idea. So now Evan Rachel Wood is no longer being given credit for it, although she was at first:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2014/08/11/robin-williams-evan-rachel-wood-genie-tweet_n_5670277.html
that quote is so general, and so popular, that I'm entirely sure more than one person could've come up with using it yesterday. I don't think that the Academy reads Evan's twitter profile.
DeleteI love this post ABout Robin Williams Thanks Dezzy!
ReplyDeleteAn amazing man and a great comedian!
Amazing movies and lovely memories about him and always make me laugh and sometimes cry!
xoxox
glad you liked it, Gloria. We will love Robin forever!
DeleteIt stopped me right in my tracks. It's so depressing.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite movie is Moscow on the Hudson.
I especially loved how he tackled ONE HOUR PHOTO role, I will always remember the end of the movie and his expression and voice in it. I truly loved him with all my heart... there aren't many actors out there like him.
DeleteSo true.
Deletevery much so
