Paramount + is as usual terrible when it comes to marketing of their shows so it is no surprise I almost missed that their new UK original THE BURNING

Series starts October 19th on Paramount Plus

GIRLS based on the novel by CJ Tudor with Samantha Morton in the lead role, is ready to launch from October 19th which is this Thursday. 

 

   THE SERIES IS SET IN

Chapel Croft, a village haunted by a dark and turbulent history. Five hundred years ago, Protestant martyrs – including two young girls – were betrayed and burned at the stake. Thirty years ago, two teenage girls disappeared without a trace. And a few weeks ago, the vicar of the local parish hanged himself in the nave of the church. renewed their super popular historical saga THE LAST KINGDOM for the fourth season (I've heard rumours, but don't tell anyone, that they've actually secretly ordered the fifth season as well)! And you know what this means: you watched the third season, which is currently airing on Netflix, in great numbers! 

The third season was shot by Carnival Films without BBC as the co producer and has ten episodes instead of the usual eight. The season saw our hero, brave knight Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon) break his bonds with disrespectful King Alfred of Wessex (David Dawson) and also with his Danish brothers. Hopefully, the fans won't have to wait more than a year for the fourth season

The series has been a major success for the streaming network

like they did with the current one. So far, the writers have covered six novels of Bernard Cornwell’s 11 part saga the show is based upon. We can probably expect more battles for Uhtred and his merry gang of warriors and probably

Are you excited, people? The first epic television series to hit the small screens this spring will be the second season of the mediaeval adventure THE LAST KINGDOM which will start airing at BBC Two from March 16th and on Netflix around the world. The adaptation of Bernard Cornwell's epic novel saga The Saxon Stories will be based on the third and the fourth book The Lords of the North and Sword Song set in the emotionally complex and compelling landscape of revenge, rivalry, hostility, corruption, love, sex, loyalty and friendship! The new members of the cast include Richard Rankin, Toby Regbo, Peter McDonald, Mark Rowley, Arnas Fedaravichius and Millie Brady.

FIGHT FOR YOUR RIGHT
Set in the year 878, the second series returns as fearless and instinctive warrior Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon) continues his fight for his native land of Northumbria. Uhtred, having given his sword to King Alfred (David Dawson), despite his upbringing by the invading pagan Danes, embarks on his voyage north to reclaim his own fate: to avenge Earl Ragnar’s death and recapture his ancestral lands of Bebbanburg. WHAT TO EXPECT IN EPISODE ONE

In the first episode of the second season  King Alfred’s conviction to unite the separate kingdoms of England is stronger than ever and he sets his sights on the wild lands of the north, which have fallen into the control of savage Dane brothers Sigefrid (Björn Bengtsson) and Erik (Christian Hillborg). Upon receiving word from Brother Trew (Richard Rankin) and Father Beocca (Ian Hart) about a prophesied new king in the form of Christian Dane Guthred, Alfred sends the priests on a rescue mission, weighted in silver to free Guthred from the hands of slave traders. Elsewhere, Uhtred still feels the loss of Iseult and, fearful that they are straying from their journey north, Hild (Eva Birthisle) takes matters into her own hands to advance their quest. While crossing paths with Father Beocca in Eoferwic, Uhtred finds himself embroiled in a rescue mission and is brought face to face with an enemy of old. As the team enter into dangerous territory, will the exchange of ransom go to plan?

It seems that after they've collaborated on the second season of epic TV series The Last Kingdom (check it down below), BBC and Netflix will work again on another period set lavish saga! As it has been confirmed today, they will produce TROY: FALL OF A CITY epic mini series which will tell the story of the siege of Troy from the point of view of a Trojan family! Written by the scribes of Tom Hiddleston's Night Manager, 'the bold and visceral rendition of the 3000 year old classic, told across multiple parts, will be Intimate and epic, gripping and exhilarating, rich with psychological intrigue and human drama, bringing the characters' passions, pain and loss'. Shooting starts this month so expect casting updates soon!

'THE FAVOURITE' MOVIE CASTS

NICHOLAS HOULT NEXT TO RACHEL WEISZ AND EMMA STONE
 Speaking of epic projects, Yorgos Lanthimos' new period set movie drama THE FAVOURITE has just cast Nicholas Hoult who will now join Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone in the story that follows the political machinations behind the scenes during the reign of Queen Anne, the last monarch of the House of Stuarts. The story takes place between the end of the 17th century and first years of the 18th century, when Anne reigned from 1702-1707. Olivia Colman is set to play Queen Anne, with Rachel Weisz as her lady Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough and Emma Stone as Abigail Masham, an impoverished, distant relative of Sarah, who gains a position at court tending to the Queen. Nicholas Hoult will be Harley,the Tory party leader during the reign of Queen Anne!

Now, here's an unusual pair: as 'The Hollywood Reporter' writes today, British Rose Kate Winslet is currently negotiating to join Idris Elba in the adventure survival big screen adaptation of Charles Martin's book THE MOUNTAIN BETWEEN US

The romantic drama tells of a woman, engaged to be married, and a surgeon who charter a plane to get them home after inclement weather delays their flight. When the plane crashes in a snowy wilderness, the two must work together to survive.

To end our period set projects weekend in a regal way, here's a spotlight on BBC America's new historical series THE LAST KINGDOM which is to bring 9th century into your Saturday evenings when it starts airing October 10th! Adapted from Bernard Cornwell’s “The Saxon Stories,” THE LAST KINGDOM sees many of the separate kingdoms of what we now know as England under invading Vikings, with only the great Kingdom of Wessex standing defiant under its visionary King Alfred the Great (David Dawson).

BRAVE PRINCE UHTRED
Our main hero is Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon). Born the son of a Saxon nobleman, he is orphaned by the Vikings and then kidnapped and raised as one of their own. Forced to choose between the country of his birth and the people of his upbringing, his loyalties are ever tested. What is he — Saxon or Viking? On a quest to claim his birthright, Uhtred must tread a dangerous path between both sides if he is to play his part in the birth of a new nation and, ultimately, recapture his ancestral lands!

LORD UHTRED OF BEBBANBURG

Uhtred’s father, Lord Uhtred (Matthew MacFadyen), is a formidable fighter and ruler of the kingdom of Bebbanburg in Northumbria. He is a serious and rather distant man whose commitments to Bebbanburg leave little time for his two sons. Young Uhtred struggles to win his father’s affection and approval.

KING ALFRED THE GREAT
As the King who dreamt of uniting the separate kingdoms of England, Alfred (David Dawson) has integrity and is a thinker, master strategist, yet troubled by poor health. A man of great wisdom, he is committed to the power of the written word and the spread of Christianity. Even Uhtred, who first sees Alfred as a humourless nit-picker, grows to admire the man who will become known as King Alfred the Great.

FEARLESS WARRIOR BRIDA

Alongside Uhtred, Brida (Emily Cox) is captured as a child and raised by Danes. Brida and Uhtred’s similar fates bind them as kindred spirits; the two become best friends. Fearless, gutsy, outspoken, and a born fighter, Brida immediately feels at home in the boisterous world of the Danes.

FEROCIOUS WARRIOR UBBA
The most senior ranking Dane, Ubba (Rune Temte) is loud, brash, violent, playful and a little unhinged. A ferocious warrior, Uhtred is warned as a boy never to fight Ubba, but fate may dictate that he must. Ubba’s weakness is his superstition and his reliance on his sorcerer Storri.

RAGNAR THE YOUNGER

Uhtred’s Danish brother Ragnar the Younger (Tobias Santelmann) is  handsome, brave, loyal and fair. Ragnar embodies the Viking way of life for Uhtred — freedom, passion, challenge and adventure…a world away from the strictures of Alfred’s court.

THE BLIND POET RAVN
Ravn (Rutger Hauer), is a ‘skald’ (a Viking poet and wise man). Given his considerable life experience, he is philosophical about the struggles of the Danes and is able to impart his wisdom to young Uhtred, who often acts as the eyes of blind Ravn.

AELFRIC THE USURPER

Aelfric (Joseph Millson) is Uhtred’s uncle and usurper of the throne of Bebbanburg. Aelfric is unscrupulous, scheming and power hungry. He sees Uhtred as a barrier to his claim on Bebbanburg and is committed to his demise.

One of the new historical series we are looking most forward to this Autumn is definitely BBC's epic drama THE LAST KINGDOM which arrives onto the small screens October 10 at BBC America (hopefully, maybe a bit sooner at BBC Two?). Today you can check out some epic new photos from the series which might bring us a new TV hunk in the form of lead actor Alexander Dreymon who is also joined in the series by brilliant David Dawson (he was magnetic in BANISHED), Matthew MacFadyen and Rutger Hauer. Gareth Neame, producer, said the show will be more refined like TUDORS and DOWNTON ABBEY and less mindlessly brutal as some of today's shows.

ONE KING, ONE ENGLAND  
Based on Bernard Cornwell's popular THE SAXON STORIES novel series, THE LAST KINGDOM is set in the late ninth century, when what is known as England today was several separate kingdoms. The Anglo-Saxon lands are attacked and in many instances ruled by Viking forces. The kingdom of Wessex has been left standing alone under the command of King Alfred the Great (David Dawson). The main protagonist, Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon) - the orphaned son of a Saxon nobleman, is kidnapped by norsemen and raised as one of them. Forced to choose between a kingdom that shares his ancestry and the people of his upbringing, his loyalties are ever tested.
Rutger Hauer plays a wise Viking poet, Jason Flemyng appears as King Edmund with Alec Newman as King Aethelred while Ian Hart and Nordic star Tobias Santelmann are also in the cast together with our dear Caroline Boulton and Simon Nader in smaller roles. Costume designer Ross Little who worked on THE BIBLE and CRIMSON FIELD historical mini series is doing the costumes!
