Just three days before the start of the official airing, BBC One has finally released a trailer for their new period set drama HOWARDS END which starts airing this Sunday in four episodes, with Starz broadcasting the story of two couples caught in a swirling landscape of social and class divisions in turn of the century England sometime next year for the audience in USA.
THE STORY OF HOWARDS END
based on E.M. Forster's classic novel, focuses on Margaret Schlegel (Hayley Atwell), an intelligent, idealistic, bohemian young woman who is courted by the older Henry Wilcox (Matthew Macfadyen), a self-made conservative businessman, after his wife Ruth Wilcox (Julia Ormond) dies

WHAT DID THE SPY THINK?
The first episode is visually enchanting, story intriguing, performances mostly well done, but the series turns into a ghastly monotonous snobbish gibberish fest filled with shallow existentialist dialogues as early as the second episode and then finishes as an ode to blatant golddiggers with not an ounce of sense whatsoever.
ALEXANDER DREYMON, MATTHEW MACFADYEN, DAVID DAWSON
One of the new historical series we are looking most forward to this Autumn is definitely BBC's epic drama THE LAST KINGDOM which arrives onto the small screens October 10 at BBC America (hopefully, maybe a bit sooner at BBC Two?). Today you can check out some epic new photos from the series which might bring us a new TV hunk in the form of lead actor Alexander Dreymon who is also joined in the series by brilliant David Dawson (he was magnetic in BANISHED), Matthew MacFadyen and Rutger Hauer. Gareth Neame, producer, said the show will be more refined like TUDORS and DOWNTON ABBEY and less mindlessly brutal as some of today's shows.
ONE KING, ONE ENGLAND Based on Bernard Cornwell's popular THE SAXON STORIES novel series,
THE LAST KINGDOM is set in the late ninth century, when what is known as
England today was several separate kingdoms. The Anglo-Saxon lands are
attacked and in many instances ruled by Viking forces. The kingdom of
Wessex has been left standing alone under the command of King Alfred the
Great (David Dawson). The main protagonist, Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon) -
the orphaned son of a Saxon nobleman, is kidnapped by norsemen and
raised as one of them. Forced to choose between a kingdom that shares
his ancestry and the people of his upbringing, his loyalties are ever
tested. Rutger Hauer plays a wise Viking poet, Jason Flemyng appears as
King Edmund with Alec Newman as King Aethelred while Ian Hart and Nordic
star Tobias Santelmann are also in the cast together with our dear
Caroline Boulton and Simon Nader in smaller roles. Costume designer Ross Little who
worked on THE BIBLE and CRIMSON FIELD historical mini series is doing the costumes!
MICHAEL WESTON AND STEPHEN MANGAN TO LEAD THE CAST
In today's TV news, ITV has found the lead star for their intriguing new historical series HOUDINI & DOYLE: the period drama following the real-life friendship of Sherlock Holmes writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and illusionist Harry Houdini will see Stephen Mangan and Michael Weston leading the cast. Mangan will be Doyle, prolific writer and paranormal aficionado, while Weston will be Houdini, master magician, escape artist and paranormal debunker.
Set at the turn of the 20th century, the drama will explore their unique friendship and how they both worked with New Scotland Yard on unsolved crimes. Rebecca Liddiard will play Constable Adelaide Stratton, the first female PC to work for the London Metropolitan Police Force. Tim McInnerny will play Inspector Horace Merring, while Adam Nagaitis will appear as Sergeant George Gudgett.
'THE NIGHTINGALE' BESTSELLER
GETS BIG SCREEN ADAPTATION Meanwhile, a book that has spent more than 20 weeks on New York
Times' bestseller list, THE NIGHTINGALE will get its big screen
adaptation. CHRONICLES OF NARNIA's Ann Peacock will pen the script at
TriStar based on the book by Kristin Hannah (it is her 21st book),
published a few months ago, an epic family drama about two sisters
living in France during WWII in which the story follows them as one
becomes a prisoner in her own home and the other fights for the
resistance.

And I don't know how I missed the first teaser for BBC 2's and BBC America's THE LAST KINGDOM epic series, even though it's constantly on my radar, but here it is now! It stars Alexander Dreymon, Rutger Hauer and Matthew McFadyen, with the story set in the late 9th century, when England was separated into several kingdoms. The Anglo-Saxon lands are attacked and in many instances ruled by Viking forces. The kingdom of Wessex has been left standing alone under the command of King Alfred the Great. Dreymon's Uhtred - the orphaned son of a Saxon nobleman, is kidnapped by Norsemen and raised as one of them.
