After a few unsuccessful years in Hollywood, Antonio Banderas has taken things into his own hands so he will produce, write and direct a biopic on Boabdil according to "FirstShowingNet". The exotic historical movie will tell the story of Abu Abdullah Muhammad XII, the last Muslim ruler of the Emirate of Granada in Spain. Despite the foreign setting and characters, the film will be shoot completely in English but not before 2012. since Banderas hasn't found financing yet. Antonio Banderas hasn't given himself the main role but he will do a supporting one as General Gonzalo de Cordoba, who captured the kingdom for the Christians.
Boabdil spent many years fighting his own father and uncle for the throne, he also invaded Castile, but after many battles he had to surrender the city of Granada to Ferdinand and Isabella, king and queen of Castile and Aragon. The spot from which Muhammad XII looked for the last time on Granada while his royal party was moving to exile is known today as "the Moor's last sigh". King Ferdinand celebrated the conquest of Granada by taking Boabdil's daughter as one of his mistresses, and she became the mother of one of his illegitimate sons, after which she became a nun.
"Boabdil" will be a tough sell in the title her in the states...
ReplyDeleteI wondered what Banderas was doing these days.
ReplyDeleteI think this will be more of an international movie than just an American focused one.
ReplyDeleteI must say I've read a few books about Boabdil during my life, and he really had a life very suitable for filming.
Masy, he is currently preparing some movie with the obnoxious Woodie Allen.
Woody Allen? Now that's an odd mix.
ReplyDeleteAh, Alex, that Woody is odd in all sorts of ways.
ReplyDeleteit's awesome. it shows that Banderas is an big fan of the spanish history, it might be a tough movie to sell in the states, but it might surprise us all too.
ReplyDeleteHey, Daniel, welcome to HOLLYWOOD SPY, hope we'll see you frequently here :)
ReplyDeleteAnd about the movie - well who cares about Americans :) they don't have to import all the movies, we can enjoy this one without them as well :PP
It is good to hear that Mr. Banderas is creating a film about the Moors in Spain. I hope he chooses the actors carefully, many of the Moors Like General Boabdil di come from Africa.
ReplyDeletefingers crossed
DeleteCan anyone call Mr. Banderas and ask him when and where is going to start the castings!? :).
ReplyDeleteI am an enthusiastic of this kind of projects! Cheers everybody :)
we'd love to see the project happen too!:)
DeleteIt wouldn't be correct unless you represented the blackamoors with their true depiction, melanated. They had broad noses, vary dark skinned, and black coarse/curly hair.
ReplyDeleteThe truth!!!!
Deletedon't think they pay much attention to races in big films :(
DeleteNot necessarily true The "Moors" were mainly north African which are brown folks the area was mainly berber looking people. Now there was also African (Black) moors... In other words there were black and brown moors the point to this STOP despictinh the moors as Black its just as bad as saying they were white.....
DeleteI would love to see this film...i just read the book written by Antonio Gala!
ReplyDeleteHope this won`t end up just in an idea..
some of this great things in history shouldn`t be forgotten..
hopefully, but given the fact we reported this two years ago and nothing happened so far, we're not big optimists :(
