NEW MYSTERY AND DETECTIVE SHOWS TO WATCH THIS AUTUMN: MURDER BEFORE EVENSONG, LYNLEY, MAIGRET, DEATH BY LIGHTNING, THE RUMOUR

 MYSTERY DETECTIVE SHOWS 
MURDER BEFORE EVENSONG
A review of new mystery and detective series coming to the small screens this Autumn, starting with MURDER BEFORE EVENSONG in which Matthew Lewis plays Canon Daniel Clement, a rector, who finds himself entangled in a murder investigation after a cousin of the church's patron is discovered with a fatal stab wound inflicted by secateurs, leading him to unravel the mystery. The six episode series will hit Acorn TV September 29th after it premieres in UK on Channel 5. See trailer here
 
  LYNLEY WITH LEO SUTER
Already launched earlier this week over on BritBox is a new four episode remake of LYNLEY detective series in which our lovely Leo Suter plays DI Thomas Lynley who together with DS Barbara Havers forms an unlikely police detective duo. Their contrasting backgrounds create tension, but they unite to solve crimes, navigating class and gender issues. Tom Forbes and Daniel Mays also star in the series out from September 4th and you can see the trailer here.
 

NEW MAIGRET FROM PBS MASTERPIECE
Launching a bit later on, October 5th over at PBS Masterpiece is MAIGRET in which gorgeous Benjamin Wainwright plays Chief Inspector Maigret a rising star in the Paris Police Judiciaire, relentless in his investigations, with an uncanny ability to get under the skin of the criminals he is chasing and a matchless knowledge of Paris.  DEATH BY LIGHTNING OVER AT NETFLIX
Netflix is bringing us Matthew MacFadyen in their period set investigation series DEATH BY LIGHTNING which arrives November 6th also starring Michael Shannon, Betty Gilpin and Nick Offerman. This period set four episode drama dramatizes the stranger-than-fiction true story of 20th U.S. President James Garfield and admirer Charles Guiteau, who assassinated him. I will post the trailer when it is released.
 
 
THE RUMOUR FROM CHANNEL 5
British Channel 5 is ready to launch small town mystery thriller THE RUMOUR with Rachel Shenton from September 10th! She plays a mother who moves to a small town and gets entangled with a group of mothers. She exploits a rumor of a child predator living nearby, fueling gossip and heightening tensions while trying to safeguard her son amidst rising mistrust. See trailer here.

BritBox has sent us the first trailer for their four part adaptation of Elizabeth George's Inspector LYNLEY novels in which our dearest Leo Suter takes the lead role with Sofia Barclay as DS Barbara Havers. Lynley is a brilliant detective who's something of an outsider because of his aristocratic upbringing. Havers comes from a working class background, and she's more of an instinct-driven maverick. Though they have little in common and they don't always get along, they learn to work together to help get justice for victims of horrific crimes. In other TV news today, Gilded Age has been renewed for season 4 and Bergerac and Eric Banas Untamed for season 2.
 
WHO IS IN THE CAST? 
 Daniel Mays will play DCI Brian Nies, the astute, suspicious Senior Detective at Three Counties Major Incident Team, whose aversion to Lynley is partly born of his own insecurities about class and partly because he knows he’s no longer the smartest person in the room. Niamh Walsh stars as Helen Clyde, an estate agent and Lynley’s former Oxford classmate whose romance with Lynley is sparked when their paths fatefully cross on a case; Michael Workeye as tech specialist Tony Bekele; and Joshua Sher as forensic scientist, Simon St. James. The series will stream on BritBox in USA
September 4th and BBC One in UK this Autumn. Each of the four episodes of the new mini series will be a TV film of 90 minutes.

SERIES TO EXPECT ON BBC IN 2025: FROM KING AND CONQUEROR, TO LOCKERBIE, MISS AUSTEN, LYNLEY AND SECOND SEASONS OF MARIE ANTOINETTE, GOLD AND TEN POUND POMS

KINGS, QUEENS, EARLS AND DUKES
After airing the first season two years ago, BBC Two will also air the second season of MARIE ANTOINETTE series later this year. Emilia Schüle as Marie, and Louis Cunningham as the king of France, Louis XVI, return to their roles. At the height of their power, while Marie Antoinette and Louis face an unprecedented financial crisis, the incessant attacks of Provence and Chartres against the royal couple stir up the hatred of the nobles while disastrous consequences are looming with infamous Affair of the Diamond Necklace incident. From Versailles to the Palais-Royal, the revolt rumbles… Meanwhile, BBC One has acquired LYNLEY series with Leo Suter playing the famous detective. They will also have TOWARDS ZERO latest Agatha Christie adaptation with Oliver Jackson Cohen and Matthew Rhys, THE GOLD season two with Hugh Bonneville, Tom Cullen returning to the roles of the gold robbers. Australia set TEN POUND POMS will also return with the second season, while Keeley Hawes will lead MISS AUSTEN costume drama on Jane Austen's sister. At some point during the year BBC will also launch KING AND CONQUEROR epic drama with James Norton and Nicholai Coster Waldau as Harold Earl of Wessex and William, duke of Normandy. Timothy Spall will lead detective drama DEATH VALLEY, while Connor Swindells will lead BBC's version of LOCKERBIE disaster in co production with Netflix.

News from BritBox say that the British streamer is set to produce LYNLEY series, a revival of the old BBC show to be penned by Sherlock writer Steve Thompson and directed by Ed Bazalgette. Our dearest Leo Suter who is currently leading Vikings: Valhalla and Sofia Barclay (from Ted Lasso) will be leading the brand new small screen adaptation, playing DI Thomas Lynley and DS Barbara Havers, an aristocratic police detective and maverick sergeant from a working class background. Together, the mismatched duo become a formidable team, bonded by their desire to see justice done, while the series tackles issues around personality, gender and class. The series will have four 90 minute episodes.
