While the Brits are currently enraptured by Mr. Bates vs the Post Office series which unveils the national scandal in such a captivating way that the viewers are now asking for the real perpetrators to be punished, the 
Russians are preparing a series on an important moment from their own history but a much older one. Today I am bringing you the first images from their new series CHELYUSKIN: THE FIRST (Челю́скин]) about a Soviet
steamship, reinforced to navigate through polar ice, that in 1934 became ice-bound in Arctic waters during a navigation along the Northern Maritime Route from Murmansk to Vladivostok and sank. 111 people were on board the
Chelyuskin, and all but one were rescued by air. The expedition's task was to determine the possibility to travel by non-icebreaker through the Northern
Maritime Route in a single navigation season. Gleb Kalyuzhny, Sergey Godin, Kirill Goncharov, Alexey Rozin, Kirill Kyaro, Dmitry Kulichkov and Dmitry Chebotarev will lead the cast!

STORY STARTS IN FEBRUARY 1934
Navigating the Northern Sea Route in one navigation was
an ambitious goal and was of great importance for the USSR. Many
considered
this venture a futile and risky undertaking. Young and daring
polar explorers, led by Otto Schmidt, sincerely believed that they
would be able to complete 
their task on the Chelyuskin steamship. But
great ideas turned into a great tragedy - the ship was trapped in ice
and sank. Now, in the harsh Arctic conditions, the “Chelyuskinites” have
to fight for life every minute.

I don't know if I'll find the time, if I'll even find the film somewhere.
ReplyDeleteThis will be a series, not a film, your national broadcaster might buy it at some point if they air Russian series like ours do.
DeleteThe series is also a movie. It is very rare in Poland that I now have the opportunity to watch Russian productions. Sometimes I find something on the Internet.
DeleteThat is sad, we get them from time to time, but I have thrown my TV out of the house years ago, so I also depend on the Internet.
DeleteI have a TV, but only to watch movies and music videos. No news and no propaganda. Only movies: Netflix, Canal Plus, HBO and others.

ReplyDeleteVery, but Russian series have funding from their national broadcaster and it is much cheaper to shoot anything here in Europe than in USA.
DeleteYou have been introducing quite a bit of Russian series and films last few weeks. CHELYUSKIN: THE FIRST seems like something I would enjoy too.
ReplyDeleteI always cover Russians and the French when Hollywood is sleeping :) And Russians do have a lot of things in the works. Too bad Germany does not do a lot of period set things for me to cover them. Probably nothing to be proud of in their history.
DeleteI'm sure it will be a good watch, but I doubt we'll ever see it here. Germany would probably not like to focus on their history and probably avoid period pieces as much as possible. Not that we'd ever forget, but I think many years will pass before we see many period pieces from them.
ReplyDeleteBut it is not just the Nazi past, they were evil throughout history, not a lot of proud moments in it.
DeleteIndeed. Though I've never met a German I disliked, their history is not great. But neither is ours, so maybe that's why we usually get along with them here.
