DARA OF JASENOVAC
CHILLING TRAILER RELEASED!
Out of the ashes of hate comes the untold story of the indomitable human spirit. The first trailer for the shocking and deeply moving film DARA OF JASENOVAC, which will represent Serbia in the best foreign movie race at this year's Oscars and Golden Globes, is finally here. The film tells story of little Serbian girl Dara (Biljana Cekic) who comes face to face with the horrors of the Holocaust era after she, her mother and siblings are sent to the concentration camp complex known as Jasenovac. Considered one of the most overlooked parts of history, Jasenovac is run by the Croat fascist Ustase who brutally murdered Jews, Serb and Roma people, which included dozens of thousands of children, close to 100,000 victims in total (although many believe the number could be as high as one million). As unspeakable atrocities start to unfold, Dara must summon tremendous courage to protect her infant brother from a terrible fate while she safeguards her own survival and plots a precarious path towards freedom. Read more about the film here.
Serbian artists from time to time release some really moving material. Shocking, even. 😏
ReplyDeleteAlmost constantly as Serbian history has been filled with inhuman sufferings and unbelievable tragedies probably more than any other nation. Just in WW2 they lost half, and I repeat HALF, of their citizens, and that after losing also half in WW1 before that.
DeleteI have watched a few of Nazi Camp films and each one left me sad and shocked.
ReplyDeleteDidn't know there's a concentration camp in Croatia at all..This little Serbian girl Dara is really brave.
There were Nazi camps all over the Balkans, mostly used for brutal killing of Serbs, Jews and Gypsies. This one was not often talked about in the West because Croatia has strong connections with Vatican.
DeleteBrave girl, indeed. This is the kind of movie that I absolutely hate to watch, but always do because truth is never pretty. I really hope it wins the award. I can tell from the trailer alone it is going to be very moving.
ReplyDeleteThe director said that the main point of his job in this project was to establish the balance: if he made it too truthful and thus brutal and savage as it was in reality, the audience would balk but if he made it too soft and contained it would miss the point. I'm hoping it wins something, but the Nazi lobby against it is very strong, they are already denying the event at YouTube in comments.
DeleteI couldn’t watch this if I wanted to. You will have to circle back and let us know if they survive. I’ve read books about concentration camps but have never heard of this one. The most recent book I read was about the Ravensbruk camp. It’s hard enough reading about the adults let alone the children. It scares me to think that people can be brought to that level of evil..
ReplyDeleteI’m afraid to ask, but I’m circling back to do it.. why were Serbians targets of the nazis?
DeleteGermans always nurtured a special hate towards us because we stopped their plans of conquering Balkans many times throughout history, the same reason why the Muslims hate us as we stopped their entrance into Europe many times in the past. We were blamed for the WW1 too because our hero Gavrilo Princip assassinated the Austrian archduke but he did it because Austria wanted to annex Serbian Bosnia and they also butchered our people like slaves there. In both world wars we were with the allies and that is why Germans hated us so much, plus because we are Orthodox. Nazis generally hated all Slavs, which is why they killed so many Serbs, Russians and Poles, they hated us because we carry love towards peace in our heritage and genes and would always stand against them. They wanted us, Jews and Gypsies of the planet which is why they killed half of all of us in both wars, I call it an extermination not war as no other nation lost so many people. And they are also all connected with Vatican which hates us for not accepting Catholicism and staying Orthodox.
DeleteSadly, I agree. This sounds like a genocide, not just an act of war. What is the modern relationship b/w Serbia and Germany like?
DeleteWe're generally OK, but there is no love between nations just political interests. Our dictator for example came to power thanks to German prime minister Angela Merkel who refused to give us a green light to start the process of joining the EU a day before the elections so our democrat president lost them to this dictator, if she gave us the green light the democrats would've won again and we would be a peaceful and prosperous country now. So, every now and then Germans like to fuck us up still :)
DeleteJust like many of the history books here in the US try to wipe out the ugliness of our crimes, Nazis want to deny the Holocaust ever existed. Evil is evil, but thankfully there's enough truth tellers out there to help set the record straight by bringing these stories to light.
ReplyDeleteOur Nazis from Croatia and Bosnia did not just deny their crimes they made it their business to turn us, their biggest victims, into genocidal monsters and they succeeded in it thanks to Western media. It is the same with rusophobia in some Northern European countries where they try to equalize Russians with Nazis, while they themselves were Nazi collaborators in all wars.
