1950'S MALLORCA SET THE FINAL PROBLEM

Netflix has unveiled their Spanish originals slate for this year and among it are two period set series including THE FINAL PROBLEM (El problema final) which, as you remember, I announced last year. Set in 1959 it sees Jose Coronado portray a retired actor famous for playing Sherlock Holmes who finds himself investigating a real crime when a guest is found dead at a hotel on a small islet near Mallorca. The cast also features Maribel Verdú and Martiño Rivas and Jose Condessa.

 

19TH CENTURY SET LOBO SERIES

If you are in the mood for something darker, there is a historical crime series LOBO which brings us  the dark legend of Manuel Blanco Romasanta, a traveling tailor in 19th century rural Galicia who became Spain’s first documented serial killer. During his trial, he famously claimed to be a werewolf, sparking a legend that persists to this day. Luis Tosar and Tristán Ulloa lead the cast. Together with your trusted spy today you can continue our series of spotlights on the upcoming international period set series and films which we can expect on the small screens this year, and after England, France, Italy and Poland, this Sunday we are visiting Spain where their eight episode costume drama THE MAID'S DAUGHTERS (Las hijas de la criada) already streamed on Atresplayer earlier this winter and will air also on their Antena 3 network based on Sonsoles Onega's popular and award winning novel. The series was also offered to the international buyers earlier this week at Content Americas event which unveils Spain's premium TV offer each year. Verónica Sánchez, Carlota Baró, Alex Villazan, Roque Ruiz, Alejandro Vergara and Alain Hernández lead the cast in this period set mini TV series.

 THE MAID'S DAUGHTERS 

 follows two girls born at a Galician manor who swap destinies as revenge and battles for inheritance reshape a family empire. THE MAID'S DAUGHTERS is a drama set between Galicia and Cuba in the early 20th century, which offers a portrait of the time; a story full of intrigues, forbidden loves, class struggle, betrayals and envy. Family secrets emerge when twin girls are born in 1900 at Spirit Saint manor. An unexpected revenge disrupts the Valdés family, while matriarch Doña Inés fights to make her true daughter heir to an empire. 

In the peace of the Holy Spirit two girls, Clara and Catalina, come into the world. The first belongs to the maid, Renata, while the second is the daughter of the Valdés, Don Gustavo and Doña Inés. An unexpected revenge will shake the lives of those girls and all of them, and will make Doña Ines have to survive the heartbreak and pain of abandonment. And also the power struggles to turn their true daughter into the heir of an empire, in a time when women were not allowed to be owners of their lives.

 

ENA: QUEEN VICTORIA EUGENIA, A HEARTBREAKING HISTORICAL SERIES ON A SPANISH QUEEN THAT NO ONE LOVED AT COURT

We continue our international weekend moving from Russia today over to Spain, but don't worry we will go back tomorrow again. ENA: QUEEN VICTORIA EUGENIA is a new six part historical series from Spain's national broadcaster RTVE that has been presented at this year's MipCom. It is a heartbreaking story of Victoria Eugenia, granddaughter of Queen Victoria, despised by her husband, annulled by her mother-in-law, ridiculed by the court, ignored by her subjects, and punished by her children - a woman no one loved. The series is currently airing in Spain on Monday evenings.

 

ENA IS THE STORY

of a queen and also of a woman. Of a young Englishwoman who had never dreamed of being what she was: queen of Spain. On the journey, Victoria Eugenia (Kimberley Tell) leaves behind her family, her customs, her culture and has to renounce her religion to live in a strange land, where the first thing she suffers is an attack on her wedding day. She never felt accepted or loved, but she never gave up and always fought to achieve both. Modern in a traditional environment, she was an icon of fashion and of the liberation of feminine customs: she smoked, wore pants... When she discovered the continuous infidelities of King Alfonso XIII (Joan Amargos), she did not give up her role as queen. And she did so with discretion and, above all, resilience. She suffered the curse of transmitting hemophilia, to her husband's sorrow in view of the difficult dynastic succession that this entailed. In exchange, she improved the health of many Spaniards with a work which has gone down in history: the reconstruction of the Red Cross. Ena was a woman who fought to be happy with all her strength in a bitter period, in which she witnessed two world wars, a civil war and the deadly Spanish flu. For all these reasons, Ena, as a series, not only tells the story of Victoria Eugenia's life, it is also a portrait of an era that changed the world. Check out the short video below:

Española. They are also planning a period set telenovela MANUELA a historical drama about Manuela Sáenz, a woman who defied conventions in the 19th century. She was an Ecuadorian revolutionary heroine of South America who supported the revolutionary cause by gathering information, distributing leaflets and protesting for women's rights. She also had an intimate relationship with Simon Bolivar, Venezuelan military leader. Through that relationship, she was the first lady of Colombia, Venezuela and also of Peru during the 1820s. She is recognized as a feminist symbol of the 19th century wars of independence. It will be a co-production with Columbia.

He will both direct and showrun VILLA PAZ a true story which follows a team of idealistic medics who convert a royal palace into a field hospital. Set in Spain in 1937, an international team of volunteers toil tirelessly at the hospital, as rivalries and relationships imperil their battle to save lives. Max Benitz is penning the scripts.

When I first announced this series a few years ago I told you it would consist of ten episodes, but when the first season of Amazon Prime's EL CID historical series started last December it had just five of them. It was because they have actually split them into two five episode seasons and this is why the second one is ready to launch next week, July 15th, just half a year after the end of the first one. I cannot say I was overly impressed with the opening chapter last winter, it was rather bland, lacking in glamour, originality, thrills,
