THE STORY
is set in England, 1954. On a train to London, a man going by
the name of Luke Fitzwilliam meets Miss Pinkerton, who tells him that a
killer is on the loose in the sleepy English village of Wychwood under
Ashe.
The villagers believe the deaths are mere accidents, but Miss Pinkerton
knows otherwise - and when she's later found dead on her way to Scotland
Yard, Luke feels he must find the killer before they can strike again.
Because for a certain kind of person, murder is easy. Previous BBC
adaptations And Then

Not fan of Agatha Christie...the cover is interesting though.
ReplyDeleteIt is an American cover, interesting that they've slightly changed the title of book for USA so it is Easy to Kill instead Murder is Easy. Americans sure do like their killing obviously.

DeleteI like Agatha Christie's mysteries but they have been dramatised several times and familiarity may have bred contempt. Wikimisleadia says Murder is Easy was adapted for TV in 1982, again in 2009 (though the showrunners changed it and featured Miss Marple in the story) and on the radio about 10 years ago. Some of my friends and acquaintances are saying they are suffering withdrawal symptoms since the most recent series which features an adaptation of the Happy Valley thriller stories. Murder is Easy came out in 1939 - I've nothing against an adaptation of a classic murder mystery but if the Beeb (or other broadcasters) want to adapt a thriller from "back in the day" there are other writers besides AC - John Creasey wrote LOADS of books. Some of them were dramatised back in the 1960s but that's long enough ago now for fresh adaptations to be unfamiliar to the younger generation at least. There are other vintage thriller writers besides J Creasey of course; I'm just mentioning him as an example.
ReplyDeletePrevious adaptations at BBC were terrible, especially Malkovich as Poirot, a pure travesty. And Then There Were None was the only one decent.
DeleteThe 2009 adaptation of Murder Is Easy was on ITV not BBC. I usually liked the late Geraldine McEwan as an actress but I didn't warm to her as Miss Marple. I liked Margaret Rutherford (really going back) and Joan Hickson (back in the 1980s) in the role. There have been some radio adaptations of Miss Marple stories (on one of the BBC digital channels if memory serves me correctly) with June Whitfield playing the titular character. I have enjoyed those. I'm sure you're aware but just to be certain June Whitfield played the grandmother in Absolutely Fabulous.
ReplyDeleteI haven't heard of her before, actually, she is not an internally known name, but I did love AbFab. My fave Poirot is still Peter Ustinov, who is also one of my absolutely favourite actors of all times.
