TOBEY MAGUIRE GOES SF IN "THE 5TH WAVE"! DISNEY'S SF EPIC "PALADIN"! CHARMING TRAILER FOR DIANE KEATON'S & KEVIN KLINE'S "DARLING COMPANION"! "JOHN CARTER" EARNS $100 MILLION WORLDWIDE 1ST WEEKEND

He hasn't been present much lately as an actor, and they've even stolen the SPIDER-MAN gig from him and made an extremely horrible choice by giving it to unnoticeable
Andrew Garfield, but Tobey Maguire still has his producing job in Hollywood. According to "Variety" he has just bought film rights on THE 5TH WAVE, a yet to be published sf novel by Rick Yancey, in which the story centres on a young girl who is one of the few to survive a massive alien invasion, as she goes out to find her missing brother. The aliens can disguise themselves as humans, and the boy who helps her on the quest may or may not be one of these extraterrestrials in disguise. It's interesting that Rick Yencey hasn't even written the novel saga yet, and the deal is based only on his book proposal pre-emptively sold to Putnam Books.

HOLLYWOOD SPY HEADLINES
According to "The Hollywood Reporter" Neil LaBute will direct SOME GIRLS with quite a nice star studded cast including Emily Watson, Adam Brody, Jennifer Morrison (who is quite popular these days thanks to the lead role in planetary popular ONCE UPON A TIME show), Kristen Bell and Mia Maestro. The story of the film revolves around super charming Adam Brody who plays a man who attempts to make amends with several ex-girlfriends on the eve of his wedding. All of the actresses mentioned above will play his exes.
Disney is planning a new huge sf adventure after JOHN CARTER epic (which has just been released and although it earned just $30 million in USA in the first weekend, it has had huge success around the world breaking, for example, records in Russia as the biggest opening day in Russian cinema history. The film has earned $100 million worldwide in the opening weekend beating the negativity with which the film was bombarded by from evil fanboys who prayed for film to become a flop
without even seeing it. The audience has actually received the film with warmth and positivity and the film might score even better in the 2nd week). It will be titled PALADIN, and although the story is kept under wraps, it is known that it will be a big space epic and that it will be written by young Max Borenstein who is currently penning THE SEVENTH SON, the film adaptation of THE SPOOK'S APPRENTICE fantasy book by Joseph Delaney with Kit Harrington and Julianne Moore in the cast.

It's been a very slow month so far in the trailer business, people, so the only clip I have for you today is for a charming comedy drama titled DARLING COMPANION which premiers April 20th with quite a
stellar cast. It followsBeth (Diane Keaton) who saves a bedraggled lost dog from the side of the freeway on a wintry day in Denver. Struggling with her distracted, self-involved husband Joseph (Kevin Kline) and an empty nest at home, Beth forms a special bond with the rescued animal. When Joseph loses the dog after a wedding at their vacation home in the Rockies, the distraught Beth enlists the help of the few remaining guests and a mysterious young woman in a frantic search. Each member of the search party is affected by the adventure, which takes them in unexpected directions – comic, harrowing, and sometimes deeply emotional. The cast also includes Dianne Wiest, Elisabeth Moss, Sam Shepard, Richard Jenkins... Lawrence Casdan directs.

  3. John Carter didn't do so great over the weekend, but everyone I know who saw it seemed to really like it. It might grow by word of mouth and do better next week.

Aww, for the dog story. That's a great cast in that one.

    1. it did great around the world and international market has become much more important lately. Yep, everybody gives high scores to the film and it is interesting that most of the audience was older than 30 years, those who do not trust bad movie sites and their bad marketing

  6. I've seen a lot about John Carter today. I'm curious enough to try to go see it now. But, I'm definitely going to The Hunger Games. :)

    1. Go and see it :)
When it comes to HUNGER GAMES I'd never watch it myself, since I positively despise irresponsible films and books which show teens and kids as assassins and killers and put them in violent situations. HOLLYWOOD SPY will always strongly fight against that.

    2. thanks, Anne, somebody needs to fight for what is right, some people are taking such things too lightly, but when you actually feel the violence of a numb nation on your own skin, you develop different opinions when it comes to aggressive books and programmes both for adults and kids.

  7. Nice trailer....looks good considering the lead stars.

That is a gamble for Tobey but he might be into something. and yeah, Lorax ruled the BO for the second week. Thanks for all the updates ~

    1. oh, G, then you must live on Mars :) I haven't seen a single review which wasn't highly positive, Everybody loves the film, except, off course, those who hated the film even before they saw it, the ones who directed the negative campaign ever since the first news of the film being made were published two years ago. All the thrustworthy reviews offer high praise for the film. You can see comments of the people who adored the film bellow you as well.

  9. Looks like a nice little film, darling companion, as the cat and Pat like animals of course, even if it is a mutt..haha

Great that they are bringing more sci-fi films out and yeah Maguire hasn't done much of anything lately and agreed, that new spiderman guy is crap.

    1. LOL it would've been better if the darling companion was a feline one, yes? :)

    2. Yes a feline would have been better, but then they don't hit the mark and can't bark for the cats won't be controlled, so the mutt it is.

    3. and plus cats have dignity and would demand a bigger payment and a wardrobe of their own :)

  12. John Carter was epic and gorgeous and one of my favorite movies of the year. I want to see it again and again. :) Haters, Schmaters...

I'm hoping this movie Tobey acquired will work out. We need more movies centered on girls having adventures and saving the world.

Darling COmpanion looks wonderful and charming. I adore Kevin Kline.

    1. yes, Melsy, everybody says JOHN CARTER was amazing and beautiful and we need to spread the word about it, because somebody needs to fight for what is good, we can't let evil fanboys ruin great films just because they are angry with their own lives and are not getting any :)

  13. I do want to see John Carter, but getting out to the cinema right now is impossible for me. I may have to wait for the DVD. Darling Companion does look good. Keaton and Kline are great comedic actors and of course there's a dog in it. I just hope they don't kill the dog off. I can't bear that. I wouldn't see Marley and Me because it would make me too sad.

I wept as if I heard that we shall never see Chris Evan's abs and pecs :) when I watched the end of MARLEY AND ME... I shed rivers of tears... I swear I did... I didn't cry that much ever since BABE and BAMBI.

Also, I don't mind listening to people's problems. I actually like helping them. Except when the person starts making up fake stories to get attention, that is when I draw the line.

    1. but,Damien, when the are making up fake stories, you as a psychologist should listen to them and try to find out the reason why they have the need to get attention in that way and then try to help them... take it from an older colleague :)

Keaton and Kline are great comedic actors and the trailer for Darling Companion looks good. I just hope the dog doesn't die in the end like in Marley and Me.

  20. I watched an interview from last week with Willem Dafoe, who voices one of the aliens in JOHN CARTER. He was kind of a dick. Still want to see the movie.

Also, Adam Brody looks like he'd be a douche in real life.

also- the puppy one looks cute, but DANGITALL if i'm going to watch a puppy movie i want LOTS of cute puppy shots, and it seems like this puppy will be missing for most of the film. still-funny and heartwarming looking though!

    1. the statistics actually states that 90% of the audience were adults over the age of 30 :) It's too complex for kids and teens who only expect to see killings and action. I think you can take Samwise, but go with him off course to explain him the details that need to be explained, he will probably enjoy the visual splendour, and little boys need such epics to develop their imagination and have something glorious to remember when they grow up :)

  28. Garfield is a horrible choice? And he has no charisma? Have you seen any of his movies other than Social Network? Now, I liked Tobey as Peter Parker, but I think Garfield will do perfectly fine with it too. He's a good actor and he has plenty to bring to the table. All of the clips I've seen show he apparently does pretty well with the role and even shows charisma on his part. Not to mean his passion for the role will only make it better.

The Tobey movie sounds interesting. Could be a nice approach to the alien invasion genre. Just gotta wonder, will it go the route of I AM LEGEND? Or more dramatic and visceral like THE ROAD?

I'm surprised John Carter has done so well. I really did expect it to be something of a vapid CGI-fest. However, while I have seen a few bad reviews, the general consensus seems to be good. It didn't open as well as I'm sure Disney would've hoped here in the US, but it does seem the international crowd ate it up. I do suspect that it could do well this week due to the good word of mouth, but we'll have to wait and see. We got 21 Jump Street opening up and that's been getting a lot of good reviews. Then, the highly anticipated Hunger Games comes out next week. So those two could prevent John Carter from capitalizing on any long-term benefits of the word of mouth praise.

    2. @Josh
can't say I agree, Josh :) I've seen him in two films, and he was unnoticeable and unworthy of the attention he gets. Kinda like those Chastain, Mulligan and Wasikowska girls. He has zero charisma for me, but I know there are a few people who seem to like him. I myself prefer deep talent, radiant appearance and refined acting skills. The trailer for new SPIDERMAN looked like TWILIGHT to me :)

I'm also afraid that HUNGER GAMES could ruin the further success of JOHN CARTER, since people prefer immoral, dark and evil things to the good, inspiring and positive ones ;(
