'PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE'

We finish our international weekend today, after our trips to Germany on Friday and Denmark on Saturday, with a visit to France where two new
period set movies await us! PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE will be out this September in French cinemas after competing at Cannes. The movie will hit Hulu after Autumn release in USA cinemas.

In 18th century France a young painter, Marianne, is commissioned to
do the wedding portrait of Héloïse without her knowing. Therefore,
Marianne must observe her model by day to paint her portrait at night.
Day by day, the two women become closer as they share Héloïse's last
moments of freedom before the impending wedding.
'CASANOVA, LAST LOVE'

Set in the very same century is another costume drama CASANOVA, LAST LOVE which is currently playing around Europe and it also stars Valeria
Golino (who stars in the above one too), beside Vincent Lindon in the lead role.

In the eighteenth century, Casanova, known for his taste for fun and
play, arrived in London after having to go into exile. In this city of
which he knows nothing, he meets several times a young courtesan, the
Charpillon, which attracts him to the point of forgetting the other
women. Casanova is ready to do anything to achieve her ends, but La
Charpillon always escapes under the most diverse pretexts. She
challenges him, she wants him to love her as much as he wants.
I hope those two young women manage to run off with each other in "Portrait of a Lady on Fire."

ReplyDeleteThe title Portrait of a Lady brings to mind two famous novels Portrait of an Artist (as a young man) by James Joyce, and Portrait of an Artist (as an old man) by Joseph Heller. Both estethique and...boring.
The same applies to the above movie : estethique and...boring.
The Casanova movie sounds surprising . The big seducer brought to despair by a woman! Hahaha.
There was also A Portrait of a Lady by Henry James, an equally deadly boring writer if there ever was one :) I generally find artsy French dramas boring, they often seem to exist just for themselves not for the audience.
