Their influence reaches across Europe; they are the confidantes and
bankers of governments and emperors. Little happens without their say-so
and even less without their knowledge. But Greta Goldbaum has no say at
all in who she’ll marry. Greta’s union with cousin Albert will
strengthen the bond between the Austrian and the English branches of the
dynasty. It is sensible and strategic, however, Greta is neither. But
just as she begins to taste an unexpected happiness, war is looming and
even the Goldbaums can’t alter its course. For the first time in two
hundred years, the family will find themselves on opposing sides.
'Goldbaum' sounds jewish. I have no knowledge of jewish banking during WW1 period. I can only tell you this: as a jew myself, I don't like the jews who worked or are working for the Federal Reserve: Greenspan, Bernanke, Yellen, Fischer and others.
ReplyDeleteThese economists help (by printing money and financial manipulations)the american presidents make the nation believe everything is under control, when actually nothing is under control(and I don't mean only the huge deficit). This situation brings about anti-semitism, and puts the masses of jews in great danger.
yes, I hear the book tells about Jewish people coping with WW1 too.

ReplyDeletecope - as in deal, trying to live through, survive.... As far as I've got it WW1 saw the fall of many Jewish businesses as with the Goldbaums.
DeleteI can’t imagine not being able to marry for love, but for financial gain. Throw in a world war on top of it, must make one feel so helpless.
ReplyDeletethat is how the things go, I guess, in extremely rich families, you need to strengthen business ties through marriage in order for family to stay powerful and strong.
DeleteI have much respect for the Japanese princess who threw it all away and married for love. Sometimes you have to say to hell with family ties and money and live your own life.
Deleteyes, but for sacrificing a small part of their lives they do get everything us mere peasants :) can only dream of. Just imagine never, literally never ever, having to think of bills, cooking, cleaning, roof over your head, even clothes and pension. They get all that for free and they also enjoy the whole life given on a golden plate and also the privilege of serving your country by helping the poor and unprotected which not all of us are in the position to do as they are. And yet you still get ungrateful sods like Harry who behave like brats and marry the first vixen who wants to use them for their own gain.
DeleteI'd actually prefer to live in the real world. Most of those "ungrateful sods" like Harry, I don't believe they know how well they have it. I think us mere peasants have a better sense of empathy, gratitude, and appreciation for the struggles we've been through. Those royals can piss off with their sense of entitlement simply because they hit the birth lottery.
