COBIE SMULDERS WILL BULLY SUPERHEROES IN "THE AVENGERS". SYFY MAKING "TREASURE ISLAND" WITH RUPERT PENRY JONES, ELIJAH WOOD & DONALD SUTHERLAND. FREIDA PINTO & RIZ AHMED IN "TRISHNA"

Ah, so here's the new twist in the AVENGERS soap opera: the female role I've mentioned yesterday probably won't be Wasp, but agent Maria Hill who will just be a sidekick to Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury, someone who has been known to blackmail and bully superheroes
to get her way. And according to last rumors Morena Baccarin won't get it as we would all like, but Cobie Smulders, from HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, who was apparently the best at the screen testings which were held last week. According to "Playlist" she was also a candidate for Joss Whedon's WONDER WOMAN.

If you miss some pirates on TV, Syfy is preparing their two-part film adaptation of the famous TREASURE ISLAND which follows young Jim who is unexpectedly drawn into the world of piracy when he discovers a treasure map and finds himself battling with Silver for the treasure and his life. Quite an interesting cast includes: Eddie Izzard as Long John Silver, Elijah Wood as Ben Gunn, Donald Sutherland as Flint, our dear Rupert Penry-Jones as Squire Trelawney... The film should premiere in 2012.
Since there haven't been many Indian films after SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, you might like the new project from famous filmmaker Michael Winterbottom who is preparing TRISHNA, a modern-day retelling of famous novel "Tess of the d’Urbervilles". According to "Playlist" he already has two extremely gorgeous young actors: Riz Ahmed (FOUR LIONS) and Freida Pinto (SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, IMMORTALS). The film will follow the tragic relationship between Jay, the son of a property developer, and Trishna, the daughter of an auto rickshaw owner.

  6. I think Cobbie will be great in The Avengers, I do like her on HIMYM she has that certain attitude.

  7. Though I am a Morena fan, I do love Cobie. She does have that bitch slap attitude. No doubt she would bring it. She'll be awesome with Sam L.

What a cast for Treasure Island. I adore Eddie Izzard and most especially Rupert.

nya, she won't be a Wonder Woman, that was the plan before when Whedon was on that project but he isn't anymore. I'm coming right over :)

    @Vics
glad you like all the news, dahling, and yes, Dev Patel was much much better than her in SLUMDOG.

  11. I'll second Avalon's comment. Treasure Island does fit the profile of an entertaining film. I always loved that concept.

  25. Maria Hill is such a boring character, especially if she appears as a second string to Nick Fury in this film. And she most certainly will. The cast is already too big for average viewer. I'll give her two minutes screen time.

I watched at least 6-7 versions of Treasure Island. I'm not ready for another one, not if it is done in "classic" setting. Wouldn't be interested even if it were a $200 million production.
One adventure film I would have to pass in advance. :(

  26. Cobie has just signed on for nine films, which means they plan to use her character in all possible AVENGER spin-offs. Chris Evans said that he will play Cap America till he's 40 since he's also signed on for 9 films :))

By the way, Bels, I'm currently translating STARSHIP TROOPERS for Serbian readers, wonder what you think off that one? :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. I won't mind seeing Cobie or Chris in those roles in so many movies, provided those movies are at least decent. I'm more of a TV series man, than a single film lover. So no problem with quantity for me.

Starship Troopers by Robert A. Heinlein?
I would guess those are the only starship troopers worth translating. :)
I haven't read that one, but I've heard it's a classic. I myself would be honored to translate such a piece. :) Was it translated before for Serbia or former Yugoslavia? I can't remember.

I've seen the movie (all three, in fact). I really liked the first one, directed by Paul Verhoeven. It had flaws, of course. Oversimplified story (as stated by those who read the book), and some strange casting choices. But I liked Verhoven's uncompromising style (as always), and use of so many monster-special-effects in broad daylight, not in dark where you can cover up all your little shortcomings.

It's great to hear you're translating Starship Troopers. :) Hopefully some of the younger readers in Serbia (and older, why not?) will have a new (first-time?) chance to read such an important work of science fiction.

  28. I'm not sure, but I think it wasn't translated before. It's not easy at all since it's full with complex military terms and fictional sf words :) At some points I'm not even sure that Heinlein knew what he wanted to say :)
I wouldn't agree with people who say the film simplified the story from the book, since the book also has an extremely simple (sometimes even superficial) plot. And you know that it is a controversial book, since it can be seen as fascistic :( I liked the film because I took it as a very strong satire against US militarism and colonial intentions. But I don't see that in the book so far (I will finish it in just three weeks since I have a very strict deadline).

    ReplyDelete
  29. It's probably because Heinlein is not "writer" writer. Most of old-school American science fiction writers were not know for their rich literary style, or their "way with words". :)
But I like most of them anyway. :)
Idea's are sometimes more important than forms, or execution.

Anyhow, you can't go wrong with translation if things are as you say they are. You can't go wrong if the original is flawed itself. Especially since there was no prior translation. :)
