Today, his fashion house is a symbol of absolute trash and absurd fashion garbage and he is most probably turning in his grave, sadly, but there were days when CRISTOBAL BALENCIAGA and his name were a symbol of innovative high style and elegance. January 19th is bringing us Spanish six episode mini TV series which will give us a chronicle of the rise of designer Cristóbal Balenciaga from humble origins to fashion icon. Alberto

in 1937, behind him is a successful career in his workshops in Madrid

He was the Master. Mm by the time he took on Paris during the Spanish Civil War, there were no Givenchy nor Dior. He had a bit of rivalry with Dior in the late 40s, but by the time Givenchy came out, Balenciaga was a legend.
ReplyDeleteFunny how all of them worked with Audrey Hepburn who launched Givenchy into the stratosphere by wearing his gowns in all of her films. He never paid her, though, until her husband Mel Ferer got angry and told him he can no longer use his wife in his perfume ads for free. She was even buying the perfume herself even though it was invented for her originally.
DeleteYes, Balenciaga had it worse than Givenchy, three generation of Franco women turned him into a sort of royalty designer in Spain. But none of them paid him! And he couldn't charge them of course. On the other hand he did bargained with his muse, Sonsoles, Marchionness of Llanzol

DeleteMen are generally better in arts, no female writer nor painter can level up to male ones. Even among the cooks the best ones are usually men. I think it is generally because men are more open to taking risks and being creative. On the other hand women are better in nurturing professions because they are more caring then men.
You are both right to a point. The first couturier know name in history was Rose Bertine who made robes for Marie Antionette. When fashion became an industry and a business in the XIX century, men took over with Paris at the center of dressmaking. Women who could afford their prices would go to Paris to buy from Worth or Poiret. Around the turn of the century, Jeanne Pacquin was the first woman who entered the new industry and prospered. She even trained another well-known designer called Madeleine Vionnet.
DeleteBy the time Balenciaga arrived in Paris there were a lot of female designers. Chanel was, of course the queen, but there was Madame Gres, Jeanne Lanvin ad Vionnet. Most of them made perfume as well. They also had foreign women coming to learn the trade like Belgian Maggy Rouff ad Italian Nina Ricci.
Outside of France there were women leaving their mark in the business. Lady Duff-Gordon survived the Titanic and opened a fashion house in London under the name of Madame Lucille. In Italy ruled Ela Schiaparelli, the Dali of the Haute Couture.
It was after the war when no new female names appeared in the fashion industry. Only in the 70s they started to pop up again and most of them, great as their designs were/are, had their careers fostered by their last name (Diane von Furstenberg, Paloma Picasso, Stella McCartney). I don’t know why there are no more women designers. It took years for Vera Wang to build up her confidence and start to design wedding gowns. Only Carolina Herrera is up there with big men designers
Probably the question of creativity, men usually have it more. On the other hand no male designer would succeed without an army of women who sew and tailor his gowns. Plus with their caring nature, those women around them usually created a safe atmosphere for the designers to work, just remember Dior's and Saint Laurent's assistants who often had a task of making their bosses happy in private life too. I'd be the king of the world if I had an army of serfs to take care of me LOL
DeleteModern Balenciaga is trash. I wouldn’t even buy that shit in a second hand thrift shop. I will watch this though. I’m sure the fashions at least will be something to admire over today’s offerings.

DeleteAnd that's why you have more integrity than the celebs who do take money to endorse that garbage. I've seen druggy street bums wearing better looking clothes than the junk they try to pass off as high end fashion.
DeleteIt seems wearing garbage and looking like trashy freaks is the trend now, just look at that moronic Emma Corrin or Florence Poo, both look like blooming idiots on the red carpets and they are not even talented.
