DeleteThis sounds exotic and interesting. I'm keeping track of every period piece in the making. There are so few.
ReplyDeleteYes, and so many have been announced and then went quiet so it is very difficult to keep up with all of them. It is easier with shows than films. Out of all the period set ones in production we mostly get photos from that Napoleon pic with Joaquin Phoenix, but I don't do films which glorify that French Hitler, so I'm not covering it.
DeleteSo you are one fo those who equate The Little Corsican with Hitler. What's your beef with Napoleon? We had a whole list of new period pieces coming up this year and aside Becoming Elizabeth, all the others seem to be in hiatus.
DeleteWhat do you mean what is my beef with him? He left hundreds of thousands of poor people dead in his wake invading half of Europe and he certainly did not do it for defensive reasons but pure vile greed and tyranny.
DeleteFor starters. I’m not a Napoleon fan. To me he is someone from the ancient past that should be judged within his historical context, but I find it misguided and dangerous to compare him to Hitler. Revisionist historians blame him for atrocities such as tossing prisoners to the sharks during the Egyptian Campaign. Because it happened during his watch, he is blamed for the brutal repression of the Caribbean French colonies, and Catholic historians still blame him for arresting the Pope.
DeleteSo, everybody has their beef with the little Corsican. You blame him for invasion and war. What made him different from other rulers before him since Alexander the Great to Attila the Hum? He was not very different from the Ottoman Sultans or Charles the V. But what would made him similar to Hitler? Did Bonaparte impose an ideology? Was he into ethnic cleansing? He was just the last of an extensive list of conquerors. And if we want to play with figures. Six million dead in 17 years of war, seem less that fourteen million in six years of war, especially since the dead under Hitler were mostly civilians.
And yet, there was an ideology backing Napoleon. Despite the fact that he became an emperor, he was very much a product of the French Revolution. He brought to other countries both the violence and the ideas of freedom and equality of the Revolution. His invasion of European countries was a continuation of the defensive war that Revolutionary France had fought against reactionary monarchies.
Those that fought against Napoleon were representatives of the Anciene Regime: The Hapsburgs, the Romanoff, the Spanish Bourbons. Once, the Emperor was ousted, the Bourbons returned to the throne, in Spain, Portugal and France, erasing all the revolutionary achievements. Think that Napoleon instituted enlightened monarchies everywhere and attempted to restore Poland’s autonomy. Think that in every invaded/occupied country, freethinkers embraced him.
For the last two hundred years, Napoleon has been seen as a villain and a hero, but mostly as a heroic figure. Nineteenth century writers always display admiration for him, from Stendhal to Tolstoy. In fact, he was so admired, that less than forty years after his abdication, his nephew became Emperor of the French.
It’s not wrong to despise Napoleon, but it is wrong to compare him to Hitler.
That sounds like it might be interesting.

ReplyDeleteOne of the prettiest we've ever seen actually. And the cast is also easy on the eye. I finished Our House series about that women that comes home to see strangers moving into her house and Rupert Penry Jones had a lot of scenes wearing just his undies. A sight to see.
