Barbara Parker, a young woman from Blackpool, and her finding her comic voice in the world of the 1960s sitcom. It’s the height of the swinging 60s and Barbara Parker
has just been crowned Miss Blackpool – but there’s got to be more to
life than being a beauty queen in a seaside town, right? She wants to
be… someone.
The bright lights of London are calling, and our determined hero sets
off to find out who that someone is. The London she encounters is not as
quite as swinging as the one she’d read about and seen on TV. However,
after a series of setbacks Barbara finds herself in unfamiliar territory
– an audition for a TV comedy show. Barbara’s uncompromising northern

The new series will air sometime next year over at Sky

the X factor that the show has been missing. She gets
the part and becomes part of a ground breaking new sitcom which will
have an impact on British comedy for decades to come.

I enjoy British crime series, so MAGPIE MURDERS is on my list.

DeleteI pray Funny Girl will be better than Mrs Maisel that failed to show how hard it was for female comedians to break the glass ceiling in a masculine turf
ReplyDeleteBut at the same time I also expect her good looks made it easier for her in many other aspects of life. Women will often talk about how hard it is for them in some aspect of life, while also forgetting how easier it is for them in some others. I was myself refused a job a few times as a teacher for being a male because it is often a female job in some schools. So we all suffer, it is just that some talk about it, some don't.

ReplyDeleteI don't think anywhere is as glitzy as the media makes it appear. NY, LA, even Paris doesn't have that wow factor once your standing in the middle of it. I imagine being on a comedy series isn't as glamorous as the stars make it seem either.
Well, like my job of book translator which oh so many people imagine glamorous and cozy, while it is most often blood sweat and tears and many many many sacrifice.

DeleteI threw up a lot during this last saga. It is something I'd never read myself (filled with satanism, bad language, porn) and it was a massive challenge mentally and morally, there were scenes where I just had to get up from the desk and go take a walk and only then return and continue. These are battles that we lead with ourselves sometimes while translating something we'd never ever read privately. Sometimes you translate even something you hate from the bottom of your wretched suffering soul.
DeleteI'm sorry you had to put yourself through that. I like that I can just set a book aside if I hate it without consequence. You'd have to choose between translating trash or putting food on the table and that's a shitty decision to have to make.

DeleteAgatha Christie's book series and film series were very popular in 1985-90. Magpie Murders sound exciting!

DeleteThese both look good, although I'm leaning towards Magpie Murders. I know it's not the "light hearted" concept that I've been asking for, but it at least looks like it will make us think.
